  • This study was carried out to get agronomic information about the tobacco culture in paddy soil where incidence of grey tobacco leaves used to appearly uptake of iron, manganese and chlorine due to soil acidity and high water level. Application of lime to paddy soil(pH5.4-5.6) reduced content of iron, manganese known as proceeding materials giving rise to variegated grey tobacco after curing, compared with non-treatment. Grey leaves were found mainly at lower and middle stalk positions, and incidence of grey tobacco was lowered by application of lime in the well drained field but was not affected by level of fertilizer application. Amendment of soil acidity by lime tended to decrease chlorine and manganese content in leaves. Nicotine and mangenese content of leaves were lowered by reduction of one-quarter fertilizer level. In case of lime treatment, increase of yield reached to 4-6% comparing with those of non-treatment but price per kg was not affected. Reduction of N fertilizer level to three-quarters had the equal yield but high quality of leaf comparing with standard fertilization in paddy field.

  • To investigate the factors of the improvement of cultivation methods according to the plant type, three Burley tobacco cultivars were done. Experiments on the variability of plant type and factors representing the productivity and quality of the cultivar were subsequently carried out in relation to different fertilizer levels. Results are summarized as below. Use of more fertilizer resulted in higher plant height and longer leaf length but smaller mean leaf inclination(MLI). The horizontal leaf area distribution became greater in parts distal to the stem and the vertical leaf area distribution became greater in lower half than in upper half as the amount of fertilizer applied was increased. Br. 49 was the largest but Br. 21 and NTN 77 were similar with respect to both CGR and NAR. The yield was greater in larger MLI cultivars. These three characteristics became greater when the tobacco were heavier in the cultivars of larger MLI and increased with higher amount of fertilizer. Harvest index became greater as the amount of fertilizer decreased but not significantly differ among the cultivars. Total nitrogen content and nitrate - form nitrogen content were greater, more amount of fertilizer, and larger MLI cultivar plots. Total nitrogen content was higher in upper leaves. The filling power of tobacco leaves decreased but combustibility of leaves showed not significant trend as fertilizer application level increased.

  • Experiments on the variability of plant type and factors representing the productivity and quality of the cultivars were subsequently carried out in relation to different plant density. Results are summarized as below. The higher was the plant density, the greater was the plant height and mean leaf inclination(MLI). As the plant density increased, the horizontal leaf area distribution became greater in proximal to the stem in NTN 77 and Br.49 but evenly in distal part in Br.21. Meanwhile, in terms of vertical leaf area distribution, it was decreased much more in middle and lower leaves than in upper in NTN 77 and Br.49 although it steadily decreased in any part of the plant in Br.21. Br.49 was the largest but Br.21 and NTN 77 were similar with respect to both CGR and NAR. The yield was greater in larger MLI cultivars(NTN 77>Br.49>Br.21). These three characteristics became greater when the tobacco were planted more densely in the field. Dry leaf weight and dry matter weight per plant were heavier in the larger MLI and increased with lower plant density. Total nitrogen content was greater in lower plant density and larger MLI cultivar. The plant density increases filling power seems to be enhanced regardless to the plant type. There was no discernible tendency on combustibility according to the plant density or plant type.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the basic informations on the selection for the early and high-yielding lines in $F_2$ populations of wheat. Two combinations such as Olmil-Saemil cross and Naphal-Cheonggemil cross and their eight populations were used and genetic parameters of genetic variances and path-coefficients for agronomic traits mainly in $F_2$ populations were analyzed. Genetic coefficient of variability in Olmil-Saemil cross was higher in harvest index, grain number, grain yield and plant height in decreasing order, but in Naphal-Cheonggemil cross harvest index, plant height, and 1,000-grain weight were higher in order. Heading and maturing dates, plant height, and harvest index showed high hertability (0.525-0.808) in both crosses, but very low heritabilities were observed in grain numbers per panicle and yield. In both crosses, genetic advances(%) was higher in heading and maturing stage, but lowest in yield. High genetic advance was obtained in 1,000-grain weight of Naphal-Cheonggemil cross. The highly significant correlations between yield and panicle number, yield and grain number per panicle were obtained, and the highest direct effect on yield was obtained in panicle number followed by grain number per panicle number.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate major agronomical characterization and phenol compound contents, Xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity (XO), Catalase activity, Superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical sacvenging activity were analyzed in colored waxy corns. The mean of stem height and ear length were 248.8 cm and 18.6 cm, respectively. The pericarp thickness in CNU108 $(30.3{\mu}m)$ was thinner than other hybrids. The period of tasseling days in CNU69 and CNU202 were very shorter than other hybrids (59 days). 100-kernel weight of CNU50 was 35.6 g and heavier than the others. The antioxidant activities such as xanthin oxidase (XO), catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were higher in CNU70 and CNUI 38. Especially highest EDA (electron donating ability) in DPPH radical scavenging effect was 94.8% and 94.6% in CNU160 and CNU193, respectively. In the results, the antioxidant enzyme activity and antioxidant acticity were higher in CNU109 and CNU 34 hybrids. The hybrids, CNU34, CNU70, CNU108, CNU 138 and CNU193 may be considered higher functional color waxy corn.

