Leaking underground storage tanks are a major source of groundwater contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons. Bioremediation of aromatic hydrocarbons in groundwater and sediments is often limited by dissolved oxygen. Aerobic bioremediation has been highly effective in the remediation of many fuel releases, but Many aromatic hydrocarbons degrade very slowly under anaerobic conditions. Nitrate is a good alternative electron acceptor to oxygen and denitrifying bacteria are commonly found in the subsurface and in association with contaminated aquifer materials. Because nitrate is less expensive and more soluble than oxygen. it may be more economical to restore fuel-contaminated aquifers using nitrate rather than oxygen. This study show that biodegradation of BTEX and MTBE is enhanced by the nitrate-amended microcosms under aerobic/anaerobic conditons. Although aromatic hydrocarbons degrade very slowly under anaerobic conditions. Biodegradaton was observed for all of the test compounds.
This study focused on the groundwater quality, biodegradability and attenuation rate at the petroleum contaminated sites of Kangwon and Gyeonggi Provinces, Korea. For groundwater quality, Kangwon site showed chemical compositions of $Ca-SO_4+Cl$, $Ca-HCO_3$ and $Na+K-HCO_3$ types, while Gyeonggi site showed chemical compositions of $Ca-SO_4$, $Ca-HCO_3$ and $Na-HCO_3$ types. $Na+K-HCO_3$ and $Na-HCO_3$ types were detected only in February. Among many biodegradation processes, the majority was attributed to biodegradation from denitrification in both area. In Kangwon site, biodegradation from denitrification occupied 63.5%, and in Gyeonggi site it was 39.45%. Biodegradation from the most efficient aerobic respiration occupied 7.12% in Kangwon site, while Gyeonggi site in it did 27.29%. Point attenuation rate of BTEX in Gyeonggi site (GW-22) was 0.0182 $day^{-1}$, half life of BTEX was 84 days, and thus 124 days (0.34 year) would be required to clean up this site. Mean of point attenuation rate of TPH in Kangwon site was 0.0088 $day^{-1}$, mean of half life was 257 days, and thus 462 days would be required to clean up the site. Mean of point attenuation rate of TPH in Gyeonggi site was 0.0387 $day^{-1}$, mean of half life was 55 days, and thus remediation time was calculated as 99 days.

Coagulation-flocculation (CF) was tested coupled with an aerobic biofilter to reduce total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPHs) concentration and toxicity from petrochemical wastewater. The efficiency of the process was followed using turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The biofilter was packed with a basaltic waste (tezontle) and inoculated with a bacterial consortium. Toxicity test were carried out using Lactuca sativa var. capitata seeds. Best results for turbidity removal were obtained using alum. Considerable turbidity removal was obtained when using Opuntia spp. COD removal with alum was 25%, for Opuntia powder it was 36%. The application of the biofilter allowed the removal of 70% of the remaining TPHs after 30 days with a biodegradation rate (BDR) value 47 $mgL^{-1}d^{-1}$. COD removal was slightly higher with BDR value 63 $mgL^{-1}d^{-1}$. TPH kinetics allowed a degradation rate constant equal to $4.05{\times}10^{-2}d^{-1}$. COD removal showed similar trend with $k=4.23{\times}10^{-2}d^{-1}$. Toxicity reduction was also successfully achieved by the combined treatment process.
Cutting oils are emulsionable fluids widely used in metal working processes. Their composition is mineral oil, water, and additives (fatty acids, surfactants, biocides, etc.) generating a toxic waste after a long use. Cutting oils also affect colour, taste and odour of water, making it undesirable for domestic and industrial uses. In these days, conventional treatment methods as evaporation, membrane separation or chemical separation have major disadvantages since they generate a concentrated stream that is more harmful than the original waste. In this study, our purpose is to reduce cutting oils by using biological treatment. Eighty one strains were isolated from cutting waste oil of industrial waste water sludge under aerobic conditions. Among these strains, KS47, which removed 90.4% cutting oil in 48 hr, was obtained by screening test under aerobic conditions(pH 7, $28^{\circ}C$). KS47 was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa according to morphological, physiological and biochemical properties, 16S rDNA sequence, and fatty acid analysis. P. aeruginosa KS47 could utilize cutting oil as carbon source. In batch test, we obtained optimal degradation conditions(1.5 g/L cell concentration, pH 7, and temperature $30^{\circ}C$). Under the optimal conditions, 1,060 mg/L cutting oil was removed 83.7% (74.1 mg/L/hr).

