In this work, we fabricated a gas-sensing device based on porous silicon(PS), and its C-V properties were investigated for sensing alcohol vapor. The structure of the sensor consists of thin Au/oxidized PS/PS/P-Si/Al, where the p-Si is etched anisotropically to be prepared into a membrane-shape. We used alcohol gases vaporized from different alcohol (or ethanol) solutions mixed with pure water at 36$^{\circ}C$, similarly with an alcohol breath measurement to check drunk driving. As the result, I-V curves showed typical tunneling property, and C-V curves were shaped like those of a MIS (metal-insulator-semiconductor) capacitor, where the capacitance in accumulation was increased with alcohol vapor concentration.
Capacitance-type alcohol gas sensors using porous silicon (PS) layer as sensitive film were fabricated to measure low alcohol gas concentration. Though sensors using porous silicon layer have show high sensitivity by large internal surface area, there is still much room for improvement to measure low breath alcohol concentration especially at room temperature. In this work, to discuss the response properties against exposure to organic vapor for breath alcohol measurements on the basis of experimental results. we measured the variation of the capacitance for the range of 0 to 0.5% alcohol concentration, and observed the improvement of sensitivity by illumination of UV light. In addition, the effect of CO2 and N2 gases involved commonly in exhaling breath was estimated, and the same procedure against methanol vapor was executed to compare qualitatively with the capacitance characteristics by alcohol vapor.
High water vapor permeable coating materials were prepared by blending aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution with waterborne polyurethane-urea (WBPU) dispersions synthesized by prepolymer mixing process. Stable WBPU/PVA dispersions were achieved at PVA content below 30 wt%. As the water soluble polymer PVA content increased, the number and density of total micro-pores (tunnel-like/isolated micro-pores) formed after the dissolution of PVA in water increased, and the water vapor permeability of coated Nylon fabric also increased significantly. Using WBPU/water soluble polymer PVA blends as a coating material and then dissolving PVA in water was confirmed to be an effective method to obtain prominent breathable fabrics.
Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations were performed to calculate the vapor-liquid coexistence properties for the binary mixtures $CO_2/CH_3OH$, $CO_2/C_2H_5OH$, and $CO_2/CH_3CH_2CH_2OH.$ The configurational bias Monte Carlo method was used in the simulation of alcohol. Density of the mixture, composition of the mixture, the pressure-composition diagram, and the radial distribution function were calculated at vapor-liquid equilibrium. The composition and the density of both vapor and liquid from simulation agree considerably well with the experimental values over a wide range of pressures. The radial distribution functions in the liquid mixtures show that $CO_2$ molecules interact more stogly with methyl group than methylene group of $C_2H_5OH$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_2OH$ due to the steric effects of the alcohol molecules.
We fabricated several composite membranes with selectively permeable performance designed to facilitate water vapor transport and resist DMMP vapor permeation. Materials for selective permeable membrane were based on polyvinyl alcohol and functional polymer containing basic functional group. With these materials, we characterized selectively permeable performance to identify next-generation material with chemical-biological protective capability. Results showed that polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) materials possessed performance with superior water vapor permeation ($2,200{\sim}2,900g/m^2/day$) and protective capability against DMMP vapor ($47g/m^2/day$).
In this work, we fabricated a gas-sensing device based on porous silicon(PS), and its I-V and C-V properties were investigated for sensing alcohol vapor. The structure of the sensor consists of thin Au/Oxidized porous silicon/porous silicon/Silicon/Al, where the silicon substrate is etched anisotropically to be prepared into a membrane shape. As the result, I-V curves showed typical tunneling property, and C-V curves were shaped like those of a MIS (metal-insulator- semiconductor) capacitor, where the capacitance in accumulation was increased with alcohol vapor concentration.
Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the effects of alcohol on phase separation of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/tetrahydrofuran (THF)/alcohol (9/61/30 wt%) solution during water vapor induced phase separation. A typical scattering pattern of nucleation & growth (NG) was observed for all casting solutions of CPVC/THF/alcohol. In the case of the phase separation of CPVC dope solution containing 30 wt% ethanol or n-propanol, the demixing with NG was observed to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, the phase separation of CPVC dope solution with 30 wt% n-butanol was found to be predominantly homogeneous NG. Although the different phase separation behavior of NG was observed with types of alcohol additives, the resultant surface morphology had no remarkable differences. That is, even though the NG process by water vapor is either homogeneous or heterogeneous, this difference does not play a main role on the final surface morphology. However, it was estimated from the result of hydraulic flux that the phase separation by homogeneous NG provided the membrane geometry with lower resistance in comparison with that by heterogeneous one.

We suggest CNT-based gas sensors for breath alcohol measurement. The sensors were composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) thin film on glass substrate with simple process, and the SWNTs thin film as sensing layer was formed by multiple spray-coating with SWNT composites which was well-dispersed, highly controlled and differently functionalized by various binders (TEOS, MTMS, and VTMS) added in ethanol solvent. In this work, three different SWNTs thin films were made to compare their electrical response properties for alcohol vapor. From fabricated sensors, conductance responses were measured and discussed. In the result, our alcohol gas sensors showed an effective selectivity even at room temperature.

The vapor phase hydrogen trancefer reaction between acrolein and isopropyl alcohol has been investigated over $Ag_2O$-Cao catalyst. A high selectivity of allyl alcohol was obtained at 88.7% with conversion of 75.4%.
In this study, 3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesulfonic acid (THS-PSA) was added to poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA_MA) to improve the separation characteristics toward water vapors in the air. The prepared membranes varying both PSSA_MA and THS-PSA amounts were also synthesized at different cross linking temperatures. Then, in order to investigate the separation characteristics of the resulting membranes, the dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) and vapor permeation experiments were carried out. The increase of cross-linking temperature showed longer time to reach the equilibrium sorption state from the dynamic vapor sorption experiments. PVA/PSSA_MA (3%)/THA-PSA(7%) prepared at $120^{\circ}C$ gave the highest permeability of 480 barrer at $35^{\circ}C$.