  • The experiment was carried out to study the influence of planting space and fertilizer application levels on some agronomic characters and yield in newly released semi-dwarf soybeans, Paldalbong and Dankyungkong. The number of branches per plant was not reduced by planting space from 60${\times}$10cm 30${\times}$15cm. These Semi-dwarf soybeans had good adaptability on high planting density. The number of pods per node on the main stem was different according to the planting space in Dankyungkong, but it was similar in Paldalkong except planting space 20${\times}$10cm. Regardless of planting densities and varieties, the number of grains per pod on upper node of the main stem was large. Coefficient of variation of pods and grains per node in the middle part of the main stem was small. The number of grains per plant was decreased in high planting density compared to low planting density, but the number of harvested plant per unit area was increased. Optimum planting space was 25${\times}$10cm in both varieties. The ability of nodulation was bigger in Dankyungkong than in Paldalkong.

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate performance and carcass characteristics of 40 crossbred young bulls ($Zebu{\times}European$) finished in a feedlot under two roughage sources (Bermuda grass hay or sorghum silage) with or without the addition of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae). The bulls were 20 months old, their initial average weight was 356 kg and they were allocated into four groups of ten animals. The experimental diets were Bermuda grass, Bermuda grass+yeast, sorghum silage and sorghum silage +yeast. Animal performance and carcass characteristics were not influenced by roughage source or yeast addition. The average daily weight gain was 1.50 kg, dry matter intake (DMI) was 11.1 kg/d, DMI as percentage of liveweight was 2.60% and feed dry matter conversion was 7.70. The mean dressing percentage was 52.0% and hot carcass weight was 268 kg. Carcass conformation was classified between good-minus to good. Carcass length (137 cm), leg length (72.9 cm) and cushion thickness (26.6 cm) were not influenced by treatments. The average fat thickness was 3.80 mm and the Longissimus muscle area was 66.9 $cm^{2}$. The classification of color, texture and marbling were slightly dark red to red, fine and slight-minus to light-typical, respectively. The mean percentage of bone, muscle and fat in the carcass was 15.5%, 62.3% and 22.5%, respectively. Yeast addition increased ${\gamma}$-linolenic fatty acid (0.15 vs. 0.11%) deposition. Bermuda grass hay increased deposition of ${\alpha}$-linolenic (0.49 vs. 0.41%), arachidonic (2.30 vs. 1.57%), eicosapentaenoic (0.41 vs. 0.29%), docosapentaenoic (0.80 vs. 0.62%), docosahexaenoic (0.11 vs. 0.06%) and n-3 fatty acids, and reduced n-6: n-3 ratio in meat, when compared to sorghum silage treatments. The treatments had no effect on saturated fatty acids (49.5%), polyunsaturated fatty acids (11.8%), n-6 fatty acids (9.87%), n-3 (1.61%) and PUFA:SFA ratio (0.24). Monounsaturated fatty acid levels were higher on sorghum silage (40.7 vs. 37.7%). The addition of yeast caused higher n-6: n-3 ratio (7.28 vs. 5.70) than treatments without yeast.

  • Eveuadies 71' kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was grown at five plant densities (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 plants per hill; 16,000, 32,000, 48,000, 64,000 and 80,000 plants/10a) from April 13 to October 8, 2001 in Jeju island to determine influence of plant number per hill on agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality. As plant density increased from 1 to 5 plants per hill, the plant height averaged across two harvests increased 176 to 185 cm. Compared with the plant density of two plants per hill, the plant height decreased at higher plant densities (183, 180, and 166 cm for 3, 4 and 5 plants per hill). The highest yield of fresh forage (114.6 MT/ha), dry matter (17.3 MT/ha), crude protein (2.33 MT/ha), and total digestible nutrients (TDN) (9.21 MT/ha) was obtained at 2 plants per hill. As plant density increased from 1 to 5 plants per hill, crude protein, ether extract, nitrogen free extract, and TDN contents increased from 13.1 to 15.4%, 3.0 to 3.7%, 20.1 to 23.2% and 41.1 to 45.4%, respectively, while crude fiber and crude ash contents decreased from 41.2 to 34.9% and 9.4 to 8.2%, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to select the optimum herbicide combination on agronomic characteristics, dry matter yield, nutritive values and weed control of the silage corn at Daekwanryong branch(altitude 800m a.s.1.) of National Livestock Research Institute from 2001 to 2002. The treatments consisted of control, metolachlor, thiobencarb+linuron, pendimethalin, pendimethalin+linuron, propisochlor, nicosulfuron, propisochlor+nicosulfuron, and non treatment. The plant height and ear height of corn were no significant different among herbicide combination. However, the highest dry matter(DM) and ear rate of silage corn were observed with nicosulfuron treatment; 31.4% and 52.7%, respectively. Also, Dry matter yield of silage corn was the highest of 16,503kg/ha with propisochlor+nicosulfuron(P<0.05). The control of annual weeds was the greatest of 96.4% in the plots of propisochlor+nicosulfuron application. These results indicate that propisochlor+nicosulfuron treatment would be the optimum combination for dry matter yield, weed control and nutritive value of silage corn in alpine area.
