  • Temporal and spatial fluctuations of surface water temperature in Yeosu Bay for the period from 2010 to 2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 32 stations in the south coast of Korea. Temperatures in the northern part of the bay are higher in summer and lower in winter than in the southern part of the bay. The lowest and highest temperature of the annual mean are found at the eastern coast of POSCO and at the west of Dae Island, respectively. Cold water masses appear at estuarine area when the discharge of Sumjin river is affluent. Amplitude of temperature fluctuation whose period is less than semi-diurnal is largest at Hadong coast and around Dae Island. Spectral analysis of surface water temperature shows a significant peak at a periodic fluctuation of 0.5 to 24 days and about 15-day period of predominant fluctuation is most frequent in Yeosu Bay. From the cross-correlation analysis of temperature fluctuations, Yeosu Bay can be classified into six areas; the south area affected by South Sea of Korea, the mixed area in the center of the bay, the estuarine area affected by river discharge at the north of the bay, the hot waste water area near Hadong coast, the area around Dae Island and the area near Noryang Channel affected by the water in Jinju Bay, respectively.

  • Based on the semiclassical theory of chaotic scattering, Tanner et al. [J. Phys. B 40, F157 (2007)] proposed the fluctuation in the partial photoionization cross section of helium below the double-ionization threshold would show the same characteristics as in the total cross section, predicting that the Fourier spectrum of the fluctuation reveals peaks at the classical actions of closed triple collision orbits and the amplitude of the fluctuation decreases algebraically as the energy approaches the double-ionization threshold. In that paper, however, the predictions were not clearly confirmed due to the lack of experimental data with sufficient accuracy. So instead, we calculate the partial photoionization cross sections of collinear eZe helium for the energy range from the single-ionization threshold $I_{20}$ to $I_{32}$ in order to numerically confirm the predictions. Analysis of the fluctuation in the partial cross section shows that the predictions are indeed valid. Our findings mean that the fluctuation in the partial photoionization cross section can be described by classical triple collision orbits in the semiclassical limit. Thus it explains in a natural way the mirroring and mimicking structures observed in cross section signals for different ionization channels.

  • In power quality monitoring, voltage fluctuation is one of the power quality problems, which cause light flickers. To determine the flicker severity, the flicker meter concept was developed in an IEC 61000-4-15 standard. Generally, voltage fluctuations are described as an amplitude modulation(AM). The flicker meter of IEC 61000-4-15 as an international standard for flicker measurement recommends square demodulation method to detect flicker signals from voltage fluctuation signals. This paper suggests a new effective method using filter bank to detect and estimate flicker signals, which do not need square demodulation. For the accurate detection of flicker signals, the filter bank is designed with a full consideration of the spectrum characteristics of voltage fluctuation signals described as AM. The frequency and magnitude of the detected flicker signals are estimated using recursive method. Computer simulations were performed on synthesized signals to prove validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the experimental study of drilling for duralumin A2024 with intermittently decelerated feed rate. It is achieved through a programmed periodic increase and decrease in the feed rate using a machining center. The following experimental result were performed with the objective of solving chip to disposal problems. In conventional drilling of aluminum, long continuous chips are produced that wind around the drill causing difficulties in eliminating chips from the cutting zone. In order to acquire the basic data necessary to regulate the chip profile, the relationship between cutting variables and chip shape was investigated. The following conclusions are established from the experimental results. At a suitable feed fluctuation ratio, intermittently decelerated feed drilling proved successful in breaking chips to appropriate lengths while maintaining stable cutting. Thus, it is an effective method for improving chip disposal. The amplitude of the dynamic component of cutting force in intermittent feed frilling is influenced by the feed fluctuation ratio.

