Effect of Feeding Head Lettuce, Water Spinach, Ruzi grass or Mimosa pigra on Feed Intake, Digestibility and Growth in Rabbits

  • The performance of growing rabbits fed Ruzi grass (Brachiaria ruziziensis), head lettuce (Lactuca sativa) residue, Mimosa pigra and water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) was studied in an experiment using 64 rabbits (4 males and 4 females per treatment) of 2 breeds, New Zealand White and a crossbred between New Zealand White and native breed. The rabbits had an average initial weight of 668 g, were about 6 weeks old and were housed in individual pens. The foliages were fed ad libitum and a commercial concentrate was fed at a restricted level of 2% of body weight on a dry matter (DM) basis. In the digestibility experiment, the rabbits, 4 per foliage and males only, were fed the same foliages as in the growth experiment but without concentrate. Daily weight gain was lower in the group fed Ruzi grass, 14.8 g/d (p<0.001) compared to 17.6, 18.5 and 18.4 g/d for head lettuce, Mimosa pigra and water spinach, respectively. Feed intake and feed conversion ratio were lowest for the rabbits fed water spinach, 66 g DM/d and 3.6 kg DM/kg live weight, respectively. The New Zealand White breed had a higher daily gain than the crossbred rabbits (p<0.05), 18.0 and 16.7 g/d, respectively. There were no significant differences in feed intake, growth or feed conversion ratio due to sex. The digestibility coefficients of DM, organic matter, crude protein, crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber were significantly lower (p<0.001) in the rabbits fed Ruzi grass. Breed and sex had no effect on digestibility. In conclusion, feeding head lettuce residue, Mimosa pigra and water spinach resulted in higher growth rate and digestibility than feeding Ruzi grass and can be recommended as alternative feeds.

Effect of different diets on growth and development of the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

  • Many insects have gained increasing attention as an alternative protein for humans. Among those, the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), was recently approved as a general food ingredient by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. For industrial utilization of G. bimaculatus, mass rearing techniques and production system should be standardized first. In this study, we investigated the effects of five different feeds on the growth and development of G. bimaculatus. Feed is the one of the key factors that has considerable effects on rearing insects. With five different kinds of feed on $1^{st}$, $3^{rd}$, and $5^{th}$ instar nymphs, the change of survival rate, body weight were monitored up to eight wk after hatching. We concluded that 50% of soybean flour, 20% of corn powder, 10% of rice bran, 9% of milk serum, 10% of rice flour, 0.5% of microorganisms, and 0.5% of multivitamins and minerals (diet C) was the best mix for promoting growth and development of $3^{rd}$ instar nymphs compared to the control diet.

Screening of Immunostimulatory Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria from Chicken Feces as Animal Probiotics

  • The principal objective of this study was to screen and select acid-tolerant Lactobacillus strains from chicken feces, feeds, and other sources. Fourty six strains evidencing acid tolerance (pH 3.5) were isolated in this study. Among them, nine strains exhibited marked immunostimulatory effects. Therefore, nine candidate strains were characterized for probiotic use. In order to evaluate macrophage activation, NO production was measured using RAW 264.7 cells. In particular, three strains (FC812, FC222, and FC113) evidenced the highest levels of NO production measured at $38.39{\pm}20.01,\;35.06{\pm}27.73$, and $33.88{\pm}15.99{\mu}M$, respectively, at a concentration of $10^{8}CFU/mL$. The majority of strains, with the exception of strain FC322, evidenced marked resistance to artificial gastric juice (pH 2.5 with 1%(w/v) pepsin). Additionally, strains FC222, FC421, FC511, and FC721 were highly resistant to artificial bile acid (0.1%(w/v) oxgall), whereas strains FC113, FC322, FC422, FC621, and FC812 were the least resistant to bile. All nine strains exerted antimicrobial effects against chickenrelated pathogens. Additionally, all nine strains were found to be resistant to several antibiotics. The isolated strains, except for strain FC322, were tentatively identified as Lactobacillus salivarius, using an API 50 CHL kit. These results demonstrate that some probiotic organisms may potentially probiotic properties, and thus may serve as an effective alternative to antibiotics in animal applications.

