Effects of Curing Method on the Mechanical Properties of Recycled Coarse Aggregate Concrete (양생방법에 따른 순환굵은골재 콘크리트의 강도특성)

  • Recently, Korea government prepared Act on facilitation of construction waste recycling in December 2003 for effective recycling of rapidly increasing construction wastes, and has enforced the Act on Jan. 2005. This Act limits the definition of recycled aggregates to the aggregates which obtained quality certificate and for this purpose, government has operated quality standard and certificate system of recycling aggregate. The objective of this experimental study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of recycled coarse aggregate concrete according to curing method by ready-mixed concrete. Compressive strength ratio of recycled aggregate concrete under air-dry curing/wet curing was $74{\sim}91%$. KCI code for conventional concrete overestimated elastic modulus for recycled coarse aggregate concrete.

  • This study evaluated the mechanical properties and alkali silica reaction of mortar according to the mixing ratio of waste glass. As a result, as the mixing ratio of the waste glass increased, the compressive and flexible strength of the mortar decreased due to the slip of aggregate, and the alkali-silica reaction(ASR) increased. So, it is considered that research is needed to prevent slip and ASR of the waste glass aggregate in order to use the waste glass as a fine aggregate for concrete.

  • In this paper, the properties of concrete used recycled aggregate are analyzed. The specimens are manufactured for the compressive strength of 210㎏/㎠ with recycled aggaregate ratio of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, respectivey. At curing 28days, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, dry-shrinkage, static modulus of elasticity and poission's ratio have been tested according to replacement ratio of recycled aggregate.

  • This paper presents the results of a study that investigated the influence of using recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) on the properties of pervious concrete (PC). The natural aggregate (NA) was replaced by RCA and RAP in the PC with replacement levels of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% by the total weight of NA, respectively. In addition to incorporating RAP and RCA in the same mixes with replacement levels of: (1) 20% RAP and 80% RCA; (2) 60% RAP and 40% RCA; and (3) 80% RAP and 20% RCA. Water permeability, thermal conductivity, density, porosity, void content, and compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strengths were studied in this paper. The results showed that using RCA, RAP, and (RAP-RCA) enhanced the properties of PC in general and improved the mechanical properties significantly in particular. The optimum mix was reported to be the 60% RAP and 40% RCA. Accordingly, the RAP has the potential to be used in PC in order to reduce the negative impact of RAP on the human health and environment.

Engineering Properties of High Strength Concrete Using Lime Stone Recycling Fine Aggregate (석회암 순환잔골재를 사용한 고강도 콘크리트의 공학적 특성)

  • This study investigates the engineering properties of concrete incorporating lime stone crushed fine aggregate(Ls), which has been abandoned about 20% of total production due to the low purity. Test results showed that increase of Ls had favorable fluidity and slightly decreased air content. Bleeding capacity of all specimens was not appeared as those were high strength mixture proportion, but the specimens using more Ls accelerated initial and final setting. For the mechanical properties, specimens incorporating higher ratio of Ls, overall, resulted in increase of compressive strength, and exhibited very small inclined tendency in a dynamic elasticity modulus test In addition, for the durability properties, specimens incorporating higher Ls dramatically decreased a drying shrinkage and showed similar tendency in a frost & thaw test, as well as showing no more change in an accelerated neutralization test from the beginning. In conclusion, as it was confirmed in the experimental test, the high strength concrete applying Ls did not showed any problems in the aspects of engineering properties and mostly exhibited even more excellent quality than the specimens using natural fine aggregate.

  • There are many factors that affect on the flowing properties of high flowing concrete(HFC), which are fluidity, compactibility, non-segregation ability and fillingability. And because the aggregate which is one of the factors occupies high volume in concrete, it has a much effect on the properties of high flowing concrete according to its size, quality and quantity etc. This is an experimental study to analyze the effect of admixture and volume of coarse aggregate in concrete on the flowing properties of high flowing concrete. For this purpose, the kinds of admixture are fly-ash and blast furnace slag. Also volume of coarse aggregate in concrete are 280, 290, 300, 310, 320 $(\ell/m^3)$. The test of flowablity properties is slump-flow, Air content, V-lot, L-Flow. According to test results, it was found that the compactibility of HFC is more superior to use blast furnace slag than other, and according .to kind of admixture, most compatible volume of coarse are different. Also when used blast furnace slag, the volume of coarse are increased than used fly-ash.

  • Compared with the BF slag, the EAF slag has expansion due to the reaction with water and free CaO. Therefore it is specified in Concrete Specification that the FAP slag aggregated must not be used in concrete. Because of this reason it is unusual to use the EAF slag aggregate in concrete. The EAF slag aggregate treated with accelerated and water aging was comparatively satisfied with fundamental properties, which are specific gravity, unit weight, abrasion and immersion expansion ratio, as concrete aggregate. Therefore when we measured the compressive strength till 28 days, we found that the mortar and concrete replacing the natural aggregate with the EAF slag aggregate by 4 steps had better results than the concrete using the natural aggregate in a view of the compressive strength. But at 91 days, concrete using the EAF slag aggregate had no difference with it using the natural aggregate.

  • This study is to present empirical data about the needs for quality security of aggregate by randomly selecting aggregate from 4 major locations including A, B, C, D province in Korea, by investigating its quality status in terms of physical properties and particle distribution based on Korean industrial standards(KS). The test results indicated that wide variance in quality, and some of aggregate samples were far below the standard, still many of them are not satisfying KS standards. In addition, the current aggregate manufacturing process that does not include inspection of particle size distribution by sieving and fineness modulus, can induce a possibility of non-KS aggregate's distribution; this provide that the current status of aggregate quality security of Korea is seriously threatened. Thus, it is important to secure each aggregate's quality level under KS standards.

  • This study investigated effect of recycled fine aggregate quality on strength properties of concrete. Some investigations have been carried out to study the strength properties of recycled aggregate concrete. But these have some limitation due to small-scale test in the laboratory. Therefore concrete using this study were fabricated by ready-mix concrete. Variables were quality of recycled fine aggregate(high and low quality) and replacement ratio of 0%, 30%, 60%, 100%(high quality), 35, 70%(low quality). The change of air content of recycled aggregate concrete were similar to natural aggregate concrete. Replacement ratio of recycled aggregate was not necessarily correlated with compressive strength and modulus of rupture of recycled aggregate concrete.
