The guidelines for indoor air quality of public transportations such as subway, train and bus was presented by Korean Ministry of Environment last end of year 2006 based on the great consequence of indoor air quality in daily life. Two main parameters, carbon dioxide($CO_2$) and particulate matters smaller than $10\;{\mu}m(PM_{10})$, were selected as index pollutants for the management of indoor air quality. The former pollutant, $CO_2$, is regarded as index of ventilation status and the major source of $CO_2$ in the train or subway is the exhalation of passengers. It is publically perceived that the high $CO_2$ concentration in a crowded subway will be reduced and ventilated with outdoor air by door-opening taken every 2 or 3 minutes when the train stops each station. However, there has not been any scientific proof and quantitative information on the effect of door-opening on the $CO_2$ reduction by ventilation with outdoor air. In this study, $CO_2$ concentration and number of passengers were measured at each station on the 3 lines of Korail metropolitan subway. In order to evaluate the effect of $CO_2$ reduction by door opening, the theoretical approach using the $CO_2$ balance equation was performed. By comparing the predicted data with monitoring one, the optimum $CO_2$ dilution factor was determined. For the first time, it was quantified that about 35% of $CO_2$ concentration in the subway indoor was removed by the door-opening at each station.
The objective of this work is the air quality modeling according to the scenarios of emission on complex terrain. The prognostic meteorological fields and air quality field over complex areas of Seoul, Korea are generated by the PSU/NCAR mesoscale model (MM5) and the Third Generation Community Multi-scale Air Quality Modeling System (Models - 3/CMAQ), respectively. The emission source was driven from the Clean Air Policy Support System of the Korea National institute of Environmental Research (CAPSS), which is a 1 km x 1 km grid in South Korea during 2003. In comparison of air quality fields, the simulated averaged $PM_{10},\;NO_2,\;and\;O_3$ concentration on complex terrain in control case were decreased as compared with base case. Particularly $PM_{10}$ revealed most substantial localized differences by $(18{\sim}24{\mu}g/m^3)$. The reduction rate of $PM_{10},\;NO_2,\;and\;O_3$ is respectively 18.88, 13.34 and 4.17%.
Purpose: Recently, an increasing number of farms have been cultivating shiitake mushrooms using a sawdust substrate and a cooler/heater. In this study, an attempt was made to develop an environmental control system using a heat pump for cultivating high-quality shiitake mushrooms. Methods: An environmental control system, consisting of an air-to-water type heat pump, a thermal storage tank, and a radiator in a variable opening chamber, was designed and fabricated. The system was also installed in the cultivation facility of a farm cultivating shiitake mushrooms so as to compare the proposed control system with a conventional environmental control system using a cooler-condensing unit and an electric hot water boiler. Results: The uniformity of the environment was analyzed through environment measurements taken at several positions inside the cultivation facility. It was determined that the developed environmental control system is able to control the variations in temperature and relative humidity to within 1% and 3%, respectively. In addition, a maximum temperature difference of $30^{\circ}C$ (maximum of $35^{\circ}C$, minimum of $5^{\circ}C$) and a maximum relative humidity difference of 30% (maximum of 90%, minimum of 60%) can be attained within 30 min inside the cultivation facility through the cooling of the heat pump and heating of the radiator in a variable opening chamber. Thus, the developed control system can be used to cultivate high-quality shiitake mushrooms more effectively than a conventional cooler and heater. Conclusions: In comparison with a conventional environmental control system, the developed system decreased the yield of ordinary mushrooms by 65%, and increased that of high-quality mushrooms by 217%. This corresponds to a 16% increase in gross farm income. Consequently, the developed system is expected to improve the income of shiitake mushroom cultivating farms.
Air springs are now widely used in bus or truck suspensions due to their advantages over conventional metal spring as coil or leaf springs. Air springs have soft spring rates, which give better ride quality, and additional leveling system provides constant ride height and maintains almost same vertical natural frequencies. A mathematical model of an air spring suspension system with height control system is constructed and dynamic responses of the suspension system are investigated in the light of leveling valve motion characteristic, vertical motion natural frequency. Also, using a full vehicle model, handling characteristics of an air spring suspension is studied and the results are compared with real test results, which shows good agreements.
Researches on air-ground robot cooperating system has been made recently. The cooperation among homogeneous robots focused on the architecture of the system, quality and influence of the communication. In contrast, the cooperation among heterogeneous robots such as aerial vehicle and ground vehicle robots has not been much handled. There are a couple of main points for those air-ground cooperating robots. One is using UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) as an extra sensor of UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle). This kind of application is usually used in situations such as guiding UGV to an appropriate path which could be better determined from the eye in the sky as UAV. The other main application of air-ground cooperating robot system is the localization. By combining sensor information from both UAV and UGV, the robot system as a whole can localize a target object or find features in the environment with better performance than UGV or UAV alone. Although these applications are recently studied in many different ways and devices, there are still a lot of possibilities in the field of air-ground cooperating robot systems. We introduce those research fields in this paper.
