Adsorption and Antibacterial Properties of Metal Treated Activated Carbon (금속 처리된 활성탄소의 흡착과 항균특성)

  • The Ag-treated activated carbon was prepared by the impregnation of Ag on the home made activated carbon. We investigated the nitrogen adsorption property, surface structure, and antibacterial activity of the carbon. The BET surface areas of Ag impregnated activated carbon are distributed to $740-1112.2m^2/g$ region. The results of nitrogen adsorption property show that BET surface areas move gradually to lower value with increasing $AgNO_3$ mole concentration. From the SEM results, we observed window blocking effect for micropores of external surface of adsorbent by Ag impregnation. Escherichia coli which is a kind of colon bacillus was used as bacteria for antibacterial test. From these results, we also observed that activity increase gradually to larger range with increasing $AgNO_3$ mole ratio.

  • We studied the mechanical and magnetic properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductor with and without resin and Ag impregnation. Bulk YBCO superconductor was manufactured with the top-seeded melt-growth method. Typical sample of 40mm X 20mm X 3mm was made and then 8 holes with 0.5mm diameter were drilled arbitrally. Epoxy resin and $AgNO_3$ were systematically added into the holes to compare the mechanical and magnetic properties of YBCO superconductor before and after reinforcement of resin and Ag. Based on the result of 3 point bending, bending strength increased with increasing amounts of resin and carbon nano-tube. However, it was found that the levitation force decreased after making hole, compared with virgin sample without hole.

  • Bulk YBCO 초전도체는 top-seeded melt-growth 방법으로 제조되었다. YBCO bulk는 Epoxy resin과 $AgNO_3$를 보강해 초전도체의 기계적 강도를 향상하고자 하였다. Epoxy resin은 보강 재료인 STYCAST 2850-FT와 경화제인 CATALYST 24LV 를 100:5 비율로 혼합하여 제조한 후 mould에 넣고 $66^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 열처리 하였다 (rotary pump로 진공 분위기 조성). $AgNO_3$$350^{\circ}C$에서 2시간, $450^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 열처리 하여 Ag와 $NO_3$의 분리 후 YBCO bulk에 Ag가 보강되도록 하였다. Epoxy resin 과 분리된 Ag는 YBCO bluk의 crack과 void에 침투되는 것을 SEM과 광학현미경을 통해 관찰할 수 있었다. Three point bending test를 이용하여 보강 전후의 YBCO bulk의 기계적 강도를 측정하였다. 보강 후의 YBCO bluk의 기계적 강도는 보강 전에 비해 향상된 결과를 확인할 수 있었고, Epoxy resin과 $AgNO_3$를 보강한 YBCO는 기계적 강도 향상에 높은 신뢰성을 보이고 있다.

Studies on the Emission control of methanol engine exhaust with modified 3-way catalyst at cold start condition (변형된 삼원촉매에 의한 저온시동조건에서의 메탄올엔진 배가스 정화효과에 관한 연구)

  • As the major methanol fueled vehicle exhaust components, formaldehyde & methanol conversion over the existing commercial 3-way catalyst was examined in a labolatory tains different Ag loadings on commercial 3-way catalyst, and german commercial catalysts for methanol engine exhaust manufactured by a commercial manufacturer. Silver catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation of silver nitrate solution on commercial 3-way catalyst. These catalysts were characterized with BET Surface area and pore size distribution. In general, the formaldehyde(HCHO) conversion of the tested catalysts was similar to that of methanol$(CH_3OH)$. At 100$^\circ$C, which is equivalent to the cold start condition, 5wt% Ag cat. showed the most excellent HCHO and $CH_3OH$ conversion. The order of activity for conversion of HCHO & $CH_3OH$ to carbon dioxide and water vapor was as follows ; 5wt% Ag/3-way cat.>2wt% Ag/3-way cat.>german cat. front(1) > german cat. rear(2) > 10wt% Ag/3-way cat.> commercial 3-wat catalyst. However there was no significant activity difference between those tested catalysts in the hot run condition of 400$^\circ$C. Therefore, it could be concluded that the Ag-modified 3-way catalyst was the most effective and practical catalyst system which could be capable of removal the HCHO and methanol at the special condition of low temperature such as cold start condition.