  • It is important to know the mechanism of cell membrane fluctuation because it can be readout for the nanomechanical interaction between cytoskeleton and plasma membrane. Traditional techniques, however, have drawbacks such as probe contact with the cell surface, complicate analysis, and limit spatial and temporal resolution. In this study, we developed a new system for non-contact measurement of nano-scale localized-cell surface dynamics using modified-scanning ion-conductance microscopy. With 2 nm resolution, we determined that endothelial cells have local membrane fluctuations of ~20 nm, actin depolymerization causes increase in fluctuation amplitude, and ATP depletion abolishes all membrane fluctuations.

  • In this paper, a water tank experiment using Binary Frequency Shift Keying (BFSK) method for text transmission performance by water surface fluctuation is conducted. Water surface fluctuation and delay spread which affect the channel coherence bandwidth is a limiting factor in underwater acoustic communication. The amplitude fluctuation and delay spread the smooth surface and fluctuation surface, were identified. The effective delay spread of both cases are 5ms, 4ms corresponding to the coherence bandwidth of 200Hz, 250Hz, respectively. The bit error rate of BFSK modulated text transmission is about $10^{-4}$ in less than 200bps in smooth surface but less than 250bps in fluctuation surface. Therefore, this experiment shows that the water surface fluctuation is important factor determining the performance of the underwater acoustic transmission.

  • Phase resonance in Francis type hydraulic turbine is studied. The phase resonance is a phenomenon that the pressure fluctuation in the penstock of hydraulic turbine installation can become very large when the pressure waves from each guide vane caused by the interaction with the runner vane reach the penstock with the same phase. Experimental and numerical studies have been carried out using a centrifugal fan. In the present study, comparisons between the pump mode and the turbine mode operations are made. The experimental and numerical results show that the rotational direction of the rotor does not affect characteristics of the pressure fluctuation but the propagation direction of the rotorstator interaction mode plays an important role. Flow rate fluctuations through the stator are examined numerically. It has been found that the blade passing flow rate fluctuation component can be evaluated by the difference of the fluctuating pressure at the inlet and the outlet of the stator. The amplitude of the blade passage component of the pressure fluctuation is greater at the stator inlet than the one at the stator outlet. The rotor-stator interaction mode component is almost identical at the inlet and the outlet of the stator. It was demonstrated that the pressure fluctuation in the volute and connecting pipe normalized by the flow rate fluctuation becomes the same for pump and turbine mode operations, and depends on the rotational direction on the interaction mode.

  • A Numerical analysis of preventing pressure oscillation for the supersonic inlet of IRR at the boosting mode was conducted in this study. To reduce the fluctuation of pressure, the supersonic inlet was equipped with annular slit. By decreasing the entrained air mass, the amplitude of fluctuation and maximum pressure at the inlet were decreased while the frequency was increased. In case, the optimal trade-off value is obtained between frequency and amplitude, it is expected that the pressure oscillation declining method using the slit will be helpful in various boosting and transition mode problem for IRR.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of unsteady flow in a mixed flow pump guide vane under the small flow conditions, several indicator points in a mixed flow pump guide vane was set, the three-dimensional unsteady turbulence numerical value of the mixed flow pump which is in the whole flow field will be calculated by means of the large eddy simulation (LES), sub-grid scale model and sliding mesh technology. The experimental results suggest that the large eddy simulation can estimate the positive slope characteristic of head & capacity curve. And the calculation results show that the pressure fluctuation coefficients of the middle section in guide vane inlet will decrease firstly and then increase. In guide vane outlet, the pressure fluctuation coefficients of section will be approximately axially symmetrical distribution. The pressure fluctuation minimum of section in guide vane inlet is above the middle location of the guide vane suction surface, and the pressure fluctuation minimum of section in which located the middle and outlet of guide vane. When it is under the small flow operating condition, the eddy scale of guide vane is larger, and the pressure fluctuation of the channel in guide vane being cyclical fluctuations obviously which leads to the area of eddy expanding to the whole channel from the suction side. The middle of the guide vane suction surface of the minimum amplitude pressure fluctuation to which the vortex core of eddy scale whose direction of fluid's rotation is the same to impeller in the guide vane adhere.
