It is possible for concrete using sea sand to contain chloride ion as well as cation such as Na$^{+}$and $K^{+}$ during mixing process. It is known that some cations such as Na$^{+}$and $K^{+}$ remain in pore solution without binding In this study, therefore, we intend to inspect the behavior of cations in cement paste as well as NaCl, CaCl$_2$ and KCI through analysis of pore solution extracted from cement paste with high pressure vessel. As a result, increase of alkali ions by adding sea sand and admixtures to the fresh concrete means use of the cement contained high alkali contents. In this case, alkali ions in pore solution can decrease durability of cement products causing alkali-aggregate reaction or accelerated carbonation. So it needs to be studied.studied.
The thermoelectric characteristics of alkali activated slag composites containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was investigated in the present study. Three different MWCNT contents and exposed temperatures were considered, and their thermoelectric-related properties and internal structures were analyzed. It was found that the alkali activated slag composite with MWCNT 2.0 wt.% and the exposed temperature of 150℃ were the optimal condition to obtain the highest Seebeck coefficient and power factor. Based on the feasibility study, the extended size thermoelectric module with 130 elements was fabricated, and tested the electricity production capacity. Consequently, the present thermoelectric module produced 30.83 ㎼ of electricity at ∆T=178.4℃.
In this study, bast fibers, woody parts and whole woods were pulped separately by alkali, alkali-hydrogen peroxide and sulfomethylated processes and their papermaking characteristics for the special Hanji were evaluated. Also properties of new Hanji products obtained from mixed stocks of various ratios were discussed. Solfomethylated pulps were shown higher brightness and sheet strengths than those from alkali and alkali-peroxide pulps. On the mechanical properties of Hanjis mixed with bast-and woody-parts pulps, and with bast and whole stem pulps, handsheet strengths were decreased with the increasing contents of woody and whole stem pulps. Various Hanjis could make by various mixing of separated cooked Pulps. Especially an excellant Hwaseonji(calligrapy Paper) could be made by one stage cooking of whole stem of paper mulberry by sulfomethylated pulping method.
In order to investigate the ability of log wood for oak mushroom production as a source of an alternative energy, both chemical and physical characteristics of log wood were investigated according to the cultivation periods. Also, both chemical and physical characteristics of material that treated by steam explosion were investigated to confirm the pretreatment effect by remaining enzyme as a control. The contents of ash, water-, alkali- and organic soluble extracts have been increased after the inoculation. It appeard that holocellulose contents substantially decreased and the contents of lignin as another main component of wood remained constant after the inoculation. However this result implied that indeed, a sufficient amount of lignin has been degraded paritially by enzymes of oak mushroom Lentinus edodes if we consider that the amount of holocelulose was substantially reduced. It also indicated that the degree of degradation gradually progressed but crystallinity decreased after the inoculation. The contents of water-, alkali- and organic soluble extracts have been increased by steam explosion. Holocellulose contents increased within narrow limits and lignin contents remained constant. However the contents of holocellulose and lignin have been decreased by steam explosion, considering that the amount of other extractives was relatively increased. The degree of crystallinity and lignin contents reduction by steam explosion was almost similar to the result obtained by increasing cultivation periods. According to the results, log woods for mushroom production have a potential as material for developing alternative energy.

To use bamboo in the pulp industry, the anatomical characteristics of 60-day-old, 1-year-old, 2-year-old, and 3-year-old moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel), and the characteristics of fiber and sheet of alkali pulp made of moso bamboo were investigated. Moso bamboo is composed of metaxylens and parenchyma cells in the inner part of the wall, and thick-walled small bundle sheathes near the outer walls. Moso bamboo showed the heterogeneity in anatomical structure. The longest fibers were shown in the middle part, and the widest width in the inner part. The lignin contents were 14.4% in 60-day-old bamboo, which was not lignified yet. The lignin contents in bamboo above 1 year were approximately 35%. The yields of alkali pulp of moso bamboo were in the range between 41 and 47%, and the yields tend to decrease with the increase of ages. The lignin contents of 60-day-old bamboo were 2.1% and those of bamboo above 1 year showed approximately 4% to 5% increment. The length, width, and curl index of fiber in alkali pulp appeared to be similar in all ages. However, coarseness increased slightly with the increase of bamboo ages. The distribution of long fiber was shown much in 60-year-old bamboo. The optical and mechanical properties of moso bamboo tended to decrease with the increase of bamboo age.

