  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of measurements obtained after the superimposition of three-dimensional (3D) digital models by comparing them with those obtained from lateral cephalometric radiographs and photocopies of plaster models for the evaluation of upper molar distalization. Methods: Data were collected from plaster models and lateral cephalometric radiographs of 20 Class II patients whose maxillary first molars were distalized with an intraoral distalizer. The posterior movements of the maxillary first molars were evaluated using lateral cephalometric radiographs (group CP), photocopies of plaster models (group PH), and digitized 3D models (group TD). Additionally, distalization and expansion of the other teeth and the degrees of molar rotation were measured in group PH and group TD and compared between the two groups. Results: No significant difference was observed regarding the amount of molar distalization among the three groups. A comparison of the aforementioned parameters between group PH and group TD did not reveal any significant difference. Conclusions: 3D digital models are reliable to assess the results of upper molar distalization and can be considered a valid alternative to conventional measurement methods.

  • The controversy between Lewis and Spanier's theory and Thomas and kleber's theory on marital satisfaction and marital stability was tested empirically. The results show that while marital satisfaction was the best predictor for marital stability the impact of alternative attractions and external pressures to remaim married was more complicated than both theories predicted depending on the nature of alternative attractions. Thomas and Kleber's theory was supported in most of groups Contrary to Lewis and Spanier's theory alternative atteractions did not negatively affect marital stability of marriages of high qulity. Contrary to both theories external pressures to remain married was not an important predictor of marital stability . In some cases high external pressures to remain married even lowered marital stability. The validity of both theories are discussed.

  • Software cost estimation is an important both for buyers and sellers(developers). We reviewed domestic and foreign researches and practices on software cost estimation with function point method comprehensively, In this paper, we derived four promising alternative function point models. They are an IFPUG(International Function Point User Group)-based model(Model I), a shorthand model for client/sever software systems(Model II), a data-oricnted model for relatively large software projects(Model III), and a general- purpose function point model for non business application softwares as well as business applications(Model IV). Empirical data shows that Model I, II, and IV are very useful function point models. In particular, model II and IV look very useful models since they are concise and accurate. These models can be incorporated in a new improved guideline for software cost estimation. General opinion survey shows that Model I, II and IV are preferable. There are no significant differences in preference between buyers and sellers. The survey also shows that users think function point method is better than step(line of code)-oriented cost estimation methods in many ways including objectivity and estimation accuracy.

  • Prediction of firm bankruptcy have been extensively studied in accounting, as all stockholders in a firm have a vested interest in monitoring its financial performance. The objective of this paper is to develop the hybrid models for bankruptcy prediction. The proposed hybrid models are two phase. Phase one are (a) DA-assisted neural network, (b) Logit-assisted neural network, and (c) Genetic-assisted neural network. And, phase two are (a) DA-assisted Case based reasoning, and (b) Genetic-assisted Case based reasoning. In the variables selection, We are focusing on three alternative methods - linear discriminant analysis, logit analysis and genetic algorithms - that can be used empirically select predictors for hybrid model in bankruptcy prediction. Empirical results using Korean medium-sized firms data show that hybrid models are very promising neural network models and case based reasoning for bankruptcy prediction in terms of predictive accuracy and adaptability.

  • Growth of pigs is influenced by many factors. To assist pig producers in the evaluation of alternative feeding and management strategies growth models have been developed. In the Netherlands the Technical Model Pigfeeding (TMV) is developed. This model predicts the influence of feed intake, feed composition, genotype, sex and climate on growth, body composition, gross margin and mineral excretion of healthy growing/finishing pigs. The purpose of TMV is to support information services, feed companies, researchers and students. In addition to providing accurate predictions, a model should also be user-friendly and wishes of the user should be taken into account to stimulate application of the model in practice. In this paper, the theoretical background of TMV and a methodology to stimulate application of models in practice will be described.

  • Multi-criteria decision making is deducing the relative importance in the criterion of decision making and each alternative which is able to making a variety of choices measures the preferred degree in the series of town ranking criterions. Moreover, this is possible by synthesizing them systematically. In general, a fundamental problem decision maker solve for multi-criteria decision making is evaluating a set of activities which an considered as the target logically, and this kind of work is evaluated and synthesized by various criterions of the value which a chain of activities usually hold in common. In this paper, we use the compensatory models for the optimal decision making. For the purpose of optimal decision making, the data of five different car models are used in Europe.

  • This paper presents a new distance relay modeling techniques which avoids unnecessary computational procedure. A general-purpose simulation language, called MODELS, has been added to the software ATP(Alternative Transients Program) providing a new option to perform numerical and logical manipulations of variables of an electrical system. This language has been designed to replace the previous option TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems) which permits to simulate a control system in conjunction with a large power network. One purpose of this study is to build a structure for modeling of digital distance relays within EMTP MODELS. Contrary to the traditional methods, the new method using MODELS reduce the number of simulation steps in modeling the distance relay.

  • The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an interface between cerebral blood and the brain parenchyma. As a gate keeper, BBB regulates passage of nutrients and exogeneous compounds. Owing to this highly selective barrier, many drugs targeting brain diseases are not likely to pass through the BBB. Thus, a large amount of time and cost have been paid for the development of BBB targeted therapeutics. However, many drugs validated in in vitro models and animal models have failed in clinical trials primarily due to the lack of an appropriate BBB model. Human BBB has a unique cellular architecture. Different physiologies between human and animal BBB hinder the prediction of drug responses. Therefore, a more physiologically relevant alternative BBB model needs to be developed. In this review, we summarize major features of human BBB and current BBB models and describe organ-on-chip models for BBB modeling and their applications in neurological complications.

  • Recently, an analysis method using machine learning for solving problems in coastal and ocean engineering has been highlighted. Machine learning models are effective modeling tools for predicting specific parameters by learning complex relationships based on a specified dataset. In coastal and ocean engineering, various studies have been conducted to predict dependent variables such as wave parameters, tides, storm surges, design parameters, and shoreline fluctuations. Herein, we introduce and describe the application trend of machine learning models in coastal and ocean engineering. Based on the results of various studies, machine learning models are an effective alternative to approaches involving data requirements, time-consuming fluid dynamics, and numerical models. In addition, machine learning can be successfully applied for solving various problems in coastal and ocean engineering. However, to achieve accurate predictions, model development should be conducted in addition to data preprocessing and cost calculation. Furthermore, applicability to various systems and quantifiable evaluations of uncertainty should be considered.
