  • The ultimate objective of our experiment is to obtain the precise distribution of temperature in malignant tumors occurring in cerebral parenchyme of human beings when we will carry out interstitial hyperthermia in the near future. To achieve this purpose, first of all, it is necessary to make an attempt at performing interstitial hyperthermia in vivo under the similar condition of human beings. Therefore, we chose cats as materials much alike tissue characteristics of human beings. Moreover, it is also necessary to get the basic data from dynamic phantom in order to standardize and compare results obtained from interstitial hyperthermia carried out in cats. By having performed these experiments we got the following results. 1) On doing interstitial hyperthermia with 915 MHz microwave, the possible treated volume was 2 cm by 2 cm by 6 cm according to $50\%$ specific absorption rate (SAR). 2) The distribution of temperature within non-circulated static phantom was much the same as power density in air, but we observed that the temperature, within $5\~10$ minutes, rose to more higher than $55^{\circ}C$ not measured with Ga-As fiberoptic thermistor which was not impeded by microwave after performing interstitial hyperthermia. 3) Within dynamic phantom in which normal saline was circulating, temperature reached steady state which was maintained for more than 45 minutes through transit period in 5 minutes after starting interstitial hyperthermia. 4) When we interrupted circulation in the dynamic phantom, we observed that temperature rose to the same level as in the static phantom. 5) We could carry out interstitial hyperthermia safely when we used the generating power below 5 watts. Abrupt interruption of circulation caused a rapid increase in temperature. Times taking to rise to maximum $55^{\circ}C$ were 15.2 minutes (SE 0.4),9.7 minutes (SE 0.3), and 6.3 min-utes (SE 0.4) respectively with generating powers of 5,10, and 15 watts.

  • Many recent studies have concentrated upon the radiative effects of atmospheric aerosols. Though their scattering and absorption of radiation, aerosols can also induce some other important environment effects. In this study, new radiation code and aerosol data within Atmosphere General Circulation Model (AGCM) is used to assess the aerosol radiative forcing and to analyze relative climate effects. The new Kangnung National University AGCM Stratospheric-15 (KNU AGCM ST15) was integrated by using two sets of radiative effect of aerosols: CTRL as not a radiative effect of aerosols and AERO as a radiative effect of aerosols. Two cases show the difference of net shortwave radiation budget at top-of-atmosphere (TOA) is found to be about $-3.4Wm^{-2}$, at the surface (SFC) is about $-5.6Wm^{-2}$. Consequently the mean atmospheric absorption due to aerosol layer in global is about $2.2Wm^{-2}$. This result confirms the existence of a negative forcing due to the direct effect of aerosols at the surface and TOA in global annual mean. In addition, it is found that cooling over at the surface air temperature due to radiative effect of aerosols is about $0.17^{\circ}C$. It is estimated that radiative forcing of the net upward longwave radiation taken as the indirect effect of aerosol is much smaller than that of the direct effect as there is about $0.2Wm^{-2}$ of positive forcing both at TOA and at SFC. From this study, It made an accurate estimation of considering effect of aerosols that is negative effect. This may slow the rate of projected global warming during the $21^{st}$ century.

  • Due to the demand of the cold neutron flux in the neutron science and beam utilization technology, the cold neutron source (CNS) has been constructed and operating in the nuclear research reactor all over the world. The majority of the heat load removal scheme in the CNS is two-phase thermosiphon using the liquid hydrogen as a moderator. The CNS moderates thermal neutrons through a cryogenic moderator, liquid hydrogen, into cold neutrons with the generation of the nuclear heat load. The liquid hydrogen in a moderator cell is evaporated for the removal of the generated heat load from the neutron moderation and flows upward into a heat exchanger, where the hydrogen gas is liquefied by the cryogenic helium gas supplied from a helium refrigeration system. The liquefied hydrogen flows down to the moderator cell. To keep the required liquid hydrogen stable in the moderator cell, the CNS consists of an in-pool assembly (IPA) connected with the hydrogen system to handle the required hydrogen gas, the vacuum system to create the thermal insulation, and the helium refrigeration system to provide the cooling capacity. If one of systems is running out of order, the operating research reactor shall be tripped because the integrity of the CNS-IPA is not secured under the full power operation of the reactor. To prevent unscheduled reactor shutdown during a long time because the research reactor has been operating with the multi-purposes, the introduction of the standby cooling system (STS) can be a solution. In this presentation, the design considerations are considered how to design the STS satisfied with the following objectives: (a) to keep the moderator cell less than 350 K during the full power operation of the reactor under loss of the vacuum, loss of the cooling power, loss of common electrical power, or loss of instrument air cases; (b) to circulate smoothly helium gas in the STS circulation loop; (c) to re-start-up the reactor within 1 hour after its trip to avoid the Xenon build-up because more than certain concentration of Xenon makes that the reactor cannot start-up again; (d) to minimize the possibility of the hydrogen-oxygen reaction in the hydrogen boundary.

  • Cool-down performance after soaking is important because it affects passenger's thermal comfort. The cooling capacity of HVAC system determines initial cool down performance in most cases, the performance is also affected by location, and shape of panel vent, indoor seat arrangement. Therefore, optimal indoor designs are required in developing a new car. In this paper, initial cool down performance is predicted by CFD(computational fluid dynamics) analysis. Experimental time-averaging temperature data are used as inlet boundary condition. For more reliable analysis, real vehicle model and human FE model are used in grid generation procedure. Thermal and aerodynamic characteristics on re-circulation cool vent mode are investigated using CFX 12.0. Thermal comfort represented by PMV(predicted mean vote) is evaluated using acquired numerical data. Temperature and velocity fields show that flow in passenger's compartment after soaking is considerably unstable at the view point of thermodynamics. Volume-averaged temperature is decreased exponentially during overall cool down process. However, temperature monitored at different 16 spots in CFX-Solver shows local variation in head, chest, knee, foot. The cooling speed at the head and chest nearby panel vent are relatively faster than at the knee and foot. Horizontal temperature contour shows asymmetric distribution because of the location of exhaust vent. By evaluating the passenger's thermal comfort, slowest cooling region is found at the driver's seat.

