Biological degradation of nitrogen-containing aromatic compounds was investigated in activated sludge previously adapted to mineralize low concentrations of nitrogen-containing aromatic compounds. Normally, the time required for 95% degradation of 10 mg/l dinitrophenol (DNP) under aerobic conditions was less than 4 hours without any lag, and with mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) levels from 600 to 1,000 mg/l. However, when the initial DNP concentration was increased to 75 mg/l, lags and even complete inhibition of DNP degradation were observed. The length of the lag was found to increase proportionally with decreasing MLSS levels. When dilute activated sludge was incubated for extended periods (192 hours), degradation of 75 mg/l DNP did eventually occur after lag periods of 37 to 144 hours, depending on the MLSS concentration. DNP was degradable in high concentrations if MLSS concentrations were sufficiently high to allow growth of bacteria resistant to the toxic effects of DNP.

In the grilled fish paste stored at $5^{\circ}C$, the total aerobic bacterial counts were effectively reduced by 2.5 kGy or more. In the samples stored at $30^{\circ}C$, the total aerobic bacterial counts of the samples irradiated at 7.5 kGy were below to the limit of detection (2 log CFU/g). The TBA values of the irradiated samples were considerably higher than those of the controls but not proportional to the irradiation dose. It is apparent that an irradiation treatment causes very little textural degradation and the sensorial quality of the sample was maintained by an irradiation at 7.5 kGy or more.

Large amounts of waste and wastewater from aquaculture have negatively impacted ecosystems. Among them, shrimp aquaculture wastewater contains large amounts of nitrogen contaminants derived from feed residues in an aerobic environment. This study isolated candidate strains from adult rockworms to treat shrimp aquaculture wastewater (SAW) in an aerobic environment. Among 87 strains isolated, 25 grew well at the same temperature as the shrimp aquaculture with excellent polymer degradation ability (>0.5 cm clear zone). Six isolates (strains AL1, AL4, AL5, AL6, LA10, and PR15) were finally selected after combining strains with excellent polymer degradation ability without antagonism. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that strains AL1, AL4, AL5, AL6, LA10, and PR15 were closely related to Bacillus paramycoides, Bacillus pumilus, Stenotrophomonas rhizophila, Bacillus paranthracis, Bacillus paranthracis, and Micrococcus luteus, respectively. When these six isolates were applied to SAW, they reached a maximum cell viability of 2.06×105 CFU mL-1. Their chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) and total nitrogen(TN) removal rates for 12h were 51.0% and 44.6%, respectively, when the CODCr/TN ratio was approximately 10.0. Considering these removal rates achieved in this study under batch conditions, these six isolates could be used for aerobic denitrification. Consequently, these six isolates from rockworms are good candidates that can be applied to the field of aquaculture wastewater treatment.

