  • Purpose: Meager research has been carried out to determine the effectiveness of the token economy among patients behaving violently in mental hospitals. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Short-Term Token Economy (STTE) on violent behavior among chronic psychiatric in-patients. Methods: A nonequivalent control group design method was utilized. Participants in an experimental group (n=22) and control group (n=22) took part in this study from January to April, 2008. Observation on aggressive behavior among male in-patients in one hospital as a baseline was made during the week before the behavior modification program and measurement of aggressive behavior was done using the Overt Aggression Scale (OAS), which includes verbal attacks, property damage and physical attacks. Results: The aggressive behavior scores of the experimental group decreased, those of the control group, scores showed an increase after the eight-week behavior modification program utilizing STTE. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that STTE is effective in reducing the incidence of aggressive behavior among male in-patients in psychiatric hospitals. The outcome of this study should be helpful in reducing the use of coercive measures or psychoactive medication in controlling the violent behavior among in-patients in hospitals.

  • BACKGROUND. Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) is a destructive periodontal disease that can develop in young age. Only a few cases of full mouth rehabilitation, using dental implants, have been reported in a patient with aggressive periodontitis. CASE DESCRIPTION. This clinical report describes the treatment procedures and results of full mouth rehabilitation in a patient with aggressive periodontitis. After all teeth were extracted, 6 implants were placed in the maxilla and mandible, respectively. Fixed detachable implant prostheses were made. The patient was satisfied with the final results. She was followed for 10 months postloading. CLINICAL IMPLICATION. For a long-term success, continuous maintenance care is critical, as the contributing factors of the disease (such as immune factors or periodontal pathogens) may not be controlled adequately.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore whether there are gender differences in the influences of paternal parenting behavior on the relational aggression of adolescents and to examine the mediating effects of internal attribution and normative beliefs about aggressive behaviors. Methods: This study assessed 492 fifth to sixth graders from an elementary school (237 males and 255 females). Results: The results of this study were as follows: First, the effect of paternal affectionate parenting behavior on girls' reactive aggression was partially mediated by internal attribution. Second, the effect of paternal coercive parenting behavior on boys' proactive aggression was completely mediated by normative beliefs about aggressive behavior. Third, girls' proactive aggression was partially mediated by normative beliefs about aggressive behavior. Conclusion: These results suggest the need to further examine relational aggression and to help children gain positive relationships with peers.

  • This study explored mediating effects of children's emotional regulation between maternal parenting behaviors and children's aggressive/prosocial behaviors. The participants were 1,187 4th, 5th, 6th grade children and their mothers from two elementary schools in Korea. The Maternal Parenting Behaviors Scale(Kim, 2006), the Emotional Regulation Scale(Lee, 1997), and a peer-nomination measure(Crick, 1995; Crick & Grotpeter, 1995) were used. Collected data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson's productive correlation and regression using SPSS(Ver 12.0). Findings revealed that children's self-emotional regulation mediated the effects of mother's physical punishment on children's aggressive behaviors, while children's other-emotional regulation mediated the effect of mother's warm-encouragement, mediation-supervision, and inconsistency on children's prosocial behaviors. In conclusion, children's emotional regulation mediates the effects of maternal parenting behaviors on children's aggressive/prosocial behaviors.

  • The relation of children's stress-coping styles to Risk of Internet Gaming Addiction(RIGA) was examined in 662 4th, 5th and 6th grade subjects. Results showed that active coping styles were negatively but aggressive and passive/avoidant coping styles were positively related to RIGA. In male students, coping styles of "active" and "passive/avoidant", "aggressive" influenced RIGA factors of "maladaptive behaviors" and "negative emotional experience". In female students, coping styles of seeking social support related positively to RIGA; coping styles of "active", "passive/avoidant", and "aggressive" influenced "maladaptive behaviors", "negative emotional experience", and coping styles of "active" and "passive/avoidant", "seeking social support" influenced "low academic attitude", RIGA factors, respectively. Coping styles of "active", "passive/avoidant", "aggressive", and "seeking-social-support" influenced "psychological absorption and fixation".

  • A 23-year-old female with aggressive periodontitis was treated using dental implants and LAVA system. The severely compromised teeth were extracted irrespective of initial conservative periodontal treatment. An implant-supported overdenture with 4 implants was fabricated for the maxilla and all-ceramic restorations for the mandible. Esthetic and functional goals were achieved with team approach involving periodontists and prosthodontists. This case report describes a treatment procedure for a generalized aggressive periodontitis patient with severe bone resorption.

  • This study explored the antecedent variables associated with variability in toddler's aggressive behavior. The subjects were 182 toddlers(101 boys and 81 girls) and their mothers. Data were collected via questionnaires. The main results of this study were as follows ; First, aggression was significantly correlated with toddler age, but not with gender. Mother's parenting was related to boy's aggression, whereas both temperament and parenting were significantly related to girls' aggressive behavior. However, day-care variabes were not the significantly associated with toddler's aggression. Second, regression analyses revealed the interaction effect of child temperament and parenting, after controlling for main effects.

  • This study investigates aggressive children's perceptions of their social acceptance in conjunction with peer ratings of social acceptance. The subjects were 520 children in the fifth through sixth grades. Children completed questionnaires that assessed self-perceptions of social acceptance. In addition, they completed peer nominations that assessed peer victimization, aggression, and peer acceptance, while their teachers rated children's externalizing problems. The results suggest that aggressive children's self-perceived social acceptance is inflated in relation to the ratings of their peers. For aggressive-rejected children, a highly positive self-perception was shown to be not a protective factor, but rather a defensive posture that places the children at added risk.

  • Generalized aggressive periodontitis cause intrabony pocket, loss of teeth, and severe alveolar bone defect. As a result, pathologic tooth migration occurs and esthetic problem happens according to this, especially on the anterior teeth of maxilla. The purpose of this study was to assess the multidisciplinary treatment including periodontics, orthodontics and prosthetics of a patient caused by generalized aggressive periodontitis. This study presents a case using full mouth periodontal treatment, immediate orthodontic treatment for 5 months, implantation with guided bone regeneration and free gingival graft, and prosthetic treatment. Treatments took totally 14 months. Periodontal indicators such as probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing, tooth mobility improved. Also, the patient was satisfied with the esthetic and functional improvement.
