  • The characteristics of the biaxial flexural tensile strength of concretes was compared to that of the uniaxial strength. The uniaxial and biaxial strengths in this study were obtained from the classical modulus of rupture test and the biaxial flexural test recently developed by Zi and Oh and Zi et al., respectively. Three different sizes were considered to investigate the effect of the size of aggregates. To estimate the stochastic aspect of the strength, 32 specimens were used for each test. The average biaxial flexural fracture strength was about 20% greater than the uniaxial test. At the same time, the coefficient of variation for the biaxial test was 18% greater than the uniaxial test. This means that the probability of the biaxial cracking can be greater than the uniaxial cracking.

  • In this study, the high qualify recycled fine aggregate manufacturing system by the drying specific gravity separation method was evaluated. For the evaluation of the performance of the recycled aggregate, the engineering properties and durability of recycled aggregate has been tested. From the test results, the quality of recycled fing aggregates was improved by high quality recycled fine aggregate manufacturing system and satisfied with the quality standards of KS and JASS 5. Also, compressive and tensile strengths of recycled concrete show no critical difference caused by recycled fine aggregate replacement ratio. However, durability such as carbonation depth chloride ion penetration depth and drying shrinkage shows more deterioration than the concrete without recycled fine aggregate

  • The distresses of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) was recently reported at highway cement concrete pavement in Korea, which showed typical cracking and spalling patterns of ARS. Korea is was no longer safe zone against ASR, needding to find a control methodology against ASR. The purpose of this research was to provide a control methodology against ASR using mineral admixtures through a series of laboratory test program. Laboratory works included the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) by ASTM C 1260 regulation with five types of aggregate and three types of mineral admixtures (fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and silica fume). The result of ASTM C 1260 test for five types of aggregates without mineral admixtures showed that Siltstone and Mudstone were found to be "reactive." Tuff and Andesite-1 were found to be "possiblely reactive." In case of concrete mixed with 10, 20, and 30% fly ash, all specimens except Mudstone mixed with 10% FA were found to be "non-reactive". In cases of concrete mixed with 30, 40, and 50% ground granulated blast-furnace slag and 5, 7.5, and 10% silica fume, all specimens were found to be "non-reactive." These results could be selectively applied in constructions in Korea.

  • This study established the standard recommended values and expansion fracture threshold values for the content of steel slag in controlled low-strength materials (CLSM) to ensure the appropriate use of steel slag aggregates and the prevention of abnormal expansion. The steel slags used in this study included basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag and desulfurization slag (DS), which replaced 5-50% of natural river sand by weight in cement mixtures. The steel slag mortars were tested by high-temperature ($100^{\circ}C$) curing for 96 h and autoclave expansion. The results showed that the effects of the steel slag content varied based on the free lime (f-CaO) content. No more than 30% of the natural river sand should be replaced with steel slag to avoid fracture failure. The expansion fracture threshold value was 0.10%, above which there was a risk of potential failure. Based on the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, the high-temperature catalysis resulted in the immediate extrusion of peripheral hydration products from the calcium hydroxide crystals, leading to a local stress concentration and, eventually, deformation and cracking.

  • In this study, as one of solutions associated with the shortage of treatment area of industrial waste and the containment of its harmful components, the bottom ash which is known to be by-products of thermoelectric power plant was selected and its applicability for aggregate of concrete mixture was measured. Hardness test, sieve analysis, water-absorption test and SEM analysis were carried out to investigate the possibility of using bottom ash as a replacement of coarse and fine aggregate. Chemical analyses such as ignition loss test and X-ray incidence were carried out also. In addition, values for slump, strength, permeability, freeze and thaw, and carbonation were evaluated in terms of effects of replacement ratio of bottom ash. As the results, it was found that, though bottom ash is in short supply of fine particles and is in lack of cohesion, these problems can be solved by partially mixing with natural aggregates or improving in a process of production. In addition, bottom ash has not only advantage of durability but also acquirement of general compressive strengths in case that a certain proportion of natural aggregate is applied to mixture, in spite that unit water or chemical admixture should be increased to acquire good workability due to plenty of porosity.