In electric power industry. load balance has been one of the most fundamental and important management goals. Therefore. the strategy to achieve high quality load management now includes load balance besides the stabilization of electricity supply and quality management of electricity. Amongst many techniques of load management. direct load management has been actively studied and utilized to increase power facility and peak load suppression. Higher peak load situation is appeared during summer than during winter in Korea. and approximately 20% of the peak load is due to the load for air-conditioning. To cope with this peak load problem during summer KEPCO is performing a research project to develop a system to remotely control air-conditioning load using wireless communication. Currently, applicable facilities are limited to small-scale air-conditioning facility that has less than 2KW power capacity. This paper described the 1st year of efforts made in the study.
We have surrounded undesired living noises in our life. One of biggest noises coming out of range hood during cooking in the kitchen. A range hood is one of the most important appliances in the kitchen because it ventilates polluted air out during cooking, and maintains air quality in the kitchen. But current kitchen range hoods bring up some issues; First, the range hoods consume massive amount of standby power not in use condition. Second, current models have designed manual fan operating system with sudden onset of noise with starting. In this paper, we propose an auto control system entire processes from air ventilation to noise reduction. Our system is consist of three parts (Eco-sensors pack, Main Controller and Active Noise Controller); Eco-sensors pack detects air pollution of kitchen areas and sends the detection values to Main Controller. Main Controller determines operation of range hood by detected values. Active Noise Controller is located inside of the range hood. It received starting signals from Main Controller which elicits degrees of polluted air condition and fan operating speed from 1 to 3. Once Active Noise Controller detected the signals, it runs a ventilating fan until new value from Main Controller becomes 0. while the range hood works, A noise cancellation algorithm inside of Active Noise Controller become activated to reduce levels of noise. As a result, the proposed system clearly shows reduction in power consumption include standby power and decreases in levels of noise.

The Korean medical evacuation helicopter was developed based on the Korean Utility Helicopter (hereafter referred to as 'Surion'). It uses an auxiliary power unit and engine for heating during winter operation. The helicopter maintains the internal temperature of the aircraft using its bleed air to satisfy its operational capability. However, due to the air inflow through the gap between the aircraft skin and door, additional heating for operating the portable medical equipment and preventing hypothermia in evacuated patients is required. Accordingly, an electric auxiliary heater was developed for additional heating during winter operation, and environmental, durability, and performance tests were conducted per MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-461F. The auxiliary heater was verified per the tailored airworthiness certification criteria.
In this paper, a single-phase PFC (Power Factor Correction) dual boost converter based on input voltage estimation is studied for DC inverter air conditioner. It is focused on improving input power factor and power quality to satisfy the recent harmonic current regulation standards. Furthermore the input voltage estimation is introduced for price competitive products. A low cost and reasonable control system is implemented using a specified high-speed 32-bit microprocessor. Their effectiveness are verified through theoretical analysis and experiments.
Grafting of fruit-bearing vegetables has been widely used to increase the resistance to soil-borne diseases, to increase the tolerance to low temperature or to soil salinity, to increase the plant vigor, and to extend the duration of economic harvest time. After grafting, it is important to control the environment around grafted seedlings for the robust joining of a scion and rootstock. Usually the shading materials and plastic films are used to keep the high relative humidity and low light intensity in greenhouse or tunnel. It is quite difficult to optimally control the environment for healing and acclimation of grafted seedlings under natural light. So the farmers or growers rely on their experience for the production of grafted seedling with high quality. If artificial light is used as a lighting source for graft-taking of grafted seedlings, the light intensity and photoperiod can be easily controlled. The purpose of this study was to develop a prototype system for the graft-taking enhancement of grafted seedlings using artificial lighting and to investigate the effect of air current speed on the distribution of air temperature and relative humidity in a graft-taking enhancement system. A prototype graft-taking system was consisted by polyurethane panels, air-conditioning unit, system controller and lighting unit. Three band fluorescent lamps (FL20SEX-D/18, Kumho Electric, Inc.) were used as a lighting source. Anemometer (Climomaster 6521, KANOMAX), T-type thermocouples and humidity sensors (CHS-UPS, TDK) were used to measure the air current speed, air temperature and relative humidity in a graft-taking system. In this system, air flow acted as a driving force for the diffusion of heat and water vapor. Air current speed, air temperature and relative humidity controlled by a programmable logic controller (UP750, Yokogawa Electric Co) and an inverter (MOSCON-G3, SAMSUNG) had an even distribution. Distribution of air temperature and relative humidity in a graft-taking enhancement system was fairly affected by air current speed. Air current speed higher than 0.1m/s was required to obtain the even distribution of environmental factors in this system. At low air current speed of 0.1m/s, the evapotranspiration rate of grafted seedlings would be suppressed and thus graft-taking would be enhanced. This system could be used to investigate the effects of air temperature, relative humidity, air current speed and light intensity on the evaportranspiration rate of grafted seedlings.
