  • Free cash flow is known as a typical type of agency conflict between managers and shareholders in a firm. The insurance industry, which is not growing, is particularly susceptible to such excessive cash flow. We herein investigate the effects of stock ownership plans on reducing agency conflicts. We adopt undistributed cash flow to proxy free cash flow, and size, default risk, group membership, leverage, investment opportunity, and stock options are selected as explanatory variables. We find that stock option plans are effective(at a 10% level) in reducing free cash flow.

  • There have been many conflicts in Pyeongtaek-Dangjin Port among central government, metropolitan council, and cities over the jurisdiction of reclaimed port area, an international passenger terminal construction and a bridge between the port and Dangjin area. This study found out two causes for the conflicts in terms of governance. First, the current governance structure of Pyeongtaek-Dangjin port has high levels of conflict and disputes among stakeholder. Second, there is no leading agency which is responsible for the future development of the port. It is very important to decrease the possibility of conflict and to establish leading agency. Measures to decrease the likelihood of conflict include establishment of conflict resolution mechanism, the clarification of the facts and applicable law, mutual exchanges between stakeholder. Measures to establish a leading agency include the introduction of a single governance, establishment of Pyeongtaek-Dangjin Port Authority, central-local combined governance, and empowering PA to do all port management.

  • One of the most important things in channel of distribution is the management of intrachannel conflict. In this study, 1 tried to find out the major sources of conflict among distribution channel members of gasolin industry and home electronics industry which have two types of distribution channels - sales branch and agency. I also investigated how the level of conflict influences the business performance of the channel member. The results of the study showed that the imbalance of power, nonfulfillment of roles by manufacturers, nonfulfillment of roles by dealer, divergence in perceptions, intrachannel communication problem have positive relation but role clarity has negative relation with conflict. The results also indicate that the more power supplier exerts upon dealer, the less supplier and dealer practice their roles, and the more communications problem there is, there will be more conflict between channel members. I also analyzed the relationship between conflict and business performance and the result came out as expected: the more conflict there is the less business performance. Some difference was found between sales branch and agency on that aspect. Managerial implications and limitations of the study were also discussed.

  • In South Korea, as awareness of gender equality increased since the 1990s, policies for gender equality and social awareness of equality have been established. Until recently, however, the gap between men and women in social and economic activities has not reached the globally desired level and led to social conflict throughout the country. In this study, we analyze the content of online news comments to understand the public perception of gender equality and the details of gender conflict and to grasp the emergence and diffusion process of emerging issues on gender equality. We collected text data from the online news that included the word 'gender equality' posted from January 2012 to June 2017 and also collected comments on each selected news item. Through text mining and the temporal semantic network analysis, we tracked the changes in discourse on gender equality and conflict. Results revealed that gender conflicts are increasing in the online media, and the focus of conflict is shifting from 'position and role inequality' to 'opportunity inequality'.

  • Background: While the organizational factors that account for firefighters' burnout have been extensively explored, the individual factors related to how they regulate interpersonal conflicts and emotions remain to be investigated. Previous research has demonstrated the association between emotional intelligence and conflict management styles and burnout, but no study has looked at the interrelationships among these factors in high-risk sectors. The present exploratory study aimed to fill this research gap by investigating the relationships between conflict management style, emotional intelligence and burnout in a sample of firefighters. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 240 French firefighters. Measures comprised validated scales of conflict management styles, emotional intelligence and burnout. Results: Results showed that the integrating conflict style reduced burnout. They also revealed the effects of emotion regulation on burnout, whereby the awareness and management of one's own emotions reduced burnout. Moreover, awareness of one's own emotions moderated the relationship between integrating conflict resolution style and burnout, whereby the effect of integrating style on reduced burnout was higher when awareness of one's own emotions was high. Conclusion: These results reveal that strategies used by firefighters to regulate their emotions in order to meet the emotional demands specific to their job are important for reducing the emotional exhaustion component of burnout. Training programs for conflict and emotion management are needed to preserve the mental health of firefighters and ensure the safety of interventions.