  • Incorporation of wastes glass aggregate in mortar may cause crack and this may result in the strength reduction due to alkali-silica reaction(ASR) and expansion. The purposes of this study were to investigate the properties of alkali-silica expansion and strength loss through a series of experiments which had a main experimental variables such as waste glass aggregate contents, glass colors, fiber types, and fiber contents. The steel fibers and polypropylene fibers were used for constraining the ASR expansion and mortar cracking. From the result, green waste glass was more suitable than brown one because of low expansion. And in this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum content can not be found. Also, when used the fibers with waste glass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. Specially, adding 1.5 vol.% of steel fiber to 20% of waste glass, the expansion ratio was reduced by 40% and flexural strength was developed by up to 110% comparing with only waste glass(80$\^{C}$ H$_2$O curing).

  • Recycled aggregate by the recycling construction waste has a lot of advantage such as the developing the alternative resource and protecting of environment. However, recycled aggregate is used as the low quality grade, because it is difficult to remove old mortar from aggregate. To use the recycled aggregate as high quality grade, it is important to develop the technology to produce the high quality recycled aggregate. To manufacture the high quality recycled aggregate, old mortar attached on the aggregates should be removed efficiently. Therefore, in this study, we suggested the optimum condition to remove old mortar effectively using sulfuric acid and low speed wet rotary mill for high quality recycled fine aggregate. The results shows that the recycled aggregate satisfy on the standards of KS F 2573 in density, absorption and solid volume, when adequate condition of sulfuric mole ratio and aggregate ratio are make.

  • In this study, we analyzed the problems of existing construction waste shredding technology to diagnose the problems of low quality recycled aggregates and to develop a new mortar peeling technique to produce high-quality recycled coarse aggregate for concrete. The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness of mortar peeling technique by doing simulation prior to on-site application and to check the quality properties of recycled coarse aggregate produced by applying a mortar peeling technique. We manufactured and installed High speed Rotating Grinder on-site and analyzed the correlation between mortar adhesion amount, dry density and water absorption rate of recycled coarse aggregate.

  • Together with neuronal loss, the existence of insoluble inclusions of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) in the brain is widely accepted as a hallmark of synucleinopathies including Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple system atrophy, and dementia with Lewy body. Because the α-syn aggregates are deeply involved in the pathogenesis, there have been many attempts to demonstrate the mechanism of the aggregation and its potential causative factors including post-translational modifications (PTMs). Although no concrete conclusions have been made based on the previous study results, growing evidence suggests that modifications such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination can alter α-syn characteristics to have certain effects on the aggregation process in PD; either facilitating or inhibiting fibrillization. In the present work, we reviewed studies showing the significant impacts of PTMs on α-syn aggregation. Furthermore, the PTMs modulating α-syn aggregation-induced cell death have been discussed.

  • Recently, attempts of replacing some of natural aggregate with mix of low quality aggregate are carried out for stable supply of aggregate. However, low quality aggregate such as recycled aggregate produced during the disposal process of construction wastes and by-product aggregate produced by industrial activities has problem of failing to comply to KS Standards. Therefore, we have compared fundamental properties of concrete by using granite crushed aggregate, recycled aggregate, blast furnace and electric arc furnace slag aggregate for effective utilization of lacking aggregate resources. As the result, slump in case of mixed use of aggregate was increased 0~10% compared to single use. Therefore, it is judged to be economically advantageous as it can expect effects in unit quantity or reduction of SP agent. Compressive strength in case of mixed use of aggregate was increased 0~10% compared to single use as it filled internal crevice of concrete with continuous particle size distribution. Accordingly, if we utilize by satisfying standard particle scope through mix of aggregate with different cause of formation in proper ratio, it was possible to confirm utility of mixed aggregate with demonstration of effects of increases of fluidity and compressive strength of concrete.
