The synthesis and characterization of a nitrobenzene modified hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arene 1 are described. When calixarene 1 bound with ammonium ions carrying fluorescence group, the fluorescence of ammonium ions were effectively quenched and chang e of emission intensity provided the information of ammonium ion binding events to the calixarene 1.
Methylobacterium organophilum can use nitrogen in the form of ammonium ions ($($NH_4$)_2SO_4\;and\;NH_4Cl) and from nonammonium sources such as glycine, alanine, peptone, and yeast extract. When potassium was limited, significantly more PHB was produced when the ammonium ion was the nitrogen source rather than a nonammonium form. With ammonium, the amount of PHB produced was 0.50-0.53 g PHB/l or $52.0~53.2\%$ of the dry cell weight. If nitrogen was from a nonammonium source, the respective values were 0.04~0.06 g PHB/1 or $8.1~11.3\%$ of dry cell weight. When ammonium sulfate was the sole source of nitrogen under potassium-limited conditions, cell growth and PHB accumulation increased as the pH increased from 6.0 to 7.5. Cell growth and PHB amount at pH 7.5 were 2.50 g dry cell weight/1 and 1.40 g PHB/1, respectively.
The structures and complexation energies of penta-O-alkylated 1b and penta-O-tert-butyl ester 1e of p-tert-butylcalix[5]arene and their simplified structures (2b and 2e) toward a series of alkyl ammonium guests have been calculated by a semi-empirical AM1 method. For AM1 calculations, complexation efficiencies of the simplified host 2e are very similar to the values of host 1e. The complexes of simplified host 2e with alkyl ammonium ions also have been optimized by ab initio HF/6-31G method. The calculated complexation efficiencies for 2e by ab initio method have been found to be bigger in magnitude than the values obtained by AM1 calculations for linear alkyl ammonium guests. Calculation results show that all of the calix[5]aryl derivatives investigated in this study have much better complexation ability toward ammonium cation without alkyl group compared with other alkyl ammonium guests. Ab initio calculations also well duplicate the molecular discriminating behaviors of calix[5]arene derivative 2e between butyl ammonium ions: $n-BuNH_3^+\;>\;iso-BuNH_3^+\;>\;sec-BuNH_3^+\;>\;tert-BuNH_3^+$.
The conductivity of the electrolyte used plays a critical role in the optimization of the performance of electrochemical double layer capacitors. However, when the difference in the conductivities of different electrolytes is not significant (only 10-20%), the conductivity has little effect on the capacitance. On the other, unlike the conductivity and viscosity of the electrolyte, the cation size directly influences the capacitance. Cyclic ions have a smaller effective radius than that of the corresponding acyclic ions because the acyclic alkyl groups have a greater number of conformational degrees of freedom, such as the rotational, bending, and stretching modes. Consequently, because of the smaller effective size of the cyclic ions, cells containing electrolytes with such ions exhibit higher capacitances than do those with their acyclic counterparts.

An ammonium ion with a size and charge similar to that of potassium can bind to valinomycin, which is used as an ion carrier for potassium, and cause a meaningful interference effect on the detection of potassium ions. Currently, there are few ion sensors that correct the interference effect of ammonium ions, and there are few studies that specifically suggest the mechanism of the interference effect. By fabricating a SPCE-based potassium ion-selective electrode, the electromotive force was measured in the concentration range of potassium in the nutrient solution, and the linear range was measured to be 10-5 to 10-2 M, and the detection limit was 10-5.19 M. And the interference phenomenon of the potassium sensor was investigated in the concentration range of ammonium ions present in the nutrient solution. Therefore, a data-based analysis strategy using deep learning was presented as a method to minimize the interference effect.
This study proposes the use of a cobalt-based Prussian blue analogue (Co-PBA; potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate), as an adsorbent for the cost-effective recovery of aqueous ammonium ions. The characterization of Co-PBA involved various techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and zeta potential. The prepared Co-PBA reached an adsorption equilibrium for ammonium ions within approximately 480 min, which involved both surface adsorption and subsequent diffusion into the interior. The isotherm experiment revealed a maximum adsorption capacity of 37.29 mg/g, with the Langmuir model indicating a predominance of chemical monolayer adsorption. Furthermore, the material consistently demonstrated adsorption efficiency across a range of pH conditions. Notably, adsorption was observed even when competing cations were present. Co-PBA emerges as a readily synthesized adsorbent, underscoring its efficacy in ammonium removal and selectivity toward ammonium.
In this study, the effect of the solubility of ammonium metavanadate and the decomposition ratio of ammonium ions on a precipitation reaction-the precipitation of ammonium metavanadate by adding ammonium chloride to a sodium vanadate solution-was investigated. As the precipitation temperature and pH increased, the decomposition ratio of ammonium ions increased, and the decomposition ratio was greater than 81% at 45 ℃ and pH 9.3. This was approximately four times higher than that at pH 8. The result of the precipitation reaction, in view of these two factors that significantly influence the precipitation reaction, was that the precipitation yield increased as the temperature increased. However, the effect of temperature was not significant above 35 ℃. A kinetic study of the precipitation reaction revealed that the activation energy of the reaction was 42.3 kJ/mol. Therefore, considering the solubility of ammonium metavanadate, the lower the temperature, the better the vanadium recovery yield. Additionally, considering the decomposition of ammonium ions, the lower the pH of the aqueous solution, the more advantageous. However, at pH 8 or less, sodium polyvanadate is precipitated and the purity of vanadium oxide may reduce.

Recovery of low level nitric acid and sulfuric acid ions, which were contained in wastewater of a wet scrubber for de-NOx and de-SOx from ship engines, was attempted as fertilizing materials. This study utilized a selective extraction method using four organic solvents to precipitate the solid salts of ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. The IR analysis showed almost same composition of the extracted ammonium salts with a commercial product, and recovery rate of nitrogen and sulfuric ions was 89% and 80% respectively. It was found that the selectivity and solubility consequently could be the crucial factors to recover the low level ions from the waste scrubbing water.
The porcine epidemic diarrhea virus(PEDV) production yield in spinner flask cultures using Vero cells immobilized on microcarriers was improved by the selective adsorption of ammonium ions in a Carberry type bioreactor which was equipped with Phillipsite-Gismondine synthetic zeolite. Though the apparent cell growth seemed to be lower than that of control due to the aggregation of microcarriers between impeller shaft and the adsorbent, zeolite was found to not to be toxic to Vero cell, considering estimated glucose and lactate changes. Zeolite was observed to remove ammonium ions effectively in both steps of cell growth and virus production. In virus production, the virus titer with zeolite was two times higher than that without zeolite. Consequently, zeolite was found to be an ideal adsorbent for higher production of virus vaccine with the effective removal of ammonium ions.
The removal and readsorption effects of pine and oak bark grown in Korea on water pollution caused by heavy metal ions have been investigated. Bark saturated with heavy metal ions is refleshed with 0.1 N ammonium acetate and then its readsorption has been done. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Adsorption effect of pine bark is similiar to that of oak bark, and 20-40 meshed bark gives the best results. 2. 0.1 N amonium acetate of pH 7 shows more elutriative than the others such as pH 3 hydrochloric acid, pH 10 ammonium hydroxide and pH 7 water. 3 Pine bark refleshed with 0.1 N ammonium acetate gets two times as effective in adsorption as raw bark, and shows more effective than oak bark.