K and Cs Doped Ag/Al2O3 Catalyst for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx by Methane

  • In the present study, potassium and caesium doped Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts were synthesized by simple wet impregnation method and evaluated for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx using methane. TEM analysis and diffraction patterns demonstrated the finely dispersed Ag particles. BET surface measurements reveal that the prepared materials have moderate to high surface area and the metal amount found from ICP analysis was well matching with the theoretical loadings. The synthesized K-Ag/$Al_2O_3$ and Cs-Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts exhibited a promotional effect on deNOx activity in the presence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$. The long-term isothermal studies at $550^{\circ}C$ under oxygen rich condition showed the superior catalytic properties of the both alkali promoted samples. The crucial catalytic properties of materials are attributed to NO adsorption properties detected by the NO TPD.

  • $Ag/TiO_2$ particle was prepared using various ionic liquids by wet impregnation. The properties of the particles were significantly affected by the composition of ionic liquids. This is mainly attributed to different abilities of an ionic liquid to coordinate with the silver particle, leading to various coagulation of silver particles. The catalytic activity of the prepared samples was examined for the aerobic benzyl alcohol oxidation. Among the particles, $Ag/TiO_2$ prepared with 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate showed the best catalytic performance.

  • The gas diffusion electrodes as oxygen cathodes f3r the brine electrolysis process were investigated. The gas diffusion electrode consists of a reaction layer, a gas diffusion layer, and a current distributor. The reaction layer was made from hydrophilic carbon black, hydrophobic carbon black, PTFE(polyterafluoroethylene), and Ag catalyst loaded by the silver mirror reaction or impregnation method. The gas diffusion layer was made from hydrophobic carbon black and PTFE, and Ni mesh was used as the current distributor in the reaction layer. The result that the gas diffusion electrode $(10wt\%\;Ag\;catalyst\;and\;20wt\%\;binder)$ manufactured by applying impregnation method to the carbon black f3r reaction layer showed the better performance was obtained from experiments. From the half-cell test, the measured overpotential of this oxygen cathode was about 700mV, And through the electrolysis experiment under the condition of $80^{\circ}C,\;32wt\%$ NaOH, and $300mA/cm^2$, the electrolysis voltage of this electrode was about 2.2 V, The gas diffusion electrodes manufactured in the present research were capable of continuous operations for three months.

  • Activated carbons (ACs) are widely used in adsorption for the removal of gaseous and aqueous pollutants[1,2]. The microbicidal property of ACs is also very important, in order to decrease the risk of water and air contamination with microorganisms. For this purpose, ACs have impregnated with silver or with metallic oxides[2]. However, in the case of Ag supported ACs prepared by impregnation, there are some problem, such as, heat-treatment, highly decrease in specific surface area and pore volume by deposited Ag, and rapidly elution of Ag at the initial stage of usage[3]. Ag Ion Substituted HAp Coatings on Ti-6Al-4V Substrate by IBAD and It's Bactericidal Effect (Ti 합금표면의 항균성 HAp Coating에 관한 연구)

  • Hyeroxyapatite(HAp) which has good biocompatibility was made by Wet Chemical Process. The surface of Ti-6Al-4V, coated with HAp by lon Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD), was treated with 5ppm, 10ppm, 20ppm, and 100ppm of $AgNO_3$ solution. In this Ag impregnation process, $Ca^{2+}$ of HAp was substituted with $Ag^+$ of $AgNO_3$. In this study, the antimicrobial effect and biocompatibility of Ti-6Al-4V alloy which was coated with Ag-HAp were examined. The antimicrobial test was carried out with two kinds of bacteria(P. Aeruginosa, S. Epidermidis), which are highly infectious in a transplanting operation of implant materials. As a result of the test, it was observed that Ti-6Al-4V alloy which was treated by 20ppm of $AgNO_3$ solution has good biocompatibility. In order to observe the antimicrobial mechanism of $Ag^+$, E. coli which is the most common bacterium was treated by Ag-HAp. Then cell morphology of E. coli was observed by the transmission electron microscope(TEM). The destruction of cell wall and cytoplasm of E. coil were observed. A black spot appeared in the cytoplasm was analyzed by energy dispersive analysis X-ray (EDAX) and it showed a small amount of $Ag^+$. Thus, it was proved that $Ag^+$ destroys bacteria effectively and Ti-6Al-4V alloy which was impregnate with Ag ion show antimicrobial effect on infection bacteria.
