  • The n-type $(95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3)$ compound was newly fabricated by gas atomization and hot extrusion, which is considered to be a mass production technique of this alloy. The effect of powder size on thermoelectric properties of 0.04% $SbI_3$ doped $95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3$ alloy were investigated. Seebeck coefficient $({\alpha})$ and Electrical resistivity $(\rho)$ increased with increasing powder size due to the decrease in carrier concentration by oxygen content. With increasing powder size, the compressive strength of $95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3$ alloy was increased due to the relative high density. The compound with ${\sim}300\;{\mu}m$ size shows the highest power factor among the four different powder sizes. The rapidly solidified and hot extruded compound using $200[\sim}300{\mu}m$ powder size shows the highest compressive strength.

  • In this study, the effects of powder size and composition on the reflectance of Al-Si based alloys are presented. First, the reflectance of Al-Si bulk and powder are analyzed to confirm the effect of powder size. Results show that the bulk has a higher reflectance than that of powder because the bulk has lower surface defects. In addition, the larger the particle size, the higher is the reflectance because the interparticle space decreases. Second, the effect of composition on the reflectance by the changing composition of Al-Si-Mg is confirmed. Consequently, the reflectance of the alloy decreases with the addition of Si and Mg because dendrite Si and $Mg_2Si$ are formed, and these have lower reflectance than pure Al. Finally, the reflectance of the alloy is due to the scattering of free electrons, which is closely related to electrical conductivity. Measurements of the electrical conductivity based on the composition of the Al-Si-Mg alloy confirm the same tendency as the reflectance.

  • In general, the characteristics of plasma spray coating are strongly dependent on process conditions. In this paper, Mo and Co alloy coating layers were made by plasma spraying with different spray parameters and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), hardnass test, and wear test. It was found that the coating characteristics were mainly affected by phase composition of the powder, spray distance, arc current, and gas flow rate.

  • This study is conducted as a preliminary research to verify the feasibility of Ti-based Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy. Pure-Ti powder is mixed with $Y_2O_3$ powder and subsequently, mechanically alloyed at $-150^{\circ}C$. The Ti-based ODS powder is hot-isostatically pressed and subsequently hot-rolled for recrystallization. The microstructure consists of elongated grains and Y excess fine particles. The oxide particle size is larger than that of the typical Fe-based ODS steel. Tensile test shows that the tensile ductility is approximately 25%, while the strength is significantly higher than that of pure Ti. The high-temperature hardness of the Ti-ODS alloy is also significantly higher than that of pure Ti at all temperatures, while being lower than that of Ti-6Al-4V. The dimple structure is well developed, and no evidence of cleavage fracture surface is observed in the fracture surface of the tensile specimen.

  • Ni-based oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys have a higher usable temperature and better high-temperature mechanical properties than conventional superalloys. They are therefore being explored for applications in various fields such as those of aerospace and gas turbines. In general, ODS alloys are manufactured from alloy powders by mechanical alloying of element powders. However, our research team produces alloy powders in which the $Ni_5Y$ intermetallic phase is formed by an atomizing process. In this study, mechanical alloying was performed using a planetary mill to analyze the milling behavior of Ni-based oxide dispersions strengthened alloy powder in which the $Ni_5Y$ is the intermetallic phase. As the milling time increased, the $Ni_5Y$ intermetallic phase was refined. These results are confirmed by SEM and EPMA analysis on microstructure. In addition, it is confirmed that as the milling increased, the mechanical properties of Ni-based ODS alloy powder improve due to grain refinement by plastic deformation.

  • Nano-sized ZrVFe alloy powders were prepared by the ablation of powder compact in alcobol using a Nd-YAG pulsed Laser. The $Zr_{57}V_{35.}8Fe_{7.2}$ alloy commercially designated as ST707 has long been known as the ideal solution for various vacuum applications. The target for the ablation was sintered pellets of $Zr_{57}V_{35.}8Fe_{7.2}$ alloy powder. The alloy was prepared by arc melting and Hydride-DeHydride method. The ablated powders were mostly circular having fairly large size distribution smaller than 200 nm in all cases. The X-ray diffraction study revealed that the ablated alloy retained the crystal structure of the target alloy. Nevertheless, Fe and V contents in the ablated powder were lower than those in the target alloy. This was believed to result from the high vapour pressures of Fe and V compared to that of Zr. The size of the powders ablated at high energy fluence tends to decrease due at least partly to the breakdown of previously made ones.

  • Ti-50Ni(at%) and Ti-40Ni-10Cu(at%) alloy powders have been fabricated by ball milling method, and their microstructure and phase transformation behavior were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffractions and transmission electron microscopy. In order to investigate the effect of ball milling conditions on transformation behavior, ball milling speed and time were varied. Ti-50Ni alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed more than 250 rpm were amorphous, while those done with the milling speed of 100rpm were crystalline. In contrast to Ti-50Ni alloy powders, Ti-40Ni-10Cu alloy powders were crystalline, irrespective of ball milling conditions. DSC peaks corresponding to martensitic transformation were almost discernable in alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed more than 250 rpm, while those were seen clearly in alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed of 100 rpm. This was attributed to the fact that a strain energy introduced during ball milling suppressed martensitic transformation.

  • The precipitation behaviors of ${\gamma}"(Ni_3Nb)$ in four Ni-base alloys were investigated. The four alloys were forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, IN 718 alloy and ECAPed(equal channel angular pressing) IN 718 alloy. Aging treatment was employed at either $600^{\circ}C$ or $720^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs. The TEM observation and hardness test were performed to identify the formation of ${\gamma}"$. The precipitation of ${\gamma}"$ was noticed after aging at $600^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy, while it was observed after aging at $720^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP. The lower aging temperature for ${\gamma}"$ precipitation in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy than in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP appeared to be due to the severe plastic deformation which occurred during mechanical alloying or ECAP.

  • Laser cladding is a technique for modification of metal surface. In this laser cladding experiment a metal powder feeding system was developed for more efficient laser cladding. This system can reduce processing time and be used simpler than the conventional method. The feeding of metal powder has given a rise to the process for sequential buildup of bulk rapidly solidified materials in the form of fine powder stream to the laser cladding process. The parameters of laser cladding have been investigated using this experimental equipment. Bronze on aluminum alloy and copper on aluminum alloy were experimented by using defocused beam, powder feeding system, and gas shielding. Good cladding was achieved in the range of beam travel speed of 2.25m/min. In the case of copper/aluminum and bronze/aluminum substrate, the absorption of laser beam was too high to produce low diluted clad. In the case of copper/1050 aluminum, the optimal laser cladding condition was of laser power of 2.8kW, powder feed rate of 0.31g/s and beam travel speed of 2.25m/min. In the case of bronze/aluminum the optimal condition is of laser power of 2.5kW, powder feed rate of 0.31g/s, and beam travel speed of 2.36m/min.

  • The influence of powder size and ball-milling time on the magnetic properties of $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ nanocrystalline alloy powder was investigated. Flake-shaped powders were produced by pulverizing the ribbons annealed at $550^\circC$ for 1 hour. The powders were classified and consolidated into core shapes at a pressure of 18ton/$cm^2$. The initial permeability at 100kHz of the inductor core produced using $53-75\mum$ powders showed the highest value although its consolidated density showed the lowest one. The reason for the result is due to the cracking of the particles larger than $75\mum$ during the consolidation process. The ball-milling of powders for 2-4 hours improved the consolidation density and the initial permeability of the cores. The intrinsic coercivity of the powder decreased as well, resulting from the stress relief of the powder by a short-time milling.
