  • Objectives: The aims of this study are to derive the characteristics of diesel exhaust gas emissions generated during vehicle checking in the garage of fire stations and of the related improvement plans for proper air quality management. Methods: The researcher measured changes in the air quality inside garages according to the operating conditions of the exhaust facility and before and after vehicle checking at three fire stations. Results: During the checking of fire engines, a large volume of hazardous substances exceeding management standards were generated, and improvement of the discharge facilities was required for proper air quality management. Conclusions: It is necessary to study the hazard evaluation of firefighters' exposure to exhaust gas, to operate exhaust gas ventilation facilities, and to prepare technical standards for proper indoor air quality management.

  • Filter badge type sampler has not been widely used to evaluate air quality over large cities in Korea while it can be successfully used for multi-point sampling and analysis. We evaluated the passive sampler as a new tool to monitor air quality over large cities. We latticed Metropolitan Seoul into $2{\times}2Km$ to give 136 points. $NO_2$ concentrations were measured at all the points in the Spring and Summer of 1997. According to the passive sampler data, natural green zones generally recorded lower $NO_2$ concentrations than major streets and traffic congestion areas. Passive samplers with abundant 136 points gave more detailed picture of $NO_2$ distribution while auto-monitoring network did not clearly provide the characteristics of local land use. Also, passive samplers gave 15% higher values than auto-monitoring network. The correlation between the two values appears very high judging from the regression slope of 0.92 and correlation coefficient of 0.91. This study clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the passive sampler as a tool to monitor air quality over large cities.

  • This paper describes on methods in test and evaluation of the guided rocket munitions of the domestic new generation multiple launcher rocket system. We modified and refer to the present model of air-to-air missile(AAM) and surface-to-air missile(SAM). Also we suggested a method of surface-to-surface missile(SSM) based on the characteristics of the guided rocket in test and evaluation(T&E). According to this study, the suggested activity of T&E should be observed methods compatible with each item on the established model. Therefore, we expect that the proposed research material will be a good guide to the study of a surface-to-surface missile(SSM) installed GPS/INS integration navigation guidance & control systems in the future.

  • The air quality index (AQI) is an index for reporting daily or hourly air quality to the general public. The AQI focuses on health effects that can happen within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. Many countries have their own AQI reporting systems, and the HAEI (hourly air environment index) method is now being used in Korea. In this study, in order to compare the AQI results from different methods, we applied three methods. i.e. US AQI, Canadian AQI, and Korean HAEI, to the same air quality data-base. The data-base was constructed from 10 monitoring sites in Gyeong-buk province for the last four years since 2000. Based on the results, a critical evaluation of the Korean HAEI method was made, and a number of suggestions and recommendations were presented to improve the AQI reporting system in Korea.

  • Perceived air quality (PAQ) is defined as evaluation of indoor air satisfaction and comfortable sensory by occupants. However, there are differences between criteria of indoor pollutants and lowest sensory thresholds. In this study, we compared indoor PAQ by questionnaire with measured benzene, toluene and nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) concentrations in home indoors. The $NO_2$ concentration was the highest in Seoul, while benzene and toluene were the highest in Asan. Average PAQ score in winter was higher than that in summer. Significant correlations between PAQs of home indoor air pollution and measured pollutant concentrations were not shown and correlation coefficients (r) ranged between -0.453

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of air pollution level in industrial and residential district of Ulsan on resident's evaluation and cognition for indoor environment. The evaluation of air pollution materials (as $SO_2$, $NO_2$, $O_3$, CO, PM10) were investigated to understand the distributional characteristics in survey area, and air quality monitoring data from 2007 to 2009 were used. The data was applied in a realtime measurement of industrial and residential area respected to difference of the pollution level in Ulsan. The questionnaire of this survey for resident's cognition was to find out characteristics on perception of indoor environment and outdoor air quality recognition based on the distinct characteristics of the areas. The results of this study shows that resident's satisfaction at clean level outdoor air and indoor environment were different whether it was residential area or industrial area and outdoor air pollution level has direct influence on resident's satisfaction in indoor environment.

  • In this research, the present standard analytical methods for the monitoring of air pollution levels established by the Korean Ministry of Environment (KMOE) were examined in reference to the recent outputs of several research projects conducted for their amendments. The evaluation of the two criterion methods between the main (the present guideline) and reference methods (the proposed alternate guideline) was made in terms of authenticity and reliability of the quality assurance (QA) and of compatibility of methods. The results of this comparative evaluation are presented for the analysis of both ambient air and source samples. Based on this analysis, we propose a new direction for the future amendment.

  • This study is a preliminary study to establish the criteria for evaluating the performance of the window-integrated ventilation system. This study analyzed various references that can evaluate the performance of the ventilation system and established the evaluation method. In addition, the performance evaluation method was quantitatively evaluated by conducting a pilot experiment to verify and supplement the performance evaluation method of the ventilation system. The performance of the ventilation system was categorized into ventilation, air quality, airtightness, noise, visibility and view according to the evaluation category. In particular, according to the ventilation and air quality evaluation, it was found that the indoor carbon dioxide concentration can be reduced by about 14 % when the window-integrated ventilation system is applied. The ventilation performance evaluation method and experimental data of this study will serve as basic data for subsequent studies to establish comprehensive performance evaluation criteria for similar ventilation systems.

  • On January 1, 2005, the Korean Ministry of Environment put into operation a comprehensive program, so called 'Blue Sky 21' project, for the improvement of air quality in greater Seoul metropolitan area. This program was legally based on the 'Special Act on Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement' for Greater Seoul area, which was established in 2003, and should be updated every 10 years. The principal objective of this program is to improve the air quality in Seoul and surrounding area by 2014 to the levels of air quality in Tokyo and Paris, with particular emphases on reducing the concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and $PM_{10}$. Any regulation of the emission of toxic air pollutants in general, and $NO_2$ and $PM_{10}$ in particular, should be based on human exposure levels and consequential health effects. In this article, the contents and feasibility of the special program were critically evaluated with respect to the reduction of health risks. Important issues for improving not only air quality but public health are discussed, and future requirements for the success of the special program are suggested.