Fermentation Characteristics and Microbial Diversity of Tropical Grass-legumes Silages

  • Calliandra calothyrsus preserved in silage is an alternative method for improving the crude protein content of feeds for sustainable ruminant production. The aim of this research was to evaluate the quality of silage which contained different levels of C. calothyrsus by examining the fermentation characteristics and microbial diversity. Silage was made in a completely randomized design consisting of five treatments with three replications i.e.: R0, Pennisetum purpureum 100%; R1, P. purpureum 75%+C. calothyrsus 25%;, R2, P. purpureum 50%+C. calothyrsus 50%; R3, P. purpureum 25%+C. calothyrsus 75%; and R4, C. calothyrsus 100%. All silages were prepared using plastic jar silos (600 g) and incubated at room temperature for 30 days. Silages were analyzed for fermentation characteristics and microbial diversity. Increased levels of C. calothyrsus in silage had a significant effect (p<0.01) on the fermentation characteristics. The microbial diversity index decreased and activity was inhibited with increasing levels of C. calothyrsus. The microbial community indicated that there was a population of Lactobacillus plantarum, L. casei, L. brevis, Lactococcus lactis, Chryseobacterium sp., and uncultured bacteria. The result confirmed that silage with a combination of grass and C. calothyrsus had good fermentation characteristics and microbial communities were dominated by L. plantarum.

  • 본 연구에서는 원유와 사일리지, 전통발효식품 등으로부터 유방염 원인균에 대한 항균성을 가지는 유산균을 분리하였고, 이들 중 원유에서는 79, 91-3 균주와 전통발효식품에서는 SA131, NK24, NK34, 32, 44-1 균주, 사일리지에서는 253, 261, 262, 263, 265 균주, 닭분변에서 B32, C23 균주에서 유방염 원인균에 대한 비교적 높은 항균력을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 새로운 항생제 대체물질의 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy for Measuring Purine Derivatives in Urine and Estimation of Microbial Protein Synthesis in the Rumen for Sheep

  • The efficiency of the luminal fermentation process influences overall efficiency of luminal production, animal health and reproduction. Ruminant production systems have a significant impact on the global environment, as well. Animal wastes contribute to pollution of the environment as ammonia volatilized to the air and nitrate leached to ground water. Microbial protein synthesis in the rumen satisfies a large proportion of the protein requirements of animals. Quantifying the microbial synthesis is possible by using markers for lumen bacteria and protozoa such as nucleic acids, purine bases, some specific amino acids, or by isotopic $^{15}N,^{32}P,\;and\;^{35}S$ labelled feeds. All those methods require cannulated animals, they are time-consuming and some methods are very expensive as well. Many attempts have been made to find an alternative method for indirect measurement of microbial synthesis in intact animals. The present investigations aimed to assess possibilities of NIRS for prediction of purine nitrogen excretion and ruminal microbial nitrogen synthesis by NIR spectra of urine. Urine samples were collected from 12 growing sheep,6 of them male, and 6- female. The sheep were included in feeding experiment. The ration consisted of sorghum silage and protein supplements -70:30 on dry matter basis. The protein supplements were chosen to differ in protein degradability. The urine samples were collected daily in a vessel containing $60m{\ell}$ 10% sulphuric acid to reduce pH below 3 and diluted with tap water to 4 liters. Samples were stored in plastic bottles and frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ until chemical and NIRS analysis. The urine samples were analyzed for purine derivates - allantoin, uric acid, xantine and hypoxantine content. Microbial nitrogen synthesis in the lumen was calculated according to Chen and Gomes, 1995. Transmittance urine spectra with sample thickness 1mm were obtained by NIR System 6500 spectrophotometer in the spectral range 1100-2500nm. The calibration was performed using ISI software and PLS regression, respectively. The following statistical results of NIRS calibration for prediction of purine derivatives and microbial protein synthesis were obtained.(Table Omitted). The result of estimation of purine nitrogen excretion and microbial protein synthesis by NIR spectra of urine showed accuracy, adequate for rapid evaluation of microbial protein synthesis for a large number of animals and different diets. The results indicate that the advantages of the NIRS technology can be extended into animal physiological studies. The fast and low cost NIRS analyses could be used with no significant loss of accuracy when microbial protein synthesis in the lumen and the microbial protein flow in the duodenum are to be assessed by NIRS.

Growth Performance, Carcass and Meat Characteristics of Black Goat Kids Fed Sesame Hulls and Prosopis juliflora Pods