Blast Furnace Slag is good for enhancing the qualities of concrete such as reducing hydration heat increasing fluidity, long-term strength and durability, but it has some problems: construction time is increased or the rotation rate of form is decreased due to low development of early strength. In this study, an aqueous alkali solution for alkali activated reaction was obtained by the electrolysis using concentrated water discharged from seawater desalination process. Prepared aqueous alkali solution was applied to produce mortars using blast furnace slag. The results can be summarized as follows : For the mortar, compressive strength was decreased below 2% of NaOH and increased below 6% of NaOH. And compressive strength was increased gradually with increasing NaOCl contents. However, NaCl contents of mortars caused a decrease of 28days strength above early strength.
Incorporation of wastes glass aggregate in mortar may cause crack and this may result in the strength reduction due to alkali-silica reaction(ASR) and expansion. The purposes of this study were to investigate the properties of alkali-silica expansion and strength loss through a series of experiments which had a main experimental variables such as waste glass aggregate contents, glass colors, fiber types, and fiber contents. The steel fibers and polypropylene fibers were used for constraining the ASR expansion and mortar cracking. From the result, green waste glass was more suitable than brown one because of low expansion. And in this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum content can not be found. Also, when used the fibers with waste glass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. Specially, adding 1.5 vol.% of steel fiber to 20% of waste glass, the expansion ratio was reduced by 40% and flexural strength was developed by up to 110% comparing with only waste glass(80$\^{C}$ H$_2$O curing).

The effects of the alkali surface modification process on the adhesion strength between electroless-plated Cu and polyimide films were investigated. The polyimide surfaces were effectively modified by alkali surface treatments from the hydrophobic to the hydrophilic states, and it was confirmed by the results of the contact angle measurement. The surface roughness increased by alkali surface treatments and the adhesion strength was proportional to the surface roughness. The adhesion strength of Cu/polyimide interface treated by KOH + EDA (Ethylenediamine) was 874 gf/cm which is better than that treated by KOH and KOH + $KMnO_4$. The results of XPS spectra revealed that the alkali treatment formed oxygen functional groups such as carboxyl and amide groups on the polyimide films which is closely related to the interfacial bonding mechanism between electroless-plated Cu and polyimide films. It could be suggested that the species and contents of functional group on polyimide films, surface roughness and contact angle were related with the adhesion strength of Cu/polyimide in combination.

An experiment was made to investigate the effect of acid and alkali treatments obfserving the amount of nutrients especially calcium(Ca), phosphorus(P), ${\alpha}$-amino nitrogen(${\alpha}$-amino N), and total nitrogen(total-N)which were extracted from beef bone. 0~0.8% acetic acid and 0~0.5% sodium bicarbonate were used for treatment on different levels. The results are as follows; In case of acid treatment, Ca and P contents in bone stock wer observed to increase significantly according to acid concentration. Ca and P contents in bone stock highly incrased especially when the acid concentration was above 0.3%. Ca and P ratio varied from one to two when the acid concentration was below 0.01%. However contents of ${\alpha}$-amino N and total-N increased significantly when acid concentration was above 0.5%. In case of alkali treatment, contents of Ca and P did not increased significantly on all levels of sodium bicarbonate. The content of ${\alpha}$-amino N, however, increased significantly when the alkali concentration was in 0.05% but total-N did not show any variation in amount. These results suggest that acid treatment can give rise to an increase of the amount of nutrients which are extracted from beef bone but alkali treatment does not.

The ratio of saccharification and formation of furans during the acid hydrolysis of agar with oxalic acid and sulfuric acid were examined base on the contents of the agar and acids. The ratio of saccharification in oxalic acid appeared to be 51~59% somewhat higher than 49~61% of sulfuric acid. Formation of the furans during the acid hydrolysis increased proportional to the contents of agar and acid. The relative formation ratio was high 10~47% for furfural (FUR) and 15~29% for hydroxy-methyl furfural (HMF) in 0.5~1.25% sulfuric acid rather than those of oxalic acid. When comparing the removal efficiency of the furans using an alkali treatment, steam stripping and hydrophobic resins, FUR was eliminated 60% by the alkali treatment, 62~90% by steam stripping and 71~75% by Amberlite XAD4 and 7HP, while HMF was removed to low levels of 10.5%, 4~17% and 13~25%, respectively. The loss of reducing sugar was also observed in process of the removal of furans, and the loss rate was the level of 2~4% in alkali treatment, 11~16% in steam stripping and 7~9% in Amberlite resins.
