  • This study estimated the contribution rates of inlet air flow, moisture content, air-filled porosity and particle size on the total pressure drop for the sawdust used as the bulking agent in the composting. The statistical model for pressure drop including the affecting factors was proposed.($R^2=0.998{\sim}0.950$) While the laminar air flow(v) and particle size(SIZE*v) had the positive relations to the total pressure drop, the turbulent air flow($v^2$), moisture content(MC*v) and air-filled porosity(AFP*v) had the negative relations. Total pressure drop sharply increased with increasing of the inlet air flow. And the most significant factors affecting to total pressure drop were the particle size(SIZE*v) as positive factor and air-filled porosity(AFP*v) as negative factor. The contribution rate to total pressure drop by the particle size(SIZE*v) was continuously increased with increasing of the inlet air flow, but the contribution rate by air-filled porosity(AFP*v) was decreased. And total pressure drop was little changed even though the increasing of moisture content above the range of dry moisture content 0.25. The contribution rates of affecting factors had the different tendencies with increasing of the moisture content, especially in the negative factors as air-filled porosity(AFP*v) and moisture content(MC*v). For effective composting process, it is preferable to select the sawdust with higher air-filled porosity as bulking agent to enhance the air permeability.

  • Common bulking agents in composting system include woody materials such as sawdust and woodchips. These bulking agents are mainly used for the purpose of the proper control of C/N ratio and moisture content in the composting. The topic for the effect on air permeability of bulking agents has far received relatively little attention in the composting field. This study investigated the effect of bulk density, moisture content, air-filled porosity, particle size and air flow rate on air permeability of several mixture ratios of sawdust and woodchip bulking agent. Increasing the moisture contents, the air-filled porosity was decreased and the particle size was increased for all kinds of bulking agent mixtures. Especially, with the increasing of mixing ratio of woodchip, these effects were sharply magnified. The air permeability respond to air-filled porosity was very similar to that for moisture content which was anticipated the linear relationship between air-filled porosity and moisture content. Above the region of moisture content 0.25 or 0.43(d.b.)(20 or 30% w.b.), the pressure drop decreased even though air-filled pore spaces were filling with water. Especially, to the particle size of 5 mm the pressure drop was decreased exponentially, so the air permeability was dramatically improved. By the water had the role of binding of the small particles, the macropores less resistances to air flow were created in the matrix. The effect of particle size on air permeability was much stronger than that of air-filled porosity or moisture content. And it is needed the preparing of initial particle size above 5 mm for efficient composting.

  • Acoustic pressure transmission coefficient and phase velocity are measured as the functions of water porosity and air porosity in sand sediment slabs with water- and air-filled pores. Pores in the sand sediment slab we modeled as the structure of circular cylindrical tube shape filled with water and air. The first kind(fast) wave and second kind (slow) wave, identified by Biot, in the solid and fluid mixed medium are affected by the presence of water and air pores. Acoustic characteristics of such porous medium in water are also theoretically investigated in terms of the modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model, which uses the separate treatment of viscosity effect and thermal effect in non-rigid porous medium with water- and air-filed pores. The information on the fast waves introduces new concepts of the generalized tortuosity factor and dynamic shape factor.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the mixed ratio of the soil amendments, peat, humate, peatmoss and zeolite, on the soil physicochemical properties. The mixed ratios of soil amendments were 0%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 10% (v/v) incorporated with sand which met to the USGA (United State of Golf Association) recommendation. It was measured pH, EC and CEC as a chemical properties. Porosity, capillary porosity, air-filled porosity, bulk density and hydraulic conductivity were also measured to analyze the changes of physical properties. Chemical properties were significantly different by mixture ratios of peat, humate, peatmoss and zeolite. When the results were applied to the USGA standard of the soil physical properties, the optimum mixture ratios of peat, humate and peatmoss were 5%, 3% and 7%, respectively. Air-filled porosity was factor involved in soil physical properties by blending with soil amendments and it was affected on volume of porosity and hydraulic conductivity. To analyze the corelation of mixture ratio versus to physical characters, the ratio of peat and peatmoss was significantly related to capillary porosity and hydraulic conductivity (P<0.05), that of humate hydraulic conductivity (P<0.01), and that of zeolite air-filled porosity and volume of porosity (P<0.05). These results could be used as a basic data for construction USGA sand green.