  • Finding alternative feeds, such as sesame hulls and Prosopis juliflora species can attenuate difficulties of feed shortage and reduce the cost of animal feed in arid and semi-arid countries. Thirty-two Black male kids with similar initial weights (BW = $16.7{\pm}0.80\;kg$) and $120{\pm}5\;d$ of age, were used to evaluate the effect of replacing barley grains and soybean meal with Prosopis juliflora pods (PJP) and sesame hulls (SH) on growth performance, digestibility and carcass and meat characteristics. Kids were equally divided into four dietary treatment groups for an 84-d fattening period. Treatment diets had similar crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME). The treatment groups were: (T1) no PJP nor SH, (T2) 10% PJP and 20% SH, (T3) 15% PJP and 15% SH, and (T4) 20% PJP and 10% SH. A tendency was detected (p<0.08) for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intakes that were greater for T2 than T3 and T4 while T1 was not different from all other treatment groups. Ether extract (EE) intake was the greatest (p<0.05) for T2 and the lowest for T1. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) intake was greater (p<0.05) for T2 than T1 while T3 and T4 were intermediate. Final live weight, average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were comparable among different treatment groups. Digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF were similar among all treatment groups, however, EE digestibility was the lowest (p<0.05) for T1 when compared to other treatments. In addition, nitrogen intake, nitrogen in urine and retained and retention percentages were similar among all treatment groups. However, N loss in feces was higher (p<0.05) for T2 than T3 and T4 while T1 was intermediate. No differences were observed among treatment groups with respect to fasting live weight, hot and cold carcass weights, dressing-out percentages, mesenteric fat, visceral organs, carcass cuts percentages and carcass linear dimensions. No differences were also observed for dissected loin, leg, rack and shoulder tissues except in the total bone % for loin cuts and in the meat to bone ratio for rack cuts. T3 has the greatest total bone % and the lowest meat to bone ratio when compared to all other treatment groups. No differences were observed between treatment groups in all quality characteristics of the longissimus muscle. The present study demonstrates the potential of using PJP and SH for growing kids without adverse effects on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality.

곡물 및 사료오염 데옥시니발레놀 및 대사체에 의한 인축질환 연계 생체지표 및 바이오모니터링 (Human and Animal Disease Biomarkers and Biomonitoring of Deoxynivalenol and Related Fungal Metabolites as Cereal and Feed Contaminants)

  • Deoxynivalenol (DON) and related trichothecene mycotoxins are extensively distributed in the cereal-based food and feed stuffs worldwide. Recent climate changes and global grain trade increased chance of exposure to more DON and related toxic metabolites in poorly managed production systems. Monitoring the biological and environmental exposures to the toxins are crucial in protecting human and animals from toxicities of the hazardous contaminants in food or feeds. Exposure biomarkers including urine DON itself are prone to shift to less harmful metabolites by intestinal microbiota and liver metabolic enzymes. De-epoxyfication of DON by gut microbes such as Eubacterium strain BBSH 797 and Eubacterium sp. DSM 11798 leads to more fecal secretion of DOM-1. By contrast, most of plant-derived DON-glucoside is also easily catabolized to free DON by gut microbes, which produces more burden to body. Phase 2 hepatic metabolism also contributes to the glucuronidation of DON, which can be useful urine biomarkers. However, chemical modification could be very typical depending on the anthropologic or genetic background, luminal bacteria, and hepatic metabolic enzyme susceptibility to the toxins in the diet. After toxin exposure, effect biomarkers are also important in estimating the linkage and mechanisms of foodborne diseases in human and animal population. Most prominent adverse effects are demonstrated in the DON-induced immunological and behavioral disorders. For instance, acutely elevated interleukin-8 from insulted gut exposed to dietaty DON is a dominant clinical biomarker in human and animals. Moreover, subchronic exposure to the toxins is associated with high levels of serum IgA, a biological mediator of IgA nephritis. In particular, anorexia monitoring using mouse models are recently developed to monitor the biological activities of DON-induced feed refusal. It is also mechanistically linked to alteration of serotoin and peptide YY, which are promising biomarkers of neurological disorders by the toxins. As animal-alternative biomonitoring, huamn enterocyte-based assay has been developed and more realistic gut mimetic models would be useful in monitoring the effect biomarkers in resposne to toxic contaminants in the future investigations.

상호작용성에 의한 SNS 영향유저 선정에 관한 연구 : 연속적인 참조관계가 있는 블로고스피어를 중심으로 (Finding Influential Users in the SNS Using Interaction Concept : Focusing on the Blogosphere with Continuous Referencing Relationships)

  • 블로그, 페이스북, 트위터와 같은 SNS(Social Network Service)는 유저와 포스트를 노드로, 유저와 포스트, 포스트와 포스트, 또는 유저와 유저 사이에 형성되는 다양한 관계를 링크로 하는 그래프로 표현될 수 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 그래프 구조를 분석하여 다른 유저들의 생각과 행동에 영향을 미치는 영향 유저를 선별하는 방법에 대해 논한다. 기본적인 패러다임으로 기존의 투표성 개념이 아닌, 다양한 시맨틱 웹 자원의 중요도를 평가하기 위해 제안된 상호작용성 개념을 초기 SNS의 하나인 블로고스피어의 영향력 평가에 적용함으로써, 여러 모의 실험을 통해 그 타당성과 적용 가능성을 입증하였다. 모의 실험은 각 대안이 제공하는 결과의 타당성 정도에 따라 성능을 비교 분석할 수 있는 네트워크 모형을 디자인하여 사용하였다. 또, 이러한 네트워크 모형에 대한 링크 가중치 튜닝의 결과 변화를 살펴봄으로써, 가중치 조합의 차이에서 발생하는 실험 오차를 줄이고, 실제 적용의 용이함을 비교 분석하였다. 부가적으로, 스팸 필터링 목적에서 포스트 컨텐츠 점수를 링크 구조 기반 방법 안에 포함시킬 수 있는 방법도 제안하였다. 본 연구는 SNS 영향유저 선별에 대한 연구의 출발점으로서, 다음과 같은 점에서 기존 연구와 구별된다. 첫째, 스크랩, 댓글, RSS, 친구 등 기존 연구에서 유의미한 속성으로 간주했지만, 그래프 기반 방법으로 함께 고려할 수 없었던 다양한 영향력 속성들을 종합적으로 반영할 수 있는 그래프 기반 영향력 평가 프레임웍을 제시한다. 둘째, 이 프레임웍은 영향력이 높은 개체들과 상호작용하는 개체가 영향력이 낮은 개체들과 상호작용하는 개체보다 높은 영향력을 갖게 되는 일반적인 현상을 구현할 수 있는 양방향성을 반영한다. 셋째, 영향력 평가 면에서 다른 사람들의 추종액션을 유발한 정도를 가장 중요한 요인으로 고려하여, 일련의 참조관계에 대해 기존의 페이지랭크나 HITS(Hypertext Induced Topic Selection)와는 다른 관점에서 접근하였다.

