  • Airlift pumps were tested to evaluate their pumping and aeration capacities. The pumps were 34.5 inch long made of 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch nominal diameter PVC pipes. An one hp air blower was used to supply the air. The air-flow rate was measured by an anemometer type air-flow meter and air pressure was level changes in a water tank from which water was pumped. Aeration by the pumps was tested by the standard aeration test method with the center of pump outlet positioned 3 inches above water surface. Oxygen concentrations in water were measured to determine aeration rate. As pumping head increased by water level draw-down in the tank water flow decreased while air flow increased. The reduction rate of water flow was higher with 4 and 6-inch pumps. Small pumps showed very minor changes in the reduction. Aeration rates were similar among 3, 4, and 6 inch pumps. With one hp air blower 6-inch pump at the minimum pumping head achieved the best performance in terms of water circulation.

  • This study aimed at characterizing unsaturated zone at the source zone area contaminated by DNAPL and investigating feasibility of soil vapor extraction (SVE). Five boreholes with three multi-level screens at the depth of 3.0~4.5 m, 5.5~7.0 m, and 8.0~12.0 m were installed at the source zone. Pneumatic tests were performed to determine the permeability of porous medium. Permeability was estimated to be 81.6 to 203.7 darcy, depending on the applied solutions, which was contradicted by grain size analysis of cored soil samples leading to 3.51 darcy. This is due to air flow through gravel pack during the early stage of pneumatic test. Pressure-drawdown curve in the late stage also well showed the leaky aquifer type, indicating air leakage to the ground. Air flow tests were also carried out to investigate air flow connectivity between multi-level wells, indicating that the horizontal air flow was well developed between the lower screens of the wells, not between the upper and middle screens due to the leakage to the surface. For the SVE test, there was no noticeable variation in TCE vapor concentration between three different test runs: 1. 8 hours daily for 5 days, 2. 24 hours together with air blowing at another well (BH1), 3. five consecutive days. Even for five-day consecutive test, total amount of removed TCE was estimated only to be as low as 46.5 g.

  • One of the most important objects for the industrial ventilation is to protect worker's health from the harmful substances. Mainly in industrial ventilation, the harmful substances broken out through manufacturing process are to be quickly emitted outside. Recently the importance of the industrial ventilation increases with the recognition change of industrial ventilation from manufacturing focusing to human focusing. In this paper, the air flow simulation inside the coating room is performed. All the coating room and the ventilation system are modeled by SolidWorks program and air flow distribution and ventilation performance are analyzed by Flow simulation program. And the air flow directions and the air flow velocities inside the coating room are enhanced with the use of local ventilation.

  • The flow analyses around the wing of airplane installed with winglet or sharkelt were carried out in this study. At the model without winglet, it can be seen that the air flows beside the wing and the flow is concentrated at the end of wing. At the model of winglet or sharklet, the pressure on the bottom of the wing happens to be lower in the wide area than for model without winglet. At the analysis result, the air flowing next to the wing can be seen to go over and rotates over the main wing. The model with the sharklet shows that the flow rate is the fastest. In case of model with sharklet, it is thought that the maximum total pressure of flow is distributed at the bottom of the wing, which can further improve the lift force of the wing. It is thought that the analysis results in this study on the air flow due to the configuration of aircraft edge wing can be helped at its convergent research.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of cold air flow according to spatial types in urban areas of Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. The spatial types were classified by cluster analysis considering the land use map, building information, and topographic characteristics produced on the Changwon biotope map. The amount of cold air and wind speed were derived by KLAM_21 modeling. As a result, spatial types were classified into a total of 14 types considering the density and height of buildings, land use types, and topographic characteristics. Cold air flow was found to generate cold air in the valley of the forest area outside urban area, move through roads and open spaces, and accumulate in the low-lying national industrial complex, and then spread cold air throughout the urban areas. There was a lot of cold air flow in the tall building area, and the cold air accumulation was less in the slope and ridge areas. The results of this study were able to understand the characteristics of cold air flow according to building density, land use type, and topography, which will be usefully used as basic data for urban wind road construction to mitigate climate and improve air quality in urban areas.

  • Since the characteristics of combustion and pollutant in Diesel engines were mainly effected by the characteristics of in-cylinder gas flow and fuel spray, an understanding of those was essential to the design of the D.I. Diesel engines. The improvement of volumetric efficiency of air charging into combustion chamber is a primary requirement to obtain better mean effective pressure of an engine. Since parameters such as the air resistances in intake and exhaust flow passages, valve lift and valve shape influence greatly to the volumetric efficiency, it is very important to investigate the flow characteristics of intake and exhaust port which develops air motion in the combustion chamber. In this study, two approach methods were used for design intake and exhaust port; experiment and computation which were made by using steady flow test rig and commercial CFD code. This paper presents the results of an experimental and analytical investigation of steady flow through the prototype cylinder head ports and valves of the HHI's H21/32 HIMSEN Engine.

  • In a closed square cavity filled with a liquid, a cooled the upper horizontal wail and a heated the lower horizontal wall, the flow isn't generated under the ground-based condition when Rayleigh number is lower than 1700. In such case the flow phenomena near an air bubble under a cooled horizontal wall were investigated. The temperature and the flow fields were studied by using the Thermo-sensitive Liquid-Crystal and the image processing. The qualitative analysis for the temperature and the flow fields were carried out by applying the image processing technique to the original data. Injecting bubble at the center point of upper cooled wall, the symmetry shape of two vortexes near an air bubble was observed. The bubble size increased, the size of velocity and the magnitude of velocity increased. In spite of elapsed time, a pair of two vortexes was the unique and steady-state flow in a square cavity and wasn't induce to the other flow in the surround region.

  • Optimal design of an air-to-liquid finned plate heat exchanger is considered theoretically in this study. Based on existing correlations for the pressure loss and the heat transfer in channel flows, the optimal configuration of the plate heat exchanger including the optimal plate pitch and the optimal fin pitch is obtained to maximize the heat transfer within the limit of the pressure drop for a given flow depth of the plate heat exchanger. It is found that the optimal fin pitch is about one ninth of the optimal plate pitch. In the optimal configuration, the flow and thermal condition in the channels is just at the boundary between the laminar developing and laminar fully developed states. It is also found when reducing the flow depth of plate heat exchangers for compactness, the heat transfer performance can be maintained exactly the same if the geometric parameters such as the plate thickness, plate pitch, fin thickness, and fin pitch are reduced proportional to the square root of the flow depth as long as the flow keeps laminar within the heat exchangers.

  • In this study, the experimental study has carried out to select pitch angle on the backward flow in an axial fan that has adjustable pitch blades. With the change of pitch angle of axial fan with adjustable blade, air flow rate, pressure and air flow direction can be changed. Because of this merit, adjustable axial fan can be used in the backward flow. For the selection of the backward flow pitch angle, fan performance test method is selected by KS B 6311. Dynamic pressure, static pressure, electric current and voltage are measured in each pitch angles of axial fan that are $36^{\circ}C$, $-16^{\circ}C$, $-21^{\circ}C$, $-26^{\circ}C$, $-31^{\circ}C$ and $-36^{\circ}C$. In the result of test, fan performance curves at several pitch angle has been investigated. Finally, pitch angle of $-26^{\circ}C$ has been selected to get largest flow rate at backward flow situation.
