  • To investigate the transplacental cytogenic effect of air pollutants the authors collected samples from Shinchon, Guro, Banpo and Jungnung-dongs in winter season. The air filters were extracted by mixture of benzene and ethanol, then a certain amount of extracted sustance was injected to pregnant mice at 16th day of gestation. From the fetal liver emulsion polychromatic erythrocytes were collected and stained with Giemsa solution. The cytogenic effect was evaluated by micronucleus test by which numbers of polychromatic erythrocytes containing microunclei (MNPCE) per 1, 000 polychromatic erythrocytes could be counted.

  • An air spring which is a part of the railroad vehicle suspension system is used to reduce and absorb the vibration and the noise. Main components of the air spying are a cord reinforced rubber bellows, a upper plate, a lower plate and a stopper rubber spring. The characteristics of the air spring which are the load capacity, the vertical and the horizontal stiffness are depended on the configuration of rubber bellows, the angle of cord and the mechanical properties of cord. The computer simulation using commercial finite element analysis codes are executed to predict and evaluate the load capacity and the stiffness. The appropriate shape and cord angle of the air suing are selected to adjust the required performance of the air spring. Several samples of the air spring are manufectured and experimented. It is shown that the results by computer simulation are in close agreement with the test results.

Experimental Study on the Irradiation and Surface Sterilization Effect of Ultra Violet Ray in Air Conditioning System (공조시스템에서 UV Ray의 조사 및 표면살균성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, the use of UVC lamps inside building air-conditioning system has been increasing in both medical and nonmedical buildings for the control of environmental microorganisms. In the present study, irradiance performance test of UVC lamp was carried out and surface sterilization effect of UV ray was investigated by using UV ray irradiation experimental chamber and pilot system. Experimental results show that the effective irradiance of UVC lamp is strongly dependent on air velocity and temperature with exception of relative huminity in air-conditioning system. An individual microbiological kill effectiveness experiment also shows that the fractional kill of two microbiological samples such as E. Coli and Legionella is roughly the same as the estimated fractional kill in the case of chamber test and pilot system test.

Quantitative Assessment Strategy for Determining the Exposures to Volatile Organic Chemicals in Chemistry Laboratories (화학실험실의 휘발성유기화합물 노출에 대한 정량적 평가전략)

  • Working in a research laboratory means exposure to a wide range of hazardous substances. Several studies indicated that laboratory workers, especially working with chemicals, might have an increased risk of certain cancers. However, exposure assessment data in laboratory settings are scarce. This study was performed to examine several approaches for quantitatively assessing the exposure levels to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) among workers in chemistry laboratories. The list of 10 target VOCs, including ethanol, acetone, 2-propanol, dichlormethane, tetrahydrofuran, benzene, toluene, n-hexane, ethyl acetate, chloroform, was determined through self-administered questionnaire for six chemistry research laboratories in a university, a government-funded research institute, or private labs. From September to December 2008, 84 air samples were collected (15 area samples, 27 personal time weighted samples, 42 personal task-basis short-term samples). Real time monitors with photo ionization detector were placed during the sampling periods. In this study, benzene was observed exceeding the action levels, although all the results were below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV). From the air sampling results, we concluded that (1) chemicals emitted during experiments could directly affect to neighbor office areas (2) chemical exposures in research laboratories showed a wide range of concentrations depending on research activities (3) area samples tended to underestimate the exposures relative to personal samples. Still, further investigation, is necessary for developing exposure assessment strategies specific to laboratories with unique exposure profiles.

Metal Concentrations Analysed in the Inorganic Bulk Pigment Samples by ICP-AES and the Provision Rate of MSDS and Agreement Rate with MSDS (우리 나라에서 제조/사용하는 일부 무기 안료중 ICP-AES를 이용한 주요 중금속 농도와 MSDS 비치율 및 일치율 비교)