거세한우 비육후기 보리곡실 발효사료 급여에 따른 성장과 도체특성에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics by Fermented Barley Grain Feeding in Post-fattening Hanwoo Steers)

  • 본 연구는 사료용 보리의 이용성을 향상시키기 위해 등숙 전 보리를 수확과 동시에 발효 처리한 보리곡실 발효사료를 비육후기 거세한우 적정 급여수준 및 기간을 구명하기 위하여 실시하였다. 본 연구는 보리곡실 발효사료의 적정 급여량을 구명하기 위하여 22개월령 비육후기 한우 거세우 32두(603.4±42.7kg)를 4개 처리구 당 8두씩 공시하여 약 9개월간 사육하였고(시험1), 적정 급여 기간을 구명하기 위하여 22개월령 비육후기 48두(625.8±13.1kg)를 4개 처리구 당 12두씩 이용하여 30개월령까지 약 9개월 동안 사육하였다(시험2). (시험1)은 비육후기 배합사료 급여량 10kg를 급여하는 대조구(Control) 배합사료 급여량의 10%를 보리곡실 발효사료로 대체 급여하는 처리구(TRT 1), 20%를 급여하는 처리구(TRT 2), 30%를 급여하는 처리구(TRT 3)등 4개의 처리구를 두었고, 각 처리구의 배합사료와 보리곡실 발효사료 급여량은 각각 9, 2.1kg, 8, 4.2kg, 7 및 7, 6.3kg을 급여하였고 조사료로 볏짚을 1.5 kg 급여하였다. (시험2)는 (시험1)의 결과 10%대체구가 적절한 것으로 판단되어 적정급여기간을 구명하기 위해 비육후기 배합사료 9kg를 급여하는 대조구(Control), 보리곡실 발효사료를 배합사료의 10% 대체급여기간을 출하전 3개월(TRT 1), 6개월(TRT 2), 9개월(TRT32)등 4개의 처리구를 두었고, 각 처리구는 공통적으로 배합사료와 보리곡실 발효사료 각각 8, 2.1kg, 조사료로 볏짚을 1.5 kg를 급여하였다. 처리구별 일당 증체량은 TRT 1이 높았으며, TRT3은 대조구와 비슷한 수준을 보였다. 종료시 체중과 시험기간 중 일당증체량은 보리곡실 발효사료를 10% 급여한 TRT 1이 비교적 높았다. 근내지방은 TRT 2가 6.13으로 가장 높았고, TRT 3이 6.0으로 TRT 1의 5.63, Control의 5.5에 비해 높았다. 일당 증체량은 TRT 1이 0.76kg으로 가장 높았으며 종료시 체중은 보리곡실 발효사료 10%로 출하 전 3개월 간 급여한 TRT 1이 818.8kg로 비교적 높았다. 도체중은 TRT 1이 491.2kg으로 다른 처리구에 비해 다소 높은 경향이었고, 등심면적은 Control이 98.1㎠ 으로 가장 넓었다. 등지방두께는 TRT 3가 가장 얇았다. 육질등급에서 근내지방은 3개월간 급여한 TRT 1이 6.83으로 가장 높았다. 보리곡실 발효사료를 6개월 이상 급여한 TRT 2, 3의 전단력이 2.8내외로 Control과 TRT1 보다 낮아 대체로 연하게 분석 되었다. 이와 관련하여 관능검사의 연도도 좋은 경향이었다. TRT 1에서 Myristicacid (C14:0)가 유의(P<.0895)하게 높았으며, Linolenicacid(C18:3n3)가 TRT 3구가 역시 유의(P<.0029)하게 높았다.
