  • To resolve the problems of underground space and shade area, repeaters which is used in CDMA system affect the performance and services of a base station or the other services. In this paper, we propose relevant procedures in using CDMA repeaters and the effect of CDMA base stations. We also want to know the operating conditions for the reduction of the effect of repeaters.

  • In the velocimeter, the ultrasonic pulse signal is used for measuring the profile velocity of moving targets distributed in space because of the merits of its high distance resolution and harmless affect to the human body. The velocity reading in conventional ultrasonic pulsed velocimeter depends on the wave pattern reflecting the spatial distribution of scatters and includes observational error due to the signal processing of analyzing pulse signal. In this paper, we evaluate an influence of the received waveform of pulsed signal on the velocity information by setting a model. Subsequently, in order to improve the distance resolution and to obtain precise velocity information without the influence of the spatial distribution of scatterers, we propose a new method for the analysis of Doppler pulsed signal, in which the pulsed signal is transformed into a phase function with local data. Finally, it is confirmed that the performance of the velocimeter is more improved in the proposed method than in the conventional one.

  • This paper presents an on-line scheme for parameter estimation of continuous-time systems, based on the model adjustment technique and the genetic algorithm technique. To deal with the initialisation and unmeasurable signal problems in on-line parameter estimation of continuous-time systems, a discrete-time model is obtained for the linear differential equation model and approximations of unmeasurable states with the observable output and its time-delayed values are obtained for the nonlinear state space model. Noisy observations may affect these approximation processes and degrade the estimation performance. A digital prefilter is therefore incorporated to avoid direct approximations of system derivatives from possible noisy observations. The parameters of both the model and the designed filter are adjusted on-line by a genetic algorithm, A set of simulation works for linear and nonlinear systems is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Nihonbashi River takes more time to discharge water pollution because it runs low-lying areas and is easy to affect tidal flow from downstream. After rainfall, the water environment of the river has become worse. Even though the river is located in the important metropolitan area in Tokyo, it dose not have any connection with people's lives. We took Nihonbashi River as an example to consider methods for river restoration of improving water quality and river environment in densely inhabited urban areas. Especially, the major issue of river restoration is how smoothly and quickly discharges water pollution which flows into with river flow. The conclusion of this project is the effectiveness of improvement of water environment to construct of rock gates in Nihonbashi River and Kanda River to control inflows from upstream and tidal flows from downstream.

The Effects of Activities and Working Conditions on Fire Accidents on Construction Sites

  • Accidents on construction sites involving fires do not occur as often as accidents involving falls from height or collapses. However, once a fire accident occurs, there is a high risk of a large number of casualties. Fire on construction sites is affected by working conditions and the types of activities the construction workers are engaged in at the sites. This study aims to identify activities and working conditions at construction sites that are vulnerable to fire, and analyse how they correlate with each other and how they affect the causes and consequences of fire accidents at construction sties. I analysed 40 fire accident reports and listed the situations vulnerable to fire at construction sites considering direct causes, activities, and working conditions. The most dangerous combination of fire hazards can be the heating devices used during rest/sleep in the office/cabin/storage during cold weather. The next most hazardous combination can be sparks arising from painting, waterproofing, insulation, plumbing, or welding/melting work in an underground or confined space.

  • Recently, sustainable development is very important to all fields and environmental-friendly systems and this systems are also necessary to factory. The purpose of this study is to analyse environmental-friendly systems affect the working conditions of the factory's employees. In order to analyse the satisfaction levels of employees regarding their working conditions, the survey is conducted at various environmental-friendly factories and traditional factories. This survey shows that employees who work at environmental-friendly factories are more satisfied with their working conditions compared to their counterparts at traditional factories. Therefore, the factories that installed environmental-friendly systems provide better working conditions as to traditional factories.

  • In this paper, we consider confidence limits for steady state availability of a redundant structure with the function of switchover processing. The system considered in this paper consists of three units which are an active unit, a standby unit and a switchover device. A control module does not affect the performance of the system while the active unit is operating but causes the system failure if the active unit fails at the failure of the control module. The effect of failure of control module is included in our reliability model of the simple redundant structure. The availability of the system is obtained by using the state space method. An example is given to illustrate our results.

  • The idea to improve the quality of lighting design in interior spaces has gained importance in the last years. This experimental study concentrates on the quality of lighting and the relation between lighting arrangements and perception. A individual office room having four different lighting arrangements was prepared and the differences between the perception of the participants under each lighting arrangement was evaluated. The results suggested that lighting system and arrangements affect interior perception. Wall washing enhanced the impressions of clarity and order, cove lighting enhanced the ceiling higher respectively and other and tungsten-halogenated uplighting made the same space relaxing, private and pleasant.

  • Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDNs) and Broadband ISDN provide high speed data transmission capabilities and therefore, it is now possible to communicate with multimedia information including graphic, motion image, data and audio. Among several new services utilizing multimedia communication networks, distance education service which aims to overcome time and space restrictions between teachers and learners is now heavily focused in many countries. In this paper, several factors which affect to the effectiveness of distance education are surveyed and facilities for organizing distance education classrooms which utilize high speed multimedia communication network are studied in detail. Also, some points are suggested for organizing successful distance equation system based on the multimedia communication technology.