We accomplished optimization for pump and treat (P&T) designs in consideration of degradation processes such as retardation and biodegradation, which are significant for contaminant fate in hydrogeology. For more desirable remediation, optimal pumping duration and minimum pumping rate constraint problems are studied. After a specific P&T duration, it replaces the P&T with the enhanced natural attenuation (ENA), which induces aerobic biodegradation by maintaining oxygen concentration. The design in this strategy carries out the optimization for the number and locations of oxygen injection wells.
Dinitrophenol is preventing cells from making energy for growth and it has been suggested that pH may be important in mitigating effects of uncouplers. The effect of pH on toxicity of dinitrophenol at high concentration was investigated, over a pH range of 5.7 to 8.7. DNP inhibition was found to be strongly dependent on mixed liquor pH. The DNP degradation rate was highest in the pH range of 7.0 to 7.8; at pH 6.0 degradation of 0.41 mM dinitrophenol was significantly inhibited; at pH <5.7, dinitrophenol degradation was completely inhibited after approximately 25% of the dinitrophenol was degraded. However no significant effect of pH variation was seen on glucose uptake by the activated sludge mixed culture.
Applicability of Thermal field flow fractionation (ThFFF) was investigated for the analysis of masticated natural rubber (NR) adhesives produced bya hot melt mastication process. An optimum ThFFF condition for NR analysis was found by using tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a solvent/carrier and a field-programming. Low flowrate (0.3 mL/min) was used to avoid stopping the flow for the sample relaxation. Measured molecular weight distribution was used to monitor degradation of rubber during the mastication process. Rubber samples collected at three different stages of the mastication process and were analyzed by ThFFF. It was found that in an anaerobic process rubber degradation occurs at the resin-mixing (compounding) zone as well as in the initial break-down zone, while in an aerobic process most of degradation occurs at the initial breakdown zone. It was also found that E-beam radiation on NR causes a slight increase in the NR molecular weight due to the formation of a branched structure.
In this study, a BTX degrading microbial consortium was obtained from the activated sludges of a BTX releasing sewage water and city sewage water treatment plant. The MY microbial consortium was developed for benzene and toluene degradation, whereas the MA microbial consortium was developed for xylene isomers. The major microorganism of the MA consortium was identified as Rhodococcus ruber DSM 43338T, whereas that of the MY consortium was Rhodococcus sp. In terms of the degradation of a single component, the removal rate of benzene was fastest and decreased in order; toluene, o-xylene, p-xylene and m-xylene. For degradation of mixed BTX, most BTX were degraded within 108 hours and the degradation rate showed either stimulatory or inhibitory effects depending on the composition. MA and MY microbial consortium obtained in this study may be used effectively to remove BTX biologically.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of high-salinity wastewater on the microbial activity of Aerobic Granule Sludge (AGS). Laboratory-scale experiments were performed using a sequencing batch reactor, and the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), nitrogen removal efficiency, sludge precipitability, and microbial activity were evaluated under various salinity injection. The COD removal efficiency was found to decrease gradually to 3.0% salinity injection, and it tended to recover slightly from 4.0%. The specific nitrification rate was 0.043 - 0.139 mg $NH_4{^+}-N/mg$$MLVSS{\cdot}day$. The specific denitrification rate was 0.069 - 0.108 mg $NO_3{^-}-N/mg$$MLVSS{\cdot}day$. The sludge volume index ($SVI_{30}$) ultimately decreased to 46 mL/g. The specific oxygen uptake rate decreased from an initial value 120.3 to a final value 70.7 mg $O_2/g$$MLVSS{\cdot}hr$. Therefore, salinity injection affects the activity of AGS, causing degradation of the COD and nitrogen removal efficiency. It can be used as an indicator to objectively determine the effect of salinity on microbial activity.

Aerobic cometabolism of cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (c-DCE) and c-DCE epoxide by a butane-grown mixed culture was evaluated. Transformation of c-DCE resulted in the concomitant generation of c-DCE epoxide. Chloride release studies showed nearly complete oxidative dechlorination of c-DCE (approximately 75%). Mass spectrometry confirmed tile presence of a compound with mass-to-charge-fragment ratios of 112, 83, 48, and 35. The values are in agreement with the spectra of a chemically synthesized c-DCE epoxide. Some evidences indicating the involvement of the monooxygenase in the transformation of c-DCE epoxide are: 1) $O_2$ requirement for c-DCE transformation and butane degradation; 2) butane inhibition on c-DCE transformation and vice versa; 3) the inactivation of c-DCE and c-DCE epoxide transformations by acetylene (a known monooxygenase inactivator); and 4) tire inhibition of c-DCE epoxide transformation by c-DCE.
The concept for the decolorization in biological dye wastewater treatment systems is based on anaerobic treatment, for the reductive cleavage of the dyes' azo linkages, in combination with aerobic treatment, for the degradation of the products from azo dye cleavage, aromatic amines. Batch tests were conducted to examine the conditions and the factors affecting biological treatment of dye wastewater. From the tests, the removal efficiencies of organics and colors of dyeing wastewater were improved to $COD_{Cr}$ 27% and color 9% by injecting 10% of the domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate, and $COD_{Cr}$ 30%, color 22% with 30% injection of domestic wastewater. Therefore it was proved that decolorization efficiency is demonstrated with domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate. The analysis of aromatic amines in wastewater showed that decolorization was achieved by cometabolism while aromatic amines were produced by cleavage of azo bonds under anaerobic conditions and these products were removed in an aerobic tank subsequently.
