  • An optical switch/modulator is designed and the light propagating characteristics is analyzed by the simplified BPM. The distinctive feature of the switch/modulator is that all the waveguide branches are designed to be single-mode. Principle of the device is based on the coupled mode theory in the Y-junction interconnecting waveguide. In spite of all the waveguides are designed to be single-mode, adjusting the interconnecting waveguide length of the device, the same characteristics as existing device up to date is obtainable. Numerical results show that the switching characteristics periodically depends on the interconnecting waveguide length with a spatial of about 150${\mu}m$ in the Ti:LiNbO3 step index waveguide. The concept of design would be utilized effectively in fabricating the monolithic high density of optical integrated circuit.

  • In this paper, an optical switching circuit and several types of all-optical transmitter/receiver circuits which are configured with photodiodes, multiple quantum-well(MQW) optical modulators, and field-effect transistors(FETs) were simulated using PSPICE and their results of these are examined and discussed. 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ ${\times}$ 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ of window size was used for the optical modulators and 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$ wide FETs with the transconductance value of 55 mS/mm were used for the simulations. Simulation results clearly show that in order for the high speed operation of the all-optical circuits, the size of each device should be minimized to reduce the parasitic capacitance, the circuits should be designed to operate at the wavelength where the resposivity of photodiodes becomes the maximum peak, and the use of short, high-intensity input optical signal beams is very advantageous.

  • The performance of two types of surface reflecting all-optical switches with InGaAs/InAlAs multiple quantum wells are investigated. The absorption spectra and the refractive index changes of the quantum well are calculated for various pump and probe beam intensities and device conditions. From theses results, on ON/OFF ratio and switching speed of the two switches are compared. It is shown that the switch using DBR has higher ON/OFF ratio and higher switching speed than the switch without DBR.

  • In this paper, the effects of filter parameters on a supercontinuum-based all-optical thresholder are experimentally investigated. By tuning the filter parameters, the power transfer function and power transmission function are tailored. The experimental results show that a thresholder with short center wavelength has a better power function, and the slope in the middle level of the thresholder increases with increasing bandwidth. Through tuning the filter parameters, the thresholder can achieve a steplike power transfer function for optical thresholding, and a steplike power transmission function for optical self-switching. This makes the supercontinuum-based thresholder more flexible, and allows customization of performance to meet different demands in various applications.

  • In this paper, service differentiation scheme using optical buffer that is reduced in size with slow-light technology in optical burst switching networks is presented. In suggested scheme, each outport has buffer to store high-class burst only in case that all its wavelengths are occupied. When all wavelengths are being used, a new arriving high-class burst goes into the buffer and waits until a burst is serviced. As soon as a burst is serviced with a wavelength, the high-class burst at buffer is allocated to the free wavelength. In case that low-class burst is arriving under the same situation, it is not stored at the buffer but discarded. An analytical model is derived to analyze the performance of the suggested scheme and compare its performance with the conventional scheme such as preemption and deflection as well as no service differentiations.

  • In this paper, we carry out the simulation for an optimal solution of one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal structure using Genetic algorithm, and show the proposed method to apply for photonic transistors. Unlike a conventional steepest descent method for an optimization, the proposed method based on Genetic Algorithm has advantages for finding out excellent solutions without any analytic forms, which can easily apply to other applications. Also, as several solutions around global minimum solution can be obtained, it is very good optimization tool to give us the patterns about the optimal structure of a photonic crystal transistor. To design an all-optical filter transistor, Neural network algorithm is firstly performed for an initial design and then Genetic Algorithm is finally used to get the optimal solution. From the simulation of one-dimensional photonic crystal transistor, 27dB of the switching On/Off ratio is obtained.

  • This paper analyzes and compares the blocking performance of all-optical wavelength-routed networks providing circuit switching among users. A connection between two nodes along a particular path must use a single wavelength on all hops, or links, within the path. We then calculate the blocking probability along a lightpath with wavelength conversion in a network with an arbitrary topology and show the network performance improvement offered by node with limited translation technology. We also propose a new schematic method for the performance analysis of different types of network architecture which is composed of nodes with or without wavelength conversion(NC, FC or LC).

  • A water soluble spironaphthoxazine (SPO) was synthesized, and its spectral properties were determined. Under UV irradiation, colorless SPO shows intensive blue color while the intensity of its initial fluorescence decreased. In addition, SPO also exhibited high sensitivity to pH stimuli both in colorimetry and fluorometry distinguishing from the spectral appearance observed under UV irradiation. Further, integrating these two optical characteristics a three-state switching system can be established, and all interconversions can be observed by naked-eye.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic chracteristics of reflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using wide viewing angle LC mode, fringe field switching(FFS). Unlike other reflective LCD modes, in the FFS mode, the LC director in plance so an application to reflective display consisted of polarizer, LC layer and reflector is possible. when an incident light is 550mm, the optimal cell retardation value is 0.1365${\mu}$m and the efficiency of reflectivity is high over 90% with very little wavelength dispersion. Further, we have studied a new reflective display with polarizer, optical compensation film with half plate, LC plus reflector. The display with optimized cell parameters shows high contrast ratio (CR) over 130 with high light efficiency over 90% at normal direction and the CR greater than 5 exists over 60$^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions.
