Deterioration of reinforced concrete structures in corrosive environment is tend to be accelerated due to ingress of aggressive ion such as chloride ion. Chloride-induced corrosion is affected by various factors such as cover concrete qualities, width of existing cracks, and cover depth of concrete. However, the allowable crack width of RC structure in design code does not consider the concrete material properties and conditions of construction except the cover depth. In this paper, an equation for allowable crack width is proposed to consider the cover concrete quality, crack width, and cover depth. Crack width, cover depth, and water-cement ratio of concrete are selected as influencing factors on corrosion of reinforcement for rapid chloride tests. From test results, the relationships between the factors and corrosion are derived. Finally, the equation for allowable crack width is derived in terms of concrete compressive strength and cover depth. The presented equation is verified by comparative calculations with design code variables.

For the design of flexural and shear crack control for reinforced concrete (RC) beams related to serviceability and reparability ensuring, eight simply-supported normal-strength reinforced concrete (NSRC) beam specimens are tested and the existing high-strength reinforced concrete (HSRC) experimental data are included in the investigation of this work. According to the investigation results of flexural and shear cracks, this works modifies the existing design formulas to determine the spacing of the tensile reinforcement for the flexural crack control of a HSRC/NSRC beam design. Additionally, for a specified shear crack width of 0.4 mm, the allowable stresses of the shear reinforcement are also identified. For the serviceability and reparability ensuring of HSRC/NSRC beams, this works proposes the relationship curves between the maximum flexural width and allowable stress of the tensile reinforcement, and the relationship curves between the shear crack width and allowable shear force that can be used to do the crack width control directly.

The deterioration of PC box girder may cause serious effect on the durability of PC structure compared to that of RC structures. In the durability assessment of PC box girder bridges, a quantitive model on crack width is considered as a measure of durability. This study suggests a durability limit state model for PC box girder bridges. This durability limit state model in formulated based on the conventional models on the cracks in concrete. And the allowable crack width is taken as an assumed value established by the design specification or provided by the maintenance authority of the structure.

Inner support regions of continuous steel and concrete composite bridge decks, transverse crackings are easely developed by tensile forces due to live loads and primary and secondary effects of concrete shrinkage. Since these cracks have an influence on the durability of bridge decks, crack width should be controlled within allowable limit values. Although crack width is a function of steel stress, bar diameter, bar spacing, etc, the current code for the amount of longitudinal reinforcements provides only one value of 2 percent of the concrete area. In order to investigate cracking bahaviors of composite girders with the variation of the longitudinal steel ratios, negative flexural tests are conducted on five composite girders and crack width and crack spacing are compared to ACI Code and Eurocode. Based on the test results, it is discussed the suitability of the current code for the longitudinal steel ratio.

This study tests ten full-size simple-supported beam specimens with the high-strength reinforcing steel bars (SD685 and SD785) using the four-point loading. The measured compressive strength of the concrete is in the range of 70-100 MPa. The main variable considered in the study is the shear-span to depth ratio. Based on the experimental data that include maximum shear crack width, residual shear crack width, angle of the main crack and shear drift ratio, a simplified equation are proposed to predict the shear deformation of the high-strength reinforced concrete (HSRC) beam member. Besides the post-earthquake damage assessment, these results can also be used to build the performance-based design for HSRC structures. And using the allowable shear stress at the peak maximum shear crack width of 0.4 and 1.0 mm to suggest the design formulas that can ensure service-ability (long-term loading) and reparability (short-term loading) for shear-critical HSRC beam members.

