  • The author observed the effects of the cobalt-60 irradiation on the amelogenesis and dentinogenesis of the albino rat fetuses by means of histological and histochemical methods. Females in oestrus were mated overnight and examined the next morning for evidence of copulation. The lower left abdomen of mothers were exposed to cobalt-60 irradiation on the 10th day of gestation, l00R 200R and 300R respectively. The fetuses were removed from the mothers on the 18th day of gestation. The employed histochemical methods were PAS reaction, colloidal iron reaction, aldehyde fuchsin stain, α-amino acid reaction, -SH radical reaction and methyl- green pyronin stain. The results were as follows; 1. The group irradiated by l00R made no histological differences in comparison with the control group. 2. Increasing the irradiation to 200R, abnormal dentin formation occured, and resulted in enamel hypoplasia and in atrophy and necrosis of odontoblasts. In dentinal papilla, the dilation and the degeneration of the blood vessels, excessive reticular atrophy and osteodentin were revealed. 3. With the more irradiation (200R-300R), the positive material of PAS, α-amino acid and aldehyde fuchsin tended to decrease in the ameloblast and the odontoblast. No significant changes appeared in DNA, the stainability of methylgreen pyronin.

  • Attempts have been made upon the temperature response of the rat induced by some central nervous system depressants as well as stimulants, so as to secure some hidden facets of Panax Ginseng acting upon central nervous system. Although considerable works have been done with regard to Panax Ginseng, it is quite apparent that neither definite implication in terms of its effective chemical constituents is with us nor its pharmacological activity thus far. The author could, however, arrive at some results through procedures preceded by intraperitoneal administration of various drugs in combination with Panax Ginseng in albino rats, that is: (1) Nembutal and chlorpromazine displayed a highly inhibitory effect upon temperature response in the presence of Panax Ginseng, while meprobamate, reserpine, phenacetin and aspirin exerted potentiation actions upon hypothermia. Phenobarbital, serotonin and histamine, on the contrary, did not appear to produce any effect of significance. (2) Nembutal with Panax Ginseng caused prolongation of hypnosis in rat, whereas sodium phenobarbital did not have any effect on it. (3) $LD_{-50}$ in each experimental group of administration of central nervous system stimulants such as strychnine, picrotoxin with Panax Ginseng, necessitated marked increase in the lethal doses. The observations from this study seemed to imply that the complicated mechanism of action of Panax Ginseng might be referred to both central nervous depressive action and influence to basal metabolic rate of mammalian.

  • The present experiment was intended to determine the effect of pollen load on chloroform-induced hepatic and renal damage in albino rats. The subjects were administered with the graded concentration of chloroform and an additional amount of pollen load to some groups, and the result of which was: 1. Fatty changes and necrosis in liver and kidneys of the experimental group became more severe according to the chloroform concentration. 2. The tissue damage decreased in the pollen-treated groups. But the higher the concentration of chloroform administered with pollen is, the less the damaged tissue is rehabilitated.

  • The pharmacological interest coupled with traditional uses (antidiarrhoeal, antiseptic, analgesic etc) prompted us to test for anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and diuretic activitities of Trema (T.) orientalis Linn. The crude methanolic leaves extract of T. orientalis was investigated for its possible anti-inflammatory activities using carrageenin induced rat paw edema model and cotton pellet implantation method in mice. Then the extract analyzed for its antinociceptive activities by acetic acid induced writhing model in mice. The extract possessed significant anti-inflammatory activity in both models at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight of mice. Moreover, the extract showed significantly reduced the number of acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction in mice of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight. The extract also showed positive diuretic activity in albino mice.

  • It has been known that the ginseng extracts activate the lipid metabolism in animal body. The experiments were undertaken to elucidate the effects of total, diol, and trial saponin of ginseng on the activities of acyl Co-A synthetase and hydroxyacyl Co-A dehydrogenase involved in fatty acid metabolism in normal albino rat liver. The acyl Co-A synthetase activity, in vitro, was increased by 20% with treatment of 2.5${\times}$10-3% total saponin, by 14% with 2.5${\times}$10-3% diol saponin, arid 30% with 2.5${\times}$10-4% triol saponin, respectively. And the enzyme activity was increased by 27% at 2 hours after intraperitoneal injection of total saponin. Hydroxyacyl Co-A dehydrogenase activity, in vitro, was increased by 77% with 10-4% total saponin, by 64% with 10-2% diol saponin, and by 72% with 10-3% triol saponin, respectively. Also, the enzyme activity, in vivo, was increased by 15.3% and 33% at 2 hours and 4 hours.

  • In folklore medicine Drymaria cordata Willd (Family-Caryophyllaceae) is reported to have laxative and anti-febrile properties along with anti-inflammatory activities. Sikkimis used this plant to treat all these ailments. The anti-inflammatory effect of the methanol extract of D. cordata was investigated against carrageenin, histamine, serotonin, dextran and $PGE_1$ induced rat hind paw oedema. It exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity against all these phlogestic agents except $PGE_1$ in the order of carrageenin > serotonin > histamine. All these effects were compared with standard drug phenylbutazone in both the acute and chronic experimental models in albino rats.

  • The present study was undertaken to determine the metabolic effect of various levels and kinds of fat in the diet. Body lipid metabolism at different period of rat's life was also studied by sacrificing rats and collecting samples initially, at second and fourth week of experimental period. Body weight, FER, PER were low in the group fed 30% fat diet. The weight of internal organ and epididymal fat pad was low in high fat diet group. The level of total serum cholesterol of rats in butter group showed higher than that of soybean oil group when the level of dietary fat content was same. The ratio of total cholesterol and total lipid in serum of rats in butter group appear to be higher than that of soybean oil group.
