  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of vibration frequency and amplitude on scapular winging during the knee push-up plus exercise. METHODS: A total of 26 female subjects with scapular winging were evaluated while performing the knee push-up plus exercise with no vibration, low-frequency/low-amplitude (5 Hz/3 mm) vibration, low-frequency/high-amplitude (5 Hz/9 mm) vibration, high-frequency/low-amplitude (15 Hz/3 mm) vibration, and high-frequency/high-amplitude (15 Hz/9 mm) vibration. The surface EMG of the serratus anterior (SA) muscle was compared between the vibration frequency and amplitude. The EMG amplitude was normalized using the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). The statistical significance of the results was evaluated using one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: The SA muscle EMG values increased at low-frequency/low-amplitude vibration and at low-frequency/high-amplitude vibration compared to no vibration. Furthermore, the same values increased at high-frequency/low-amplitude vibration and high-frequency/high-amplitude vibration compared to no vibration. In general, a higher vibration frequency and amplitude was associated with higher EMG values of the SA muscle, with particularly greater increases observed during high-frequency/high-amplitude vibration. There was also a significant difference between each condition with a high-frequency/high-amplitude vibration (p<.05). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that there were remarkable clinical effect of the knee push-up plus exercise with vibration, which enhanced the SA muscle activation in persons with scapular winging. Furthermore, applying a higher vibration frequency and amplitude more effectively increased for increasing SA muscle activation.

  • In this study, the tracking of the temporal variation of the frequency and the amplitude in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise is considered using the Extended Kalman filter (EKF. The EKF has many applications and it has been applied to the problem of tracking the time-variable frequency. However the existing EKF frequency trackers could was driven in the small time-variable amplitude or required the additional amplitude tracker in the large time-variable amplitude. In this study, the EKF frequency-amplitude tracker, which could track both frequency and amplitude simultaneously from the measured signal in the relatively large time-variable amplitude environment, is proposed for improving the performance of the time-variable frequency tracking and its performance is verified by the simulation and the experimental work.

  • Fatigue failure of a grid structure using bolt-sphere joints is liable to occur in a high-strength bolt due to the alternating and reciprocal actions of a suspension crane. In this study, variable amplitude fatigue tests were carried out on 20 40 Cr steel alloy M30 high-strength bolts using an MTS fatigue testing machine, and four cyclic stress amplitude loading patterns, Low-High, High-Low, Low-High-Low, and High-Low-High, were tested. The scanning electron microscope images of bolt fatigue failure due to variable amplitude stress were obtained, and the fractographic analysis of fatigue fractures was performed to investigate the fatigue failure mechanisms. Based on the available data from the constant amplitude fatigue tests, the variable amplitude fatigue life of an M30 high-strength bolt in a bolt-sphere joint was estimated using both Miner's rule and the Corten-Dolan model. Since both cumulative damage models gave similar predictions, Miner's rule is suggested for estimating the variable-amplitude fatigue life of M30 high-strength bolts in a grid structure with bolt-sphere joints; the S-N fatigue curve of the M30 high-strength bolts under variable amplitude loading was derived using equivalent stress amplitude as a design parameter.

  • One of the drawbacks in an OFDM system is the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Among a number of techniques to reduce the high PAPR, simple amplitude predistortion (SAP), a form of active constellation extension, has been proposed to effectively achieve the desired PAPR. In this letter, a novel scheme, simple amplitude and phase predistortion (SAPP), is proposed. In SAP the carriers' amplitude is utilized to combat the peak signal. Each amplitude is amplified according to its degree of contribution as a metric. In addition to amplitude, SAPP also utilizes the phase. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme provides better PAPR reduction than SAP.

  • The signal processing algorithm for a PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) using amplitude modulation/demodulation is addressed in this paper. Dark currents and external noises such as daylight and fluorescent lights are eliminated by using amplitude modulation/demodulation and a low pass filter. The proposed amplitude modulation/demodulation method for a PSD sensor is compared with pulse amplitude modulation method. The proposed amplitude modulation is proved to be more accurate and robust than PAM method by analysis and experiments. Multiple measurements using one PSD sensor by amplitude modulation/demodulation is also addressed. The Power variation of light source is compensated by normalization process using a divider.

