  • Carbon composites with $MoSi_2$ dispersion were prepared by hot-pressing at $1700^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa for 1 h using polysilazance as binding material. The composites consisted of C, $Mo_{4.8}Si_3C_{0.6}$ and SiC. Bulk density and porosity of the carbon composites with 10 vol% $MoSi_2$ was 1.8g.$\textrm{cm}^{-3}$ and 34%, respectively. This composite was oxidized about 0.05mm from the surface of the carbon composite after oxidation test at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 10h in air. Formation of the $SiO_2$ glass layer was observed by SEM. When this composite suffered damage in the coating layer, it had hardly farther oxidation because of its self-repairing property. The composite prepared in this study indicated good oxidation resistance.

  • The effect of TiC content on oxidation behavior of the sintered WC-TiC-TaC alloys with 2 mass% TaC and different TiC amounts of 3-45 mass% was investigated through oxidation tests in air at 973K. As a result of the tests, it was revealed that with increasing TiC content in the alloys, mass changes caused by oxidation and thickness of the scale decreased. Thus, it is considered that the main component of the scales changed gradually from $WO_3$ to $TiO_2$ with increasing TiC content in the alloys, and oxygen diffusion through the scale to the alloys was inhibited gradually.

  • Arc-melted Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-4Fe and Ti-(1,2) Si alloys were oxidized at 700, 800, 900 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation resistance of Ti-4Fe was comparable to that of Ti-6Al-4V, while the oxidation resistance of Ti-(1,2) Si was superior to that of Ti-6Al-4V. Ti-2Si displayed the best oxidation resistance among the four alloys, but failed after oxidation at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 17h. The oxide scale formed on Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-4Fe and Ti-(1,2)Si consisted of ($TiO_2$ and a small amount of $Al_2$$O_3$), ($TiO_2$ and a small amount of dissolved iron), and ($TiO_2$ plus a small concentration of amorphous $SiO_2$), respectively. The oxide grains of the surface scale of the four alloys were generally fine and round.

  • Pure $Fe_3$Al alloys with three different compositions of Fe-21.8%Al, Fe-24.1%Al and Fe-27.2%Al were prepared by vacuum induction melting followed by homogenization and hot forging. The long-time oxidation behavior of the prepared alloys was studied at 1073, 1273 and 1473k in air. The oxidation resistance greatly increased with an increase in Al contents. Thin and uniform oxide scales were always formed on Fe-27.2%Al, while thick and fragile oxide scales were formed on Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al. Internal oxidation was observed in Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al, when oxidized above 1273K. The major oxidation product of all the oxidized alloys was always $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$.

  • Amorphous BON and Si-DLC thin films were synthesized by the RF plasma enhanced CVD method, and their oxidation behavior was studied up to $500^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation of both films was accompanied by evaporation of volatile species. The oxidation of BON film was preceded by nitrogen escape from the film, and oxygen penetration into the film. The oxidation of Si-DLC film was preceded by carbon escape probably as CO or $CO_2$from the film, and oxygen penetration into the film. The inwardly transported oxygen simply stayed in the oxidized BON and Si-DLC thin films.

  • To investigate new potential application of a clay material for C/C composites, illite added C/C composites were prepared with various illite contents. The improvement of filler effect by illite size reduction was also investigated using wet ballmilling by evaluating illite/phenolic resin infiltration using bulk density and porosity measurements, chemical structural changes of the composites using XRD, and thermal oxidation stability in air of the composites using TGA. The size reduction of illite resulted in narrower particle size distribution and improved illite infiltration into carbon preform. And the resultant C/C composites prepared with illite had even more improved thermal oxidation stability in air, showing more increased IDTs up to $100^{\circ}C$, compared to those of the C/C composites with pristine illite, due to the SiC formation through carbothermal reduction between illite and carbon materials. The illite induced delay in oxidation of the illite-C/C composites was also observed and the delayed oxidation behavior was attributed to the layered structure of illite, which improved illite/phenol resin infiltration. Therefore, the potential use of illite as filler to improve oxidation stability of C/C composite can be promising. And the size reduction of illite can improve its effect on the desired properties of illite-C/C composites even more.

  • Lipid oxidation is one of the major factors affecting on deterioration of nutritional quality in boiled and dired fish products. In this paper, the relationship between oxidized products of lipid, brown pigments, and available lysine during the drying and the storage of boiled and dried shrimp (Metapenaeus joynri) was investigated. Fresh shrimps were bioled in 5% sodium chloride solution. The boiled shrimps were treated in two ways, sun drying and hot air drying at $30{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. And the two dried products were stored at $30{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ for one month. The results obtained are as follows: TBA value increased up to 20 days and hereafter gradually diminished. POV was increased for processing and increased 15 days of storage. TBA value and POV increased rapidly while available lysine diminished during the sun drying and hot air drying. Brown pigment was increased during lipid oxidation but it was not statistically significant. This result implicits that the drying had greatly influenced on the oxidation of lipid and makes amino acids 'unavailable'. But there is no remarkable difference between the sun dried shrimps and the hot air dried shrimps so far as the lipid oxidation and available lysine.

  • In this study, the Al-rich AlTiSiN thin films that consisted of TiN/AlSiN nano-multilayers were deposited on the steel substrate by magnetron sputtering, and their high-temperature oxidation behavior was investigated, which has not yet been adequately studied to date. Since the oxidation behavior of the films depends sensitively on the deposition method and deposition parameters which affect their crystallinity, composition, stoichiometry, thickness, surface roughness, grain size and orientation, the oxidation studies under various conditions are imperative. AlTiSiN nano-multilayer thin films were deposited on a tool steel substrate, and their oxidation behavior of was investigated between 600 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. Since the amount of Al which had a high affinity for oxygen was the largest in the film, an ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3-rich$ scale formed, which provided good oxidation resistance. The outer surface scale consisted of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ incoporated with a small amount of Ti, Si, and Fe. Below this outer surface scale, a thin ($Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $SiO_2$)-intermixed scale formed by the inwardly diffusing oxygen. The film oxidized slower than the $TiO_2-forming$ kinetics and TiN films, but faster than ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3-forming$ kinetics. During oxidation, oxygen from the atmosphere diffused inwardly toward the reaction front, whereas nitrogen and the substrate element of iron diffused outwardly to a certain extent.

  • In this study, land farming and chemical oxidation of a diesel-contaminated site is compared to evaluate the environmental impact during soil remediation using the Spreadsheet for Environmental Footprint Analysis by U.S. EPA. Each remediation process is divided into four phases, consisting of soil excavation, backfill and transportation (Phase 0), construction of remediation facility (Phase 1), remediation operation (Phase 2), and restoration of site and waste disposal (Phase 3). Environmental footprints, such as material use, energy consumption, air emission, water use and waste generation, are analyzed to find the way to minimize the environmental impact. In material use and waste generation, land farming has more environmental effect than chemical oxidation due to the concrete and backfill material used to construct land farming facility in Phase 1. Also, in energy use, land farming use about six times more energy than chemical oxidation because of cement production and fuel use of heavy machinery, such as backhoe and truck. However, carbon dioxide, commonly considered as important factor of environmental impact due to global warming effect, is emitted more in chemical oxidation because of hydrogen peroxide production. Water use of chemical oxidation is also 2.1 times higher than land farming.