  • Differences in the filling amount of substrates in container can influence severely on the soil physical properties and crop growth. This research was conducted to secure the fundamental informations related to the changes in soil physical properties as influenced by the filling amount of coir dust-based substrates in container. For the experiment, three substrates were formulated by blending coir dust (CD) with expanded rice hull (CD+ERH, 8:2, v/v), carbonized rice hull (CD+CRH, 6:4, v/v) or ground and aged pine bark (CD+GAPB, 8:2, v/v). Based on the optimum bulk density, the amount of substrates filled in 347.5mL aluminum cylinder were adjusted to 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130%. Then the changes in total porosity (TP), container capacity (CC), and air-filled porosity (AFP) by various filling amounts were measured. The TP decreased linearly in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB and quadratically in CD+CRH as the filling amounts of the media increased from 90% to 130%. The CC in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB media increased as the filling amount increased from 90% to 120%, then decreased in 130%, showing quadratic change. The CC in CD+CRH was the highest in 90% filling amount and decreased gradually as the filling amount of root medea increased. The AFPs in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB media were 38 and 37%, respectively in 90% filling amount and they decreased drastically until 110% filling, then gradually in 120 and 130% filling amount showing the quadratic changes. The AFP of CD+CRH at 90% filling amount was 22% and it decreased as the filling amount increased until 130%, showing linear change. These results indicate that the increase in filling amount of substrates influenced more severely the AFP than CC, and careful consideration on container filling is required to provide a better root condition thus maximize crop growth.

  • Porous media containing complex fluid passage have especially large surface area per unit volume. This study is aimed to identify the heat transfer characteristics of high-porosity metal foams in a horizontal channel. Experiment is performed under various heat flux, velocity and pore density. Nusselt number decreases with higher pore density. Metal foams shows higher heat transfer coefficients than pin-fin structure with the same porosity. This is due to the more complex flow passage and larger heat transfer area based on the structure of the metal foams. The analysis on the pin-fin structure may not be suitable to the metal foam structure but should be identified extensively through further study.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the mixture ratio of a soldier fly casts (SFC), compost and cocopeat on the soil physicochemical properties. The mixture ratios of soil amendment were 0%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 10% (V/V) incorporated with sand which met to the USGA particle standard. To analyze the effects of amendments on soil chemical properties, pH and EC were measured. The porosity, capillary porosity, air-filled porosity, bulk density and hydraulic conductivity also measured to analyze the physical properties. Chemical properties were significantly different by mixture ratios of a SFC, compost and cocopeat. Capillary porosity was a factor involved in soil physical properties by blending with a SFC and compost. It was affected on the volume of porosity or hydraulic conductivity. To analyze the correlation of mixture ratio versus to physical characters, the ratios of SFC were significantly different in capillary porosity, air-filled porosity, and hydraulic conductivity. These results indicated that mixing ratios of SFC were affected on soil physicochemical properties such as porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the root zone on the USGA sand green.

  • Rapid development of electronic technology requires small size, high density packaging and high power of electronic devices, which result in more heat generation by the electronic system. Present cooling technology may not be adequate for the thermal management in the current state-of-the-art electronic equipment. Forced convective heat transfer in a channel filled with pin-fin array is studied experimentally in this paper as an alternative cool-ing scheme for a high heat-dissipating equipment. Various configurations of the pin-fin array are selected in order to find out the effect of spacing and diameter of the pin-fin on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. In the low porosity region, interfacial heat transfer and pressure drop seem to show different trend compared to the conventional heat transfer process.

  • The present study is concerned with the flow friction and heat transfer characteristics of the combination of various regenerator materials, using the different Darcy number and porosity, which is filled uniformly and partially in a tube under oscillating flow condition. The poros medium is adopted as Brinkmann-Forschheimer extended Darcy model. Numerical results are obtained or the flow and temperature fields and described the effect of the combination of various regenerator materials and Womersley number on the pressure drop, the heat transfer and the regenerator efficiency. The results obtained indicate that not only heat transfer between the tube wall and oscillating flow but also the pressure drop at both ends of the regenerator are increased, while the regenerator efficiency is decreased in the increase of womersley number. It is also found that the friction factor is increased as Reynolds number is increased. The comparison between the combination of the various regenerator materials and the homogeneous regenerator material shows that the regenerator efficiency can be enhanced with the proper combination of various regenerator materials even though the averaged porosity of the regenerator is same.

  • The present study numerically investigated the deformation of the interface of two-phase fluids flow in a blast furnace. To simulate three-dimensional(3D) incompressible viscous two-phase flow in the furnace filled with the air and molten iron, the volume of fluid(VOF) method based on the finite volume method has been utilized. In addition, the porous medium with the porosity has been considered as the bed of the particles such as cokes and char etc. For the comparison, the single phase flow and the two-phase flow without the porosity have been simulated. The two-phase flow without porosity condition revealed the smooth parabolic profile of the free surface near the outlet. However, the free surface under the porosity condition formed the viscous finger when the free surface was close to the outlet. This viscous finger accelerated the velocity of the free surface falling and the outflow velocity of the fluids near the outlet.