  • The EMG amplitude estimator, which has been investigated as an indicator of muscle force, is of high relevance not only in biomechanical studies but also more and more in clinical applications. This paper presents a new approach to estimate surface EMG amplitude by using the mean spike and mean turn amplitude(MSA and MTA) variables. Surface EMG signals, a total of 198 signals, were recorded from biceps brachii muscle over the range of 20-80%MVC isometric contraction and performance of the MSA and MTA variables applied to amplitude estimation of the EMG signals were investigated. To examine the performance, a SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) was computed from each amplitude estimate. The results of the study indicate that MSA and MTA amplitude estimations with first order whitening filter and 300[ms]-350[ms] moving average window length are optimal and show better performance(mean SNR improvement of 6%-15%) than the most frequently used variables(ARV and RMS).

  • Wind turbines produce aerodynamic noise which fluctuate periodically at a blade passing frequency. This sound characteristic is called amplitude modulation, or swishing sound. Several previous studies claimed that this amplitude modulation has a possibility to increase noise annoyance. Thus, this study performed a listening test to find the relationship between the amplitude modulation in wind turbine noise on noise annoyance. The stimuli for the listening test was recorded from a 1.5MW wind turbine in Jeju island. The result of the listening test shows that the amplitude modulation in wind turbine noise significantly increase noise annoyance. Moreover, this study analytically examined the effect of amplitude modulation on noise perception. The result indicates that amplitude modulated sound can be easily perceived even though the background noise level is higher than the sound level of the signal.

  • Objectives : N100 amplitude slope(the intensity dependence of the cortical auditory evoked potentials) is widely considered as an indirect indicator of central serotonergic neurotransmission. However, there are only a few studies about N100 amplitude slopes of major psychiatric disorders. In this study, we examined N100 amplitude slope differences among major depressive disorder(MDD), bipolar disorder(BD), schizophrenia (SCZ) and normal controls(NC). Methods : We measured the N100 amplitude slopes of 35 patients with MDD, 33 patients with BD, 27 patients with SCZ and 35 NC subjects. Amplitude differences from N1 to P2 at the five different sound intensities(55, 65, 75, 85 and 95dB) were examined at Cz electrode. The N100 amplitude slope was calculated as the linear regression of five N1/P2 peak-to-peak amplitudes across stimulus intensities. Results : BD patients showed significantly reduced N100 amplitude slope compared with NC(0.54${\pm}$0.70 vs. 0.96${\pm}$0.72, p=0.035). N100 amplitude slope of SCZ patients was significantly reduced compared with NC(0.50${\pm}$0.47 vs. 0.96${\pm}$0.72, p=0.027). N100 amplitude slope of BD patients was significantly lower than that of MDD patients(0.54${\pm}$0.70 vs. 0.94${\pm}$0.60, p=0.046). SCZ patients also showed significant reduction of N100 amplitude slope compared with MDD patients(0.50${\pm}$0.47 vs. 0.94${\pm}$0.60, p=0.036). There was no significant difference of N100 amplitude slope between MDD patients and NC(0.94${\pm}$0.60 vs. 0.96${\pm}$0.72, p=1.000). Conclusion : Interestingly, the N100 amplitude slopes of BD and SCZ were reduced compared to NC and MDD patients. Our results suggest the predictive use of N100 amplitude slope in making differential diagnoses of major psychiatric disorders. Clinical implications of N100 amplitude slope in major psychiatric disorders were discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a biorthogonal modulation employing a constant-amplitude transmission of multi-code signals by introducing a simple constant-amplitude coding scheme with redundant bits. The proposed constant-amplitude biorthogonal multi-code (CABM) modulation can provide high spectral efficiency compared with a conventional direct sequence/spread spectrum (DS/SS) modulation. Nevertheless the proposed CABM modulation can keep up a constant-amplitude signal. Additionally, we propose various types of demodulation structures for the CABM modulation. Simulation results show that bit error rate (BER) performance and hardware complexity of the proposed CABM modulation are highly improved in comparison with those of a constant-amplitude orthogonal multi-code (CAOM) modulation.

  • Amplitude anomalies or bright spots are often linked to hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs but can also be caused by tuning effect resulting from interference when two reflectors are close together. Tuning effect can be removed from amplitude maps before seismic amplitude and reservoir thickness data are converted into estimates of hydrocarbon accumulations. The most straightforward way of removing tuning effect or 'detuning' is by comparing the reservoir amplitude in seismic data with the response of wedge or thin-bed models and calibrating the reservoir amplitude using the tuning curves from the models. Volumetric estimation for amplitude plays must be based on detuned amplitude maps because hydrocarbon volumes can be significantly overestimated when conventional amplitude maps are used.
