  • Various approaches have been attempted to develop recycling technologies related to industrial waste resources containing metals. Among them, glass is not decomposed into microorganisms, so landfill is not suitable, and interest in the recycling of waste glass is increasing. In this paper, by incorporating chelate resin to suppress the elution of heavy metals in waste glass and using waste glass as a fine aggregate and we want to evaluate the strength, drying shrinkage, alkali-silica reaction and heavy metal leaching of shielded filler materials and to provide basic data for utilizing waste glass as an economical and environmentally friendly shielding filler. As a result of the test, it was found that the use of waste glass as a fine aggregate was effective in the development of strength, but the incorporation of chelate resin had an influence on the strength development. In addition, the addition of chelate resin was effective in improving drying shrinkage but it was found to affect the alkali - silica reaction. As a result of the heavy metal leaching test, the KSLP test method satisfies all the criteria for heavy metal leaching. However, in case of lead, the limit of US ANSI 67-2007a was exceeded and further study should be done.

  • Texturing for crystalline silicon solar cells is one of the important techniques to increase conversion efficiency by effective photon trapping. Generally, incoming wafers or alkali etched wafers are used for texturing. From this conventional etching process, $7{\sim}10{\mu}m$-sized random pyramids are formed. In this study, acid etching for removal of saw damages was practiced before texturing. This improved the resulting surface morphology, which consisted of $2{\sim}4{\mu}m$-sized pyramids. Because these pyramids covered the surface much more extensively, we obtained reduction of optical losses on the surface. In order to compare with conventional texturing, FE-SEM is used for observing surface morphology and reflectance data is analyzed by UV-VIS spectrophotometer.

  • This paper investigated the synthesis conditions of nano-sized $TiO_2$ powder in a hydrothermal process at a temperature range of $100{\sim}180^{\circ}C$ considering the precipitation agent, precipitation pH, reaction temperature and time. Titanium hydroxide formed by $NH_4OH$ exhibited a lower crystallization temperature than that by NaOH and formed less aggregated $TiO_2$ particles. As the precipitation pH increased above 8, the shape of the particles changed from spherical to needle form, which appeared to be caused by dissolution and re-precipitation of the titanium hydroxide in an alkali environment.

  • Aluminosilicate inorganic polymer binder has been studied as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement due to its higher physical properties, chemical resistance and thermal resistance. This study has been carried out in an attempt to understand the hardening characteristics of aluminosilicate binder by varying the content of calcium. Samples with four different ratios of Al, Si, and Ca were synthesized in this study with the Al:Si:Ca mol ratio being 1.00:1.85~1.98:0.29~2.12. Furthermore, an alkali silicate solution was prepared with the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (NaSi). The hardening characteristics of the specimens were analyzed using XRD, SEM, and TG/DTA. In addition, compressive strength and sintering time of specimens were measured as a function of calcium content. The results showed that the specimen containing 2.12 mol% calcium offered the highest compressive strength. However, the compressive strength of the specimen containing 0.26 mol% calcium was lower relative to the other specimens. The results displayed a distinct tendency that as more calcium was added to the inorganic polymer, setting time became shorter. When calcium was added to the inorganic polymer structure, a second phase was not formed, indicating that the addition of calcium does not affect the crystalline structure.

  • The surface morphology and the surface roughness of n-type SiC induced by wet-treatment using 45% KOH and buffered oxide etchant (BOE-1HF : $6H_2O$) were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). While Si-face of SiC could be etched by alkali solutions such as KOH, acidic solutions such as BOE were hardly able to etch SiC. When the rough SiC samples were used, the surface roughness of etched sample was decreased after wet-treatment regardless of etchant, due to the planarization the of surface by widening of scratches formed by mechanical polishing. It was observed that the initial etching was affected by the energetically unstable sites, such as dangling bond and steps. However, when a relatively smooth sample was used, the surface roughness was rapidly increased after treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr and at room temperature for 4 hr by using KOH solution, resulting from the nano-sized structures such as pores and bumps. This indicates that porous SiC surface can be achieved by using purely chemical treatment.

  • Research into the replacement of injured systems and tissue in the human body is advancing rapidly. Recently, Ti-Ni shape memory alloys have shown excellent biofunctionality related to their shape memory effect and superelasticity. In this study, the effect of an acid or an alkali treatment on the bioactivity in 49Ti-Ni and 51.5Ti-48.5Ni alloys is investigated in an effort to utilize Ti-Ni alloy as a biomaterial. In addition, the biocompatibility in a SBF solution is assessed through in vitro testing. A porous surface was formed on the surface of both alloys after a chemical treatment. According to the in vitro test, apatite formed on the surfaces of both alloys. The forming rate of apatite in the Ti-rich alloy was faster that in the Ni-rich alloy. The formation of apatite provided proof of the bioactivity of the Ti-Ni alloy. A small quantity of Ni was eluted at the initial stage, whereas Ni was not found for 12 days in the Ti-rich alloy and for 8 days in the Ni-rich alloy. In the case of the treated 51.5Ti-Ni alloy, the shape memory property was worsened but the biocompatibility was improved.