  • To improve the quality of environmental measurements and evaluation of the workplace air in the pigment manufacturing industries, we analyzed metal(chromium, cadmium, lead, iron, cobalt, manganese, antimony, titanium, arsenic, and selenium) concentrations by ICP-AES in sixty seven samples of inorganic bulk pigments which are produced and/or used in Korea. We also collected MSDS which has to be supplied by manufacturer and/or supplier and posted in the workplace according to the Hazard Communication Standards, and compared the number of metals listed in each MSDS with the number of metals determined by ICP-AES. Results were as followed; 1. Among seventeen yellowish-colored samples, chromium(2~19%) and lead(0.1~61%) were the two major metals. In thirteen reddish-colored samples, iron was the major component with 37~81%. Cobalt and manganese were detected in blue-colored samples with less than 1%, while antimony and titanium were the major two metals in white-colored pigments with 178~300 ppm and with 36~65%, respectively. 2. In area samples collected in workplace air(one pigments producing factory and five retailer stores), iron and manganese were detected but the concentrations not exceeded the TLVs(1 and $5mg/m^3$, respectively). In three of fifteen samples, the concentrations of lead exceeded the TLV ($0.05mg/m^3$). 3. Two out of seven companies provided MSDS, and the average provision rate was 22.4%. And the coincidence rate of the number of metals referenced in MSDS and determined by ICP-AES mostly accorded, but in one sample, different metal was detected from MSDS. In summary, metals have to be concerned in evaluation of the workplace air dealing with compounds of inorganic pigments dust are cobalt, chromium, iron, manganese, lead and antimony, and these are simultaneously determined by ICP-AES. Taking this opportunity, it is needed to reinforce that the personnel is to be concerned about prevention of workers' ill health regarding to provision of MSDS.

Physicochemical Properties of Onion Powder as Influenced by Drying Methods (건조방법에 따른 양파분말의 품질특성)

  • Physicochemical properties of onion powder as influenced by drying methods were investigated. Moisture contents of onion powder were 13.29%, 12.99%, and 10.78% for samples dried using hot-air dryer, freeze dryer, and vacuum dryer, respectively. There were no significant differences in crude fat, crude protein, and crude ash content (p>0.05) depending on the drying methods. Samples prepared by freeze drying showed a significantly higher L-value as compared with those prepared by hot-air and vacuum drying (p<0.05). Scanning electron micrographs showed that freeze drying produced smaller particle-sized sample which in turn resulted in the higher porosity of the sample. Freeze dried samples revealed significantly lower degree of rehydration than other samples (p<0.05) probably due to small particle size of the sample. Water solubility of freeze dried sample appeared to be higher than that of other drying methods while the swelling ratio of the same sample appeared to be lower than that of the others. Browning index was significantly lower in samples prepared by freeze drying (p<0.05) but not significantly different between samples dried by hot-air and vacuum drying. Vitamin C content was higher in freeze dried onion powder due to the lower temperature applied to the sample. Freeze dried onion powder contained significantly lower amount of total polyphenol and higher amount of total sugar as compared to other samples (p<0.05).

Welder's Exposure to Airborne Hexavalent Chromium and Nickel during Arc Welding in a Shipyard (모 조선업체 아크 용접 작업자의 공기중 6가 크롬 및 니켈 노출에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate welders' exposure to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and nickel (Ni) during welding operations in a Korean shipyard. The airborne Cr(VI) and Ni concentrations were measured during metal inert gas (MIG) welding on mild and stainless steel, and manual metal arc (MMA) welding on mild steel. The geometric mean (GM) of Cr(VI) concentrations inside the welding helmet during MIG welding on mild steel were $0.0018mg/m^3$ inside a ship section, and $0.0015-0.0026mg/m^3$ at the welding shops. All of the personal breathing zone air samples were below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value ($TLV^{(R)}$) of $0.01mg/m^3$. Conversely, eighty-eight percent(21 of 24) of the personal breathing zone air samples exceeded the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended exposure limit of $0.001mg/m^3$. Ni was not detected on 20 of 23 air samples collected during MIG welding on mild steel. The three Ni samples above the limit of detection ranged from 0.015 to $0.044mg/m^3$. The GM of Cr(VI) concentrations during MMA welding on mild steel were $0.0013mg/m^3$, but Ni was not detected in the air samples during this operation. It is assumed that the airborne Cr(VI) and Ni during mild steel welding were derived from the base metals which contained about 0.03% Cr and 0.03% Ni. The GM of airborne total Cr, Cr(VI) and Ni concentrations during MIG welding on stainless steel were 4.02, 0.13 and $0.86mg/m^3$, respectively, and the levels of Cr(VI) and Ni were above the ACGIH-$TLV^{(R)}$. Cr(VI) comprised about 35.5% of the total chromium(Cr) from MIG welding on mild steel, and about 8.4% of total Cr from MIG welding on stainless steel. The ratios of Cr(VI) to total Cr were significantly different among welding shops. It was concluded that welders were exposed to high levels of Cr(VI) and Ni during welding on stainless steel, and were exposed to low levels of Cr(VI) even during welding on mild steel.

