A Study on Combustion Characteristics of Methyl/Ethyl Butyrate blend (메틸/에틸 부틸레이트 혼합연료의 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study is a part of the project that investigates a possibility of using methyl/ethyl butyrate as an alternative material of MTBE. To investigate characteristics of the two materials, a 2.0L 4-cylinders SI engine that was coupled to an 160kw EC engine dynamometer was used and operated several conditions. Two exhaust gas analyzer was used to measure CO, NOx and THC of after and before of a catalyst. Also, to compare combustion characteristics of the fuels a combustion analyzer was used for measuring pressure of inside of a cylinder. The results show no special difference between MTBE and the two materials from the emission and combustion characteristics aspect.

  • Since resources of fossil fuels are limited, development of alternative energies is emphasized and research on new-regenerative energy is actively in progress worldwide. In present research, physical and chemical characteristics of mixed fuel are analyzed in detail for the different mixture rate of conventional and bio-diesel and ultrasonic irradiation time. Experimental setup consists of ultrasonic generator, vibrator, horn, and reflector. Various physical and chemical characteristics of fuel are investigated for volumetric mixture rate of bio-diesel from 0 to 100%. As results, viscosity and surface tension is increased as mixture rate of bio-diesel is increased. Also, molecular splits and reunions are increased and decreased repeatedly after some period of time as ultrasonic energy irradiation time is increased. As conclusion of experiments, Olefin rate, Branch index, and Aromatic rate are influenced by ultrasonic irradiation time.

  • In this study, conventional head-end processes of spent TRISO fuel have been reviewed to develope more effective treatment methods. The main concerns in the TRISO treatment are to effectively separate the carbon and SiC contained in the TRISO particles. The crush-burn scheme which was considered in the early stages of the development has been replaced by the crush-leach process because of $^{14}C$ problems as a second waste during the process. However there are still many obstacles to overcome in the reported processes. Hence, innovative thermomechanical concepts to breach the coating layers of the TRISO particle with a minimized amount of second waste are proposed in this paper and their principles are described in detail.

A Study on the Combustion of Fish Oil as Alternative Fuels for Diesel Engines (디젤기관용대체연료로서의 어유연소에 관한 연구)

  • The combustion characteristics of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils were investigated at various blending rate of fish oil in diesel engine and constant volume combustion bomb. The evaporation and combustion duration of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils were respectively different high and low temperature. The dependence of ignition delay on the temperature was different in high and low temperature ranges which were divided at the 773K. The ignition delay become longer than that of diesel oil as the blending rate of fish oil increases, and its difference were larger at different loads. The densityof smoke was lower as the blending rate of fish oil increases, and the rate offuel consumption showed no significant difference between diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils.

  • Most Plastic Green Houses in Korea are made according the European weather condition, which lead to have very low solar energy efficiency. Moreover, the function of green houses, as well as the structure of them, has not changed for Korean weather condition. Therefore, the structure and function of them should adopt the regional weather condition in order to improve the energy efficiency. This paper investigates the current plastic green housesin Korea, and presents an alternative for improving the energy efficiency. The elements of green houses were investigated. When using a partial opaque insulation with a thermal storage body, the difference of indoor air temperature became 20C during daytime, and 5C during night, which will save massive fossil fuels.

  • Recently, to avoid global warming, reduction of $CO_2$ generation has been demanded. Each car manufacture takes positive actions for improvement in fuel consumption by various kinds of countermeasures, e.g. improving engine efficiency, using alternative fuels, lightening the car body. Regarding lightening of the car body, aluminum alloys and high tensile strength steels has been gradually adopted as lightweight materials. However, such materials are normally not easy to be treated with zinc phosphate system. Focusing the pre-treatment processes, low temperature phosphate system could be demanded for energy saving. This time, new surface conditioning process for lightweight materials and low temperature phosphate system shall be discussed.

  • Fuel cell systems offer high energy efficiencies for transportation application. In addition, they can use alcohols and alternative fuels as the fuel, while producing little or no noxious emissions. Fuel cell-powered energy source should be competitive in performance characteristics and in capital and maintenance costs with internal combustion engine systems. From computer simulation program, battery and fuel cell energy output and total power profile, motor power, battery energy output, fuel cell energy output. It simulates the performance of fuelcell/battery powered energy source operation over any user inputted transit route cycle, and provides performance criteria through user specifications for preliminary design consideration.

  • Hydrogen-dimethy ether (DME) and hydrogen-diesel compression ignition engine combustion were investigated and compared each other in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Hydrogen and DME were used as low carbon alternative fuels to reduce green house gases and pollutant. Hydrogen was injected at the intake manifold with an injection pressure of 0.5 MPa at fixed injection timing, $-210^{\circ}CA$ aTDC. DME and diesel were injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system at injection pressure of 30 MPa. DME and diesel inejction timing was varied to find the optimum CI combustion to reduce CO, HC and NOx emissions. When DME was injected early, CO and HC emissions were high while NOx emission was low. Fuel consumption, heat release rate, and exhaust emissions were measured to analyze each combustion characteristics of each ignition promoter. Fuel consumption was decreased when diesel was used as an ignition promoter. This is due to the lower volatility of diesel which created more stratified charge than DME.

Performance characteristics of CNG engine at various compression ratios (압축비 변경에 따른 CNG기관의 성능특성 연구)

  • Natural gas is one of the most promising alternative fuels for automative vehicles, because it has lower exhaust emissions and better fuel economy characteristics than gasoline and can be used in conventional engines with a little modification. In the present study, a conventional gasoline engine was modified to a CNG dedicated engine, which can be operated with CNG( compressed natural gas) only, and a engine bench test was performed at various compression ratios. As a result, it was revealed that the prototype CNG engine can be operated with lower exhaust emissions, better fuel economy and better thermal efficiency, but with a sightly reduced brake horse power, compared to the conventional gasoline engine.

  • LPG is considered as one of the most prominent alternative automotive fuels in worldwide. However, conventional mixer system can not meet the emission regulations as the mileage accumulation increased. Recently, much attention is focused on the development of LPG liquid injection fuel systems to increase the engine performance and reduce the exhaust emissions. This study evaluates the LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG injection) engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics using a 3.0 liter LPG engine. The fuel supply system and engine management system were changed from FBM into LPLi to control the precise mixture ratio and optimized spark advance.
