  • Cyclic fatigue experiment was carried out to predict the life time of alumina ceramics. Four kinds of model were suggested to obtain the adequate representative static stress corresponding to the cyclic stress applied to the alumina specimens. Arithmetic mean stress model gives 21.81 of the crack growth exponent, integrated stress model gives 22.15, maximum stress model gives 24.57, and equivalent static stress model gives 24.43. It is considered that the equivalent static stress model is the most reasonable and gives the best adequate crack growth exponents value.

  • High purity alumina and amorphous silica were prepared from Ha-dong kaolin by means of appliance of sulfuric acid. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the formation of aluminum sulfate was investigated. The precipitation conditions ofaluminum sulfate from the sulfuric acid solution with ethanol and ammonium hydroxide were deteremined. In the optimum condition, the conversion of aluminum oxide in kaolin to aluminum oxide powder was 85.0 percent. Alumina powder was prepared by calcination of the precipitates, and its purity was 99.0 percent.

  • In Part III, the paper will show that an alumina-carbon nanotube-niobium nanocomposite produced fracture toughness values that are several times higher than that of pure nanocrystalline alumina. It was possible to take advantage of both fiber-toughening and ductile-metal toughening in this investigation.

  • The change of permeation mechanism from Knudsen diffusion to micropore diffusion was observed after CVD modification of an alumina-sol coated alumina support which was prepared by slip coating process. Permselectivities of He/N2, H2/N2, and CO2/N2 were 5.67, 5.02, and 1.44, respectively. These values were higher than those under Knudsen diffusion controlled region.

  • Although ceramic plates with many micro-hales are used as MCP (Micro-channel plate) for electron amplification, catalytic converters, filters, electrical insulators and thermal conductors in integrated circuits, the drilling of micro-hales in the ceramics is difficult because of their low thermal conductivity, high hardness and brittleness. Therefore, in this work, the machining of ceramic green body fellowed by sintering of green body was employed fur fabricating ceramic plates with many micro-holes. The micro-drilling of alumina green body was performed with diamond abrasive WC drills, and the cutting force w.r.t. drilling times was measured for the determination of toot life. From the investigation of the wear of micro-drill tip w.r.t. drilling times, the wear mechanism of tip during micro-drilling of ceramic green body was suggested.

  • Ceramic tapes were fabricated by ultrasonically spraying slurries of monodispersed spherical and alumina powders. Effects of slurry compositions on tape forming were investigated. A relatively fast rate of solvent evaporation caused pores and cracks to be formed. A good chemical affinity between solvent and binder gave rise to binder separation resulting in inhomogeneous distribution of binder. Defect-free silica tapes with uniform distribution of particle packing and the binder were obtained from the solvent having a low chemical affinity and a slow evaporation rate and containing appropriate amounts of the binder and the plasticizer. Tape thickness could be controlled by adjusting solids loadings and slurry feed rates. It was possible to fabricate a tape in 15 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness from 7 vol% alumina slurry.

  • In this study, presintered and full sintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the effect of cutting fluid in machinability. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. When the presintered ceramics were wet machined with sintered diamond tool, the tool wear becomes extremely large, and higher cutting speed can be used than in the case of full sintered ceramics. The productivity of wet cutting with the sintered diamond tool is much higher than that of dry cutting. In the case of the CBN and ceramic tools, the tool wear were smaller at wet cutting than at dry cutting, especially exhibiting considerably larger grooved tool wear in wet cutting with ceramic tool.

  • Alumina($Al_2O_3$)-Titanium Diboride($TiB_2) particulate composites were fabricated by hot pressing of the powder mixture that was prepared from Self-propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) product and commercial powders. Their propeties were examined in order to find feasibility of using SHS for making the high performance ceramic composite. $TiB_2 particles obtained by grinding the SHS product were finer than the commercial powders. Hot pressed sample containing the SHS products exhibited higher strength than the one prepared from the commercial powders.

  • Calcium-hexaluminate phase $(CA_6)$ is known to be effective for the crack shielding due to the spinel block crystal structure. In this study, we focused to the control of $CA_6$ morphology for good damage tolerance behavior in alumina and zirconia/calcium-hexaluminate $(CA_6)$ composites. Calcium-hexaluminate $(CA_6)$ composites were prepared from zirconia, alumina and calcium carbornate powders. Calcium-hexaluminate $(CA_6)$ phase was obtained by the solid reaction through the formation of intermediate phase $(CA_2)$. $CA_6$ phase showed the column type abnormal grain grown behavior composed of small blocks. Due to the typical microstructure of $CA_6$, alumina and zirconia/calcium-hexaluminate composites provide a well controlled crack propagation behavior.

  • Glass-infiltrated alumina, which can be used as an all-ceramic dental crown, was prepared. The glasses in the system of SiO$_2$-B$_2$O$_3$-Al$_2$O$_3$-CaO-La$_2$O$_3$with various amount of $Al_2$O$_3$infiltrated into a porous sintered alumina. The effect of $Al_2$O$_3$on the infiltration characteristics and its mechanical strength were studied. The corrosion of the sintered alumina by infiltrated glasses was prevented by increasing the amount of $Al_2$O$_3$in the glass batches, this increased the bending strength of the glass infiltrated alumina composite. The crack like voids in the sintered alumina was a cause of the deteriorating the mechanical strength of the composite, and this can be eliminated by sintering the alumina at 130$0^{\circ}C$. Glass infiltration under the vacuum atmosphere enhanced the hording strength of the composite up to 453$\pm$31 MPa.