  • Our study was performed to evaluate the effect of leaching parameters including the physicochemical characteristics and the fractionated composition of heavy metals on the release of heavy metals in fly ash discharged from MSWI. Leaching parameters such as pH, CEC, particle size, and exchangeable fraction among the fractional composition classified by sequential extraction procedure are considered. The leaching rate of heavy metal released by KSLT method is largely dependent on the pH of fly ash. The effect of pH on the release of heavy metals is different from elements. It appears that the leaching rate of cadmium and copper decreases with increasing pH, while lead and zinc increases at the condition of neutral or strong alkali condition, which suggests that the leaching of heavy metals are limited by the solubility. It is found that the effect of CEC is similarly to that of pH, $D_{10}$ among the particle size of fly ash is negative correlated with the concentration of heavy metals leached by KSLT method. In the case of exchangeable fraction, the leaching rate of heavy metals is linearly correlated with the exchangeable fraction for the fly ash below 40 meq/l00g of CEC, but not related out of the range.

  • The major constituents in spent FCC catalysts are Si, Al, Fe, Ti, alkali metals and some others. The spent catalyst is also composed small amounts of rare metals such as Ce, Nd, Ni and V. The selective adsorption and concentration of Ce and Nd from the leaching solution of spent FCC catalysts with sulfuric acid($0.25mol/dm^3$) were carried out by the column method with a chelate resin having a functional group of aminophosphoric acid type. Ce and Nd were separated from eluate liquor containing Al, Nd and V by the precipitation process with oxalic acid. Vanadium is purified from chloride ion coexistance by solvent extraction, employing tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide as extractant with Al in the raffinate solution. Rare metals with the purity of 99 percent were obtained from the spent FCC catalyst.

  • Objective: This study examines the types of hazardous factors in the working environment and the time-trend for their exposure levels over 10 years (2007 to 2016). Study Design and Method: The types of hazardous factors and exposure levels were drawn from the 19 measurement reports on the working environment over 10 years at a shock absorber manufacturing facility. Risk assessment of the types of factors and time-trend of exposure levels were evaluated using the factors and exposure levels. Results: A total of 34 hazardous factors were evaluated. The types were noise, 15 organic compounds, seven kinds of acid sand alkalis, eight kinds of heavy metals, and three other compounds. Special management materials used were nickel, hexavalent chrome, and sulfuric acid. Human carcinogens (1A) used were trichloroethylene, nickel, and sulfuric acid. There were six types of substances belonging to the IARC's 2B (body carcinogens) classification or higher, including, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl benzene, and trichloroethylene. No detection was found for 627 out of the 2065 total measurements in 19 exposure survey reports, representing 30.4%. Organic solvents, acid and alkali products, and heavy metals showed continuous low exposure concentrations. Noise, welding fumes, and the evaluation of mixed solvents show a gradual decrease in geometric mean and maximum over the time-trend of 10 years. Conclusions: In the case of a shock absorber manufacturing facility, the hazardous factors of noise and the evaluation of mixed solvents still indicate high concentrations exceeding the exposure limits and necessitate reduction studies. These two factors and welding fumes showed a continuous decrease in their ten-year tendency. Organic compounds, acids/alkalis, and heavy metals were managed smoothly in a work environment of continuous low concentrations.

  • This study investigated the effect of alkaline activators - NaOHaq (NH) (NH: 0-16 M) and Na2SiO3aq (NS) (NS/NH: 0-3.5) in the synthesis of silico-manganese fume (SMF) and ground blast furnace slag (BFS) blended alkali-activated mortar (AASB). The use of individual activator was ineffective in producing AASB of sufficient fresh and hardened properties, compared to the synergy of both activators. This may be attributed to incomplete dissolution and condensation of oligomers required for gelation of the binder. An inverse relationship was noted among the fresh properties and the NH concentration or NS/NH ratio. This was influenced by the dissolution and condensation of silicate monomers under polymerization process. The maximum 28-day strength of ~45 MPa, setting time of 60 min and flow of 182 mm was obtained with the use of combined activators (10M-NH and NS/NH=2.5). The combined activators at NS/10M-NH=2.5 constituted SiO2/Na2O, H2O/Na2O and H2O/SiO2 molar ratio of 1.61, 17.33 and 10.77, respectively. This facilitated the formation of C-S-H, C/K-A-S-H and C-Mn-S-H in the framework together with an increase in the crystallinity due to more silicate re-organization within the aluminosilicate chain. On comparison of the high concentrated with mild alkali synthesized product, it revealed that the concentration of OH- and Si monomers together with alkali metals influenced the dissolution of precursors and embedment of the constituent elements in the polymeric matrix. These factors eventually contributed to the microstructural densification of the mortar prepared with NS/10M-NH=2.5 thereby enhancing the compressive strength.