CHANGES IN CONTENTS OF FORMALDEHYDE AND AMINES IN ALASKA POLLACK MUSCLE DURING DRYING (명태육 건조중의 formaldehyde 및 amine 류의 변화)

  • The present study was conducted to elucidate the pattern in changes of trimethylamine oxide and related compounds in the muscle of Alaska pollack during drying, especially referred to formaladehyde and dimethylamine. Three kinds of dried samples of Alaska pollack, sun dried, hot-air dried, and salted-sun dried, were prepared and analyzed for their contents of trimethylamine oxide, trimethylamine, dimethylamine, and formaldehyde. The amount of trimethylamine oxide remained in the salted-sun dried sample was relatively higher than those in the other two samples. In the content of trimethylamine, the hot-air dried sample showed an exceedingly high value shelving forty-two times higher than the raw sample while the other two samples showed barely three to four times content based on the raw sample. The dimethylamine content in the hot-air fried sample was comparatively lower than those in the other two samples, the former marked about ten folds of the raw sample's and tile latter showed about fifteen folds, respectively. Refering to the content of formaldehyde, it decreased to eighty-three percent of initial content in the hot-air dried sample. On the contrary, it increased about two times initial content in the other two samples, respectively. As a tendency, the formaldehyde content appeared increased or decreased correlatively with the dimethylamine content, whereas the case was reverse for the trimethylamine content.

Estimation of PCDD/Fs Concentrations in Ambient Air Using Pine Needles as a Passive Air Sampler (PAS) (소나무 잎을 PAS로 이용하여 대기 중 PCDD/Fs 농도 추정)

  • Objective: This study was carried out to use pine needles as a passive air sampler (PAS) for atmospheric polychlorinared dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs). Methods: PCDD/Fs concentrations in ambient air ($C_a$, $pg/m^3$) and deposited pine needles ($C_p$, pg/g dry) were analyzed simultaneously from June 1 to December 31. Air samples were taken using two low volume PUF active air samplers with an overall average air volume of approximately $1,200Sm^3$. Pine needles were collected the end of December near the air sampler. PCDD/Fs was analyzed by HRGC/HRMs. Results: A good correlation was shown ($R^2=0.6357$, p=0.0001) between $C_a$ and $C_p$, but a better correlation ($R^2=0.7372$, p<0.0001) existed between the logarithm of octanol-air partitioning coefficient ($LogK_{oa}$) and Log($C_p/C_a$). The average PCDD/Fs sampling rates from air to pine needles were 0.045($0.018-0.185m^3/day-g\;dry$). Conclusion: It was found that pine needles can be used as PAS for atmospheric PCDD/Fs, and they are especially suitable for long time PAS compared to PUF disk PAS.

Effect of Excess Air and Superficial Air Velocity on Operation Characteristics in a Fluidized Bed Coal Combustor (공탑속도 및 과잉공기비에 따른 석탄유동층연소로의 조업특성)

  • The effects of air velocity and excess air on combustion characteristics were studied in a fluidized bed combustor. The domestic low-grade anthracite coal with heating value of 2010 kcal/kg and the imported bituminous coal from Australia with heating value of 6520 kcal/kg were used as coal samples. The combustion characteristics of mixed fuels in a fluidized bed combustor could be interpreted by pressure fluctuation properties, ash distribution and gas emission. The properties of the pressure fluctuations, such as the standard deviation, cross-correlation function, dominant frequency and the power spectral density function, were obtained from the statistical analysis. From this study, the combustion region increased with increasing air velocity but decreased with excess air due to combustion characteristics of anthracite and bituminous coal.