  • This study was conducted to verify the simulation model through the drying test, and investigate effect of factors, such as temperature of drying air, airflow rate, and velocity of the airflow, on the drying. The low temperature drying simulation model was developed based on the circulation dry simulation model presented by Keum et al. (1987), and by modifying low temperature thin layer drying model, equilibrium moisture content model, latent heat of vaporization model, and crack ratio prediction model. The heat pump and experimental dryer with a capacity of 150kg were used for the test. The RMSE between the predicted and measured value was 0.27% (drying temperature), 0.15% (crack ratio), and 2.08% (relative humidity), so the relevance of the model was verified. In addition, the effect of drying temperature, airflow rate, and velocity of the airflow on the drying was examined. The experimental results showed that the crack ratio at drying temperature of $25{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ was allowable. Moreover, at below $30^{\circ}C$, variation of the crack ratio was slight, but drying time was delayed. Given these results, the drying temperature of over $30^{\circ}C$ was effective. As the airflow rate increased, required energy dramatically increased. Whereas drying rate slowly increased, so loss of drying efficiency was caused. Considering these results, the dryer needed to be designed and adjusted to lower than $30\;m^3/min{\cdot}ton$. As velocity of the airflow increased, required drying energy increased when the velocity of the airflow was over $5\;m^3$/hr, while crack ratio and drying rate showed little variation.

  • The status of pulmonary circulation is regarded with utmost importance for the successful Fontan operation. The absence of unilateral pulmonary artery leads to decreased pulmonary vascular bed and elevated pulmonary vascular resistance which are the risk factors for Fontan operation. A 9-year-8-month-old female patient diagnosed as tricuspid atresia, pulmonary atresia with absent left pulmonary artery flow, received extracardiac conduit Fontan operation using 18 mm Gore-Tex graft. She was discharged on twenty sixth postoperative day with arterial $O_2$ saturation of $70\%$ on room air. On last follow up at 14 months after the operation, she was clinically well with $O_2$ saturation of $91\%$.

  • As the development of high efficiency and high flux density LEDs, the trend of illumination lamp industry transfers from conventional-lamps to the LED-lamps. For energy efficiencies, LED lamps are superior to the conventional lamps, but they have heat problems. Especially, the heat problems are severe for the high luminance lamps. They degrade the soldering point of the metal PCB, and shorten the life cycle of LEDs. So, the solution of the heat sinking is very important to develop high luminance LED lamps. This study suggested a new method to solve the heat problems for high luminance LED lamps, and developed a LED lamp which has 1200W power. In this study, a water jacket is installed to the LED lamp, and the cooing water is circulated by a water pump.

  • In many recent studies, a variety of environmental control system for practical gardening facilities such as facility house and plant factory have been proposed. However, the plants have been exposed to growth disorder and disease and pest injury because the temperature and humidity have not properly controlled so far. Therefore, a lot of damage of farmers have been reported. The air circulation fan and industrial dehumidifier have been currently utilized as the countermeasures, but they do not meet the expectation. In this study, the growth phase of each plant is recognized by using cycle-by-cycle plants growth recogniztion algorithm to provide optimal environment according to the growth phases of each plant.he productivity can be raised by using cycle-by-cycle plant growth recognition monitoring system because it optimally controls the environment by cycle that is required for plant growth.

  • The purpose of this research was to examine the possibility on the recycling of foodwaste leachate as external carbon sources using microbubble. The following operating conditions were selected: pressurizing tank 3 bar, circulation flow rate 3.65 LPM, and air flow rate 0.3 LPM with batch type. Microbubble contact time of 18 hours is optimal time to satisfy the recycling of foodwaste leachate as external carbon sources with batch type. HRT 18 hours came up to standard for external carbon sources, except for T-P concentration with continuous type. Coagulants need to be used for removal of dissolved phosphorus concentration by more than 88.5% of the total phosphorus concentration. The VFA was influenced by the organic decomposition rate and the concentration in the aerobic condition. It was considered that the VFA was needed for selection the optimal HRT or the addition of acid fermentation process in order to meet recycling standard of foodwaste leachate.

  • Contemporary hospital has more and more extension because the growth and change of hospital has to respond the various needs. For expanding, the sky bridge(sky walk) becomes one of the method to interconnect two or more buildings on the air. Sometimes the designers don't know exactly how the sky bridge works after construction. Beyond the role of interconnecting two buildings, the role of sky bridge is transformed the main axis of pedestrian in the whole hospital organization. This scope of analysis is about the sky bridge of Hanyang University hospital. The first method is the investigation of the utilization in this time. The second is the analysis of design drawings got form the designing of the past(1994-1998). From this analysis, the conclusions are followings.;The designer who wants to apply the sky bridge should more consider about, 1) how the sky bridge impacts the whole spatial system such as the pedestrian, patients, physicians, service's facilities etc. 2) what the inside of sky bridge has something such as natural light, ventilation, and the height, depth, width of aisle, the sign for seeking orientation. etc. In future the research relating sky bridge should be studied some hospital as well as one hospital for comparing the characteristics of the concepts and organizations
