  • The amount of precipitation during El Nino over Korea increases in Summer and Winter. However, it decreases in Fall, and exhibits not much change in Spring. Especially, the amount of precipitation during September of El Nino year is much less than that of the September of non-El Nino year. The amount of precipitation during El Nino year of October and November shows similar amount of precipitation during non-El Nino year of the same period. The reason for decreasing precipitation in September is related to the weakening of the 2nd rainy season during the development of El Nino over East Asia including Korea. Insufficiency of fall precipitation during El Nino year influences drought in Spring for next year.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the change of statistical characteristics of typhoons affecting the Korean Peninsula. For this purpose, we analyzed the occurrence frequency of typhoon for 50 years (1954-2003) and change of air temperature and sea surface temperature near the Korean Peninsula in the same period. We classified typhoon tracks affecting the Korean Peninsula, and analyzed their trends and the amount of damage by typhoon. While the annual occurrence frequency of typhoon in the western North Pacific gradually decreased, its frequency affecting the Korean Peninsula increased. In addition, the occurrence location migrated northward. This coincides with the increase in air temperature and sea surface temperature around the Korean Peninsula. Typhoon tracks affecting the Korean Peninsula were classified into 7 types. Among them, the occurrence frequency of type 6 and 7 has increased. Although the occurrence frequency is low in type 2, the amount of damage by typhoon and occurrence frequency are increasing recently.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between the classification ability quotient and cortisol-hormonal change of middle school students. Thirty-three students, second graders in middle school, performed the classification task that can be an indicator of students' classification ability. And then amount of the secreted hormone was analyzed during task performance. The study results were as follows: First, the classification methods of students mostly utilized visual, qualitative. Their classification patterns for each subject were static, partial, and non-comparative. Second, the amount of stress-hormone was secreted from students during the experiment decreased in overall after the free classification. It seemed that student-centered activity relieved stress. Third, the classification ability quotient turned out to be significantly correlated to the stress hormone, which means that there was a close relationship between classification ability and stress level. It was also considered that stress had a positive effect on the improvement of classification ability. This study provided physiologically more accurate information on the stress increased in the learning process than other conventional studies based on reports or interviews. Finally, researchers could recognize the effect of stress in the cognitive activity and the need to find an appropriate level of stress in learning processes.

  • Cloud amount calculation algorithm was developed using MTSAT-1R satellite data. The cloud amount is retrieved at 5 km ${\times}$ 5 km over the Korean Peninsula and adjacent sea area. The algorithm consists of three steps that are cloud detection, cloud type classification, and cloud amount calculation. At the first step, dynamic thresholds method was applied for detecting cloud pixels. For using objective thresholds in the algorithm, sensitivity test was performed for TBB and Albedo variation with temporal and spatial change. Detected cloud cover was classified into 3 cloud types (low-level cloud, cirrus or uncertain cloud, and cumulonimbus type high-level cloud) in second step. Finally, cloud amount was calculated by the integration method of the steradian angle of each cloud pixel over $3^{\circ}$ elevation. Calculated cloud amount was compared with measured cloud amount with eye at surface observatory for the validation. Bias, RMSE, and correlation coefficient were 0.4, 1.8, and 0.8, respectively. Validation results indicated that calculated cloud amount was a little higher than measured cloud amount but correlation was considerably high. Since calculated cloud amount has 5km ${\times}$ 5km resolution over Korean Peninsula and adjacent sea area, the satellite-driven cloud amount could show the possibility which overcomes the temporal and spatial limitation of measured cloud amount with eye at surface observatory.

  • This study focuses on fabricating silver flake powder by a mechanical milling process and investigating the formation of flake-shaped particles during milling. The silver flake powder is fabricated by varying the mechanical milling parameters such as the amount of powder, ball size, impeller rotation speed, and milling time of the attrition ballmill. The particle size of the silver flake powder decreases with increasing amount of powder; however, it increases with increasing impeller rotation speed. The change in the particle size of the silver flake powder is analyzed based on elastic collision between the balls, taking energy loss of the balls due to the powder into consideration. The change in the particle size of the silver flake powder with mechanical milling parameters is consistent with the change in the diameter of the elastic deformation contact area of the ball, due to the collision between the balls, with milling parameters. The flake-shaped silver particles are formed at the elastic deformation contact area of the ball due to the collision.

  • Breast cancer surgery result in changes in clothing style due to changes in the size of the breast as well as body shape. This study provides basic data as a fashion therapy to improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients who have to change clothing habits after surgery. The regression results found that the most important factor are pain and the amount of breast loss for clothes style changes after breast cancer surgery. Breast cancer patients suffer pain relative to the proximity to the date of surgery and regardless of the breast cancer resection range. However, the changes in clothes style relates to the amount of pain and breast reduction range. The t-test results on the change of the clothing styles for before and after breast cancer surgery showed that women significantly prefer comfortable clothes with sleeves and consider a closure style on clothes to put on and take off instead of clothes that are tight-fitting, have thin fabric or deep neck lines. Painful breast cancer results in women who prefer closure style on clothes, front closure clothes and garments that hide body shape. However, the larger reduction range of breast cancer patients and those with painful breast cancer prefer garments that hide body shape and are looser size clothes with sleeves.

  • This paper presents a new evaporative system monitoring method using a virtual HC sensor for an automotive on-board diagnosis. A development was made at providing mathematical expressions from the lambda control information to estimate the HC mass flow purged into the intake manifold from the canister for implementing a virtual HC sensor. The change of the lambda averagevalue reflected the influence of the additional fuel from purging results the sensor estimation of the purged HC amount. Based on this virtual HC sensor, a new evaporative system monitoring method was proposed comparing the amount of purged HC amount with the amount of the HC gas evaporated from the fuel tank and absorbed into the canister. Finally, the method was validated with a simulation using the data logged from the retail car.

  • A special concern is paid to the risks with which small-sized water resources systems are confronted in supplying water in the far future. Taking the Gwangdong dam reservoir as a case study, the authors seek to understand demand-side and supply-side disturbances of a reservoir, which, respectively, corresponds to effects of water demand changes on the intake amount and those of climate changes on the inflow amount. In result, it is demonstrated that both disturbances in the next 50 years are almost unpredictable. Yet the projection ranges, thought of as relatively reliable information that models offer, reveal that severity and period of water shortage is very likely to change. It is therefore concluded that water resources management requires more rigorous approaches to overcoming high uncertainties. The methods and models for projecting those disturbances are selected, based on practicality and applicability. Nevertheless, they show a large usefulness, especially in dealing with data shortage and reducing the needs for expensive modeling resources.