This study is to estimate the viability of aerobic stabilization technology for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from landfills in Korea. In this study, methane emissions were estimated by applying Landfill gas estimation model (LandGEM) to Y landfill in Korea. By comparison of an anaerobic condition (baseline) and an aerobic condition, the amount of $CO_2eq$ savings was calculated. The $CO_2eq$ savings take place inside the landfilled waste during aeration due to the conversion of previously anaerobic biodegradation to aerobic processes, releasing mainly $CO_2$. It was demonstrated that 86.6% of the total GHG emissions occurring under anaerobic conditions could be reduced by aerobic stabilization technology. This means the aerobic stabilization technology could reduce environmental contamination through early stabilization and GHG emissions considerably at the same time. Therefore, the aerobic stabilization technology is one of the optimal technologies that could be employed to domestic landfill sites to achieve sustainable landfill.
Activated carbon is widely used for the treatment of water, wastewater and other liquid wastes. Biological activated carbon (BAC) process is water and wastewater treatment process developed in the 1970's. In addition to activated carbon adsorption, biodegradation organic pollutants occurs in the BAC bed where a large amount of aerobic biomass grows. This results in a long operation time of the carbon before having to be regenerated and thus a low treatment cost. Although the BAC process has been widely used, its mechanisms have not been well understood, especially the relationship between biodegradation and carbon adsorption, whether these two reactions can promote each other or whether they just simultaneously exist in the BAC bed. Also, the phenomenon of bioregeneration has been confused that previously occupied adsorption sites appear to be made available through the actions of microorganisms. And that, because biological process is influenced by low temperature, the mechanism of the BAC process is also effected by temperature variation in our country of winter temperature near the freezing point. Therefore, the objective of this study examines closely the mechanism of the BAC process by temperature variation using phenol as substrate. From this study, biological activated carbon is good substrate removal better than non adsorbing materials (charcoal, sand) as temperature variation, especially low temperature(near $5^{\circ}C$).

The purpose of this study is to investigate the biofilm reactors capable of doing high efficiency treatment. Vertical fluidized bed biofilm reactor(VFBBR) and spiral fluidized bed biofilm reactor(SFBBR) was used for their performence in biodegradation of artificial sewage. The factors influencing the efficiency of those reactors were compared with difference of physical condition. They had same size but different structure to gain access of its unique characteristics. When recycle solution with flow rate of 22 mL/min and artificial sewage with flow rate of 2~10 mL/min were fed into two reactors in aerobic state, the average $COD_{cr}$, removal rate for biodegradation of SFBBR was greater than VFBBR. After reactor feed sewage was constantly maintained as flow rate of 4 mL/min and the recycle solution were changed to 10~32 mL/min respectively, the average $COD_{cr}$ removal rate of artificial sewage in SFBBR was greater than VFBBR. In this experiment for addition of support media into two reactors SFBBR was 4.1% excellent than VFBBR. Above all, SFBBR excelled VFBBR in boidegradation of organic matter in sewage.
The objectives of this study were to determine biodegradation and characteristics of BTEX and MTBE under aerovic-anaerobic conditions and evaluate the potential of natural attenuation method in denitrifying condition.. In the single-substrate experiments, all of the BTEX compounds were degraded under all the conditions. but, lower degradation of benzene and p-xylene were observed under aerobic condition due to the lack of oxygen initially supplied. In the mixed-substrate experiments, BTEX degradation was delayed compared to that in the single-substrate experiments due to a competition of the substrates. Biodegradation of MTBE was observed only under denitrifying conditions and we expected that MTBE mineralized to $CO_2$ without the accumulation of TBA. We also conducted to determine the effect of initial nitrate concentration on BTEX and MTBE degradation. At low nitrate concentration (<50 mg/L), BTEX degradations were limited by the lack of electron acceptor and BTEX degradation was inhibited at high nitrate concentration (>200 mg/L). The results in this study indicated that biotransformation could be applied to the gasoline-contaminated region under aerovic-anaerobic.
The experiments were performed using both batch and continuous column reactors. Batch biodegradation studies were performed under aerobic conditions to determine the biodegradable fraction of the natural organic matter (NOM) source. NOM source was evaluated for its biodegradability at three different UV irradiation conditions and compared to its biodegradability without UV irradiation. In continuous experiments, system operating parameters of empty bed contact time (EBCT), recycle ratio, and influent concentration affected the extent of biofiltration in the biofilters. The effluent UV254/DOC ratios fro the biologically active columns were consistently lower than the influent values, which indicated that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removed by biodegradation was not a significant part of the UV-absorbable material. The increase in UV254/DOC ratio was caused by the DOC decrease across the biofilter because there was essentially no difference between the feed and effluent UV254 absorbance values over time. The results of this research showed that biofiltration was an effective method for removing the biodegradable fraction of NOM from water supplies.
Landfarming that supplies aerobic biodegradation condition to indigenous microbes in soils is a biological remediation technology. In this research, volatilization and biodegradation rate by indigenous microbes in the soil contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) were measured. Soils were contaminated with diesel artificially and divided into two parts. One was sterilized by autoclave to remove indigenous microorganism and the other was used as it was. Various moisture contents and number of tillings were applied to the soil to find out proper condition to minimize volatilization and enhance bioremediation. Volatilization of TPH was inhibited and biodegradation was enhanced by increase on moisture content. Tilling was usually used to supply air for microbes, but tillings did not affect the growth of microbes in our study. Enough moisture content and proper aeration are important to control volatilization in landfarming. Also, TPH degradation was a function of the microbe counts (x1), numbers of tilling (x2), and moisture content (x3) from the application of the response surface methodology. Statistical results showed the order of significance of the independent variables to be microbe counts > numbers of tilling > moisture content.
