This study investigated the current status and characteristics of strategic alliances attempted by domestic internet businesses. Specifically, this study surveyed competitive environmental characteristics of partner companies involved, alliance period, types of partner companies, motives of alliances, types of alliances, success and failure factors and satisfaction toward the alliances. Major findings were: first, alliances between portal companies and content producers; portal companies and internet services; e-commercial sites and internet services were the most frequent partnerships engaged. Second, the most important motive for and type of the strategic alliance were: 'the commercialization and marketing of new product' and 'joint distribution and marketing agreement' respectively. Third, the most important factor for the successful alliance was 'a close examination of partners' core business value and competence'; and the factor most hindering the successful alliance was 'a discrepancy on capabilities of partners' core personnel. Finally types of internet business were significantly related to perceived satisfaction toward strategic alliance.
This paper identifies the productivity in the Global Air Transport Industry for the period of 1995-2001 by testing the Total Factor Productivity with tonqvist method. Based on panel data from 20 major international airline corporations which formed global strategic alliances, we find alliances make a considerably significant contribution to productivity increases. We also find that total factor productivity rate changed surprisingly in Air Transport Industry between pre- and post-Asian financial crisis period.
This study explores how strategic alliance activities are evolving and the factors that impact on the formation and development of airline alliances. Findings show the initiation of regional and more liberalized bilateral, or open skies, agreements have removed some of the impediments to structural changes in international aviation. Airlines in more liberal markets enter into greater numbers and more integrative forms of alliances. Also, airlines, on average, achieve better results of operation if the market is more liberal. Essentially, there is a positive relationship between the developments of alliances and the liberalization of air transport markets. It has been questioned that the US bilateral open skies agreements provide its carriers more access to the global market and countries that do not enter into such agreements with the US risk a loss of traffic. Consequently, open skies agreements may enable carriers who have the freedom to exercise market power to be dominant in the markets. This suggests that regulatory coordination and liberalization of international aviation reinforce each other and should therefore be pursued simultaneously.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the technical and cost efficiency of Air Transport Industry on Global strategic alliances. In particular, this study develops Stochastic Frontier Approach for accurate judgement. Based on 20 major international airline corporations related with strategic alliances during the period 1995-2001, we find that alliances make a significant contribution to efficiency. On the other hand, it is found that the level of contribution to efficiency is different according to alliances. These results also changed greatly between pre- and post- Asian financial crisis period.
The purpose of this study is to identify the major determinants of performance of the R&D alliances, with an aim toward raising the success rate in cooperative relationships. In particular, this study assesses whether the success factors of purchasing relationship identified in the literature apply equally to SMEs in Korea. The results of this study indicate that inter-firm cooperation, experienced cooperation, and efficiency of government support have positive impacts on the purchase rate of new products. On the other hand, R&D intensity and resources of competencies of the firm do not influence it. Additionally, market attractiveness does not moderate the effects of the five independent variables on the purchase. The extracted determinants according to the results of surveys give valuable and practical hints to the SMEs when they make a decision on their R&D alliances with large enterprises.
This paper investigates two kinds of strategic combinations carried out by the European telecom operators between 1986 and 2001: acquisitions, on the one hand, and strategic alliances, on the other. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, it analyzes the behavior adopted by these companies to adapt to an environment that, after the processes of globalization and privatization presents a clearly different structure. Second, it focuses on the effect that internationalization and diversification could exert over the returns obtained by the European telecom firms involved in acquisitions and alliances, differentiating when such strategic combinations are more profitable for the shareholders of the firms that carry them out.
Purpose - Alliance members have constantly revised market strategies over time by withdrawing membership from a current alliance, joining another alliance, or constructing a new alliance. From the perspective of the signaling effect, the purpose of this study is to analyze the impacts of partner volatility (new member, old member, and new group) on firm value. Design/methodology - To analyze the impact of partner volatility on firm value, companies in strategic alliances are classified into the three groups of new partner, existing partner, and new alliance, and the effects on company value are verified through an event study and the signaling effect analysis. Findings - This study proved that new partners and newly formed strategic alliances have higher expectation effects than old partner company groups, and have a more positive effect on the relevant firms' stock prices. In addition, the result of the study showed the same valid results as the alliance levels, and showed that investors' expectations were higher with new partners and new alliances than with old partners. Research Implications - A new perspective on the signaling effects of strategic alliances among shipping lines was presented in this study by grouping alliance types including new member, old member, and new group. The results provide useful insights for selecting partners and firm values of alliance announcement times. Originality/value - This study analyzed partner volatility on relevant companies' stock prices from the perspective of investors from the global shipping conference reorganization in 2017. Strategic alliances were classified into the three categories of new partner, old partner, and new alliance, and the effects on firm value were verified.