In this study, for one-way concrete slabs, the flexural strength, deflection, and crack width according to the amount of reinforcing bars were compared for the cases of using steel reinforcing bars and CFRP reinforcing bars. Critical performance dominating the flexural design was investigated and how to design the CFRP-reinforced concrete slab with efficiency was also discussed. It was found that CFRP-reinforced concrete slabs could achieve greater design flexural strength with the same amount of reinforcing bars compared to those using steel rebar, while deflection and crack width were relatively much larger. In concrete slabs using CFRP reinforcing bars, it was confirmed that the maximum crack width acts as a dominant factor in the design. For more efficient flexural design, it is necessary to mitigate the allowable crack width to 0.7 mm and to apply smaller diameter reinforcing bars to control the crack width.
It was difficult to apply conventional excavation methods in some sections from Seoul to Pusan high speed rail road construction of 1 lot 2, due to highway concrete road, gas pipe, water pipe and nearby factories with automatic control system machine. To excavate safely and efficiently in these sections new blast patterns were employed within allowable blast vibration level, by test blast and controlled vibration by sequential blast. Behaviors of the rock mass including convergence and displacement around tunnel were measured with construction works and the crack width in concrete wall was also monitored for controlling allowable limits. The results can be summarized as follow : 1. The allowable blast vibration level in structure site is less 1.0cm/sec for highway concrete, 0.5 cm/sec for gas pipe, water pipe and building housing and 0.3 cm/sec for automatic control system machine. 2. The convergence displacement, single rod extensometer and multi rod extensometer around tunnel and cracks in concrete wall were measured, it was confirmed that the measured values were converged within allowable level. 3. The empirical formular of ground vibrations with 90% confidence lines for PD-3 was given as follow. $$V_{90%}=45.549({\frac{D}{\sqrt{W}}})^{-1.353}$$

Tensile stress occurs and random crack develops in concrete pavement slab when it contracts by variation of temperature and humidity. The tensile stress decreases and the random crack is minimized by sawcutting the slab and inducing the crack with regular spacing. The random crack, joint damage, decrease of load transfer efficiency are caused by too wide joint spacing while too narrow joint spacing leads to increase of construction cost and decrease of comfort. A mechanistic-empirical joint spacing design method for the concrete pavement was developed in this study. Structurally and environmentally weakest sections were found among the sections showing good performance, and design strengths were determined by finite element analysis on the sections. The joint width for which the load transfer efficiency is suddenly lowered was determined as allowable joint with referring to existing research results. The maximum joint spacing for which the maximum tensile stress calculated by the finite element analysis did not exceed the design strength were found. And the maximum joint width expected by the maximum joint spacing were compared to the allowable joint width. The new method developed in this study was applied to two zones of Hamyang-Woolsan Expressway being designed. The same joint spacing as a test section constructed by 8.0m of joint spacing wider than usual was calculated by the design method. Very low cracking measured at 6 years after opening of the test section verified the design method developed in this study.

The PSCB girder bridge is a closed cross-section in which the top and bottom flanges and the web are integrated, and the structural characteristics are generally different from the bridges in which the girder and the floor plate are separated, so a maintenance plan that reflects the characteristics of the PSCB girder bridge is required. As a result of analyzing damage types by collecting detailed safety diagnosis reports of highway PSCB girder bridges, most of the deterioration and damage occurring during use is concentrated on the top flange. In particular, cracks in the bridge direction on the underside of the top flange occurred in about 70 % of the PSCB girder bridges to be analyzed, and these cracks were judged to be caused by indirect loads such as heat of hydration and drying shrinkage rather than structural cracks caused by external loads. In order to improve durability and reduce maintenance costs of PSCB girder bridges in use, it is necessary to control restraint drying shrinkage cracks from the design stage. Therefore, in this paper, the cracks caused by drying shrinkage under restraint, which is the main cause of cracks under the flanges of the top part of the PSCB girder bridge, were directly calculated using the Gilbert Model, and the influencing factors such as the amount of reinforcing bars, diameter and spacing of reinforcing bars were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the crack width caused by restraint drying shrinkage exceeded the allowable crack width of 0.2 mm for reinforcing bars with a reinforcing bar ratio of 0.01 or less based on the H16 reinforcing bar and a reinforcing bar with a diameter greater than H19 based on the reinforcing bar ratio of 0.01. Finally, based on the results of the crack width review, a method for controlling the crack width of the top flange of the PSCB girder bridge was proposed.

In this study, a series of items on the safety and stability of cracked main structure in subway are investigated and analyzed. Cracks due to dry contraction under the construction can be found when a tensile stress of cross section is higher than tensile strength at a value of coefficient of dry contraction $200{\times}10^{-6}$. It is concluded that there is no problems when load carrying capacity, that is, an ability of resisting loads of structure is enough in this analytical model. Also, it is concluded that this model has a desirable serviceability because a width of bending crack is lower than allowable one.
