Effect on Preference of Clinical Practice Subjects

  • This study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey study that confirms the effect on subjects that prefer clinical practice in order to prepare basic data for efficient clinical practice guidance for nursing college students. The study participants were 201 students attending C University, and the data collection period was from October 1 to October 15, 2022. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 as descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, Chi square test, ANOVA test, and Multiple regression test. As a result of the analysis, it was found that clinical decision-making and critical thinking were correlated under the statistical significance level (r=.730, p<0.01). The most favorite clinical practice department was community nursing, and male students preferred community nursing the most (Male=45.6%, χ2=.000), female students were found to prefer similar levels of practical subjects with child nursing , adult nursing, and maternal nursing(χ2=000).Clinical decision-making was found to be higher in students who preferred community nursing at a statistical significance level than those who preferred child nursing (F=4.91, p<0.01). Critical thinking was higher among students who preferred adult nursing than those who preferred other subjects (F=4.65, p<0.01). Through the analysis results, it was found that general characteristics vary, but clinical decision-making ability and critical thinking affect the preference of clinical practice subjects. Therefore, based on the results of this study, the professor of clinical practice suggests the development of a program to foster clinical decision-making and critical thinking to make students interested in clinical practice subjects.

Using Tobit Regression Analysis to Further Understand the Association of Youth Alcohol Problems with Depression and Parental Factors among Korean Adolescent Females

  • Objectives : This study characterized the extent to which youth depressive symptoms, parental alcohol problems, and parental drinking account for differences in alcohol-related problems among a large sample of adolescent females. Methods : The stratified sample consists of 2077 adolescent females from twelve female-only high schools located in a large metropolitan city in the Republic of Korea. Students completed a questionnaire about alcohol use and alcohol problems, their parents' alcohol problems, and a number of risk and protective factors. Data were analyzed using tobit regression analyses to better characterize the associations among variables. Results : Almost two-thirds of students who consume alcohol had experienced at least one to two alcohol-related problems in their lives and 54.6% reported at least one current symptom of depression, with nearly one-third reporting two depressive symptoms. Two-thirds of the students indicated that at least one parent had an alcohol-related problem, and that approximately 29% had experienced several problems. Results of tobit regression analyses indicate that youth alcohol-related problems are positively associated with depressive symptoms (p<0.01) and parent drinking problems (p<0.05). Parental drinking is no longer significant when the variable parental attention is added to the model. Decomposition of the tobit parameters shows that for every unit of increase in depressive symptoms and in parent drinking problems, the probability of a youth experiencing alcohol problems increases by 6% and 1%, respectively. For every unit of increase in parental attention, the probability of youth experiencing drinking problems decreases by 5%. Conclusions : This study presents evidence that alcohol-related problems and depressive symptoms are highly prevalent among adolescent females. Although a comprehensive public health approach is needed to address drinking and mental health problems, different interventions are needed to target factors associated with initiation of alcohol problems and those associated with increased alcohol problems among those who already began experiencing such problems.

  • The purpose of this study was aim to explore the mediating effect of emotional clarity in the relation between insecure adult attachment and stress coping strategies of university students. 420 university students in Seoul and Gyeonggi area participated in the survey which was composed of adult attachment scale, emotional clarity scale, and stress coping strategies scale, and total 401 data (182 men and 219 women) were used in the analysis. This study has a significance in that it showed the need of intervention on emotional clarity by discovering psychological processes when people who have strong insecure adult attachment tendency cope with stress situations. That is, the emotion coaching will be more effective when emotional clarity is dealt with together as well as stress coping strategies.

Life and leisure of healthcare major adult student (헬스케어전공 만학도의 삶과 여가에 대한 소고)

  • This study was aimed at adult students majoring in the healthcare field to hear stories about life and leisure following work and study at the same time. To this end, four adult students were asked to describe their current life and leisure, positive and negative aspects of their leisure, and future life and leisure, along with interviews, focusing on the daily content they felt during the course of work and study. Afterwards, the technical contents were mutually reinforced with the interview contents and described in the form of self-recording. The decrease in leisure time in adult students' work and study balance inevitably reduces the quality of life. However, each of them was making an effort not to lose the balance between the purpose of their studies and their leisure time. A student's work-study balance is a choice and process for balancing life and leisure, and the joys and sorrows in the process are thought to be the value and hope of life.

The Effects of Adult Attachment and Self-Differentiation on Clinical Competency of Nursing Students (성인애착과 자아분화가 간호대학생의 임상수행능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to understand the relationship between the clinical competency of nursing students and their adult attachment and self-differentiation of nursing students. Data collection was conducted from the third and fourth grade students who had experienced clinical practice in a nursing university at Daejeon, Chungcheong province in two nursing universities at Daejeon and Chungcheong province. Finally, 169 out of initial 200 questionnaires were used for analysis. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation effectiveness, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS Statistics 22 Windows program. Attachment avoidance in adult attachment was significantly correlated with self-differentiation (r=-240, p=.002) and clinical competency (r=-.237, p=.002). Clinical competency was significantly correlated with attachment avoidance (r=-.237, p=.002) and self-differentiation (r=.248, p=.001). The result of stepwise multiple regression indicates that self-differentiation and attachment avoidance (F=8.707, p<.001) predicts 8.4% in clinical competency. The most powerful predictor was self-differentiation (${\beta}=.203$, p=.008), followed by attachment avoidance (${\beta}=.188$, p=.0015). Therefore, in order to improve the clinical competency of nursing college students, it is deemed necessary to develop and apply educational and counseling programs capable of increasing their level of self-differentiation while decreasing their degree of attachment avoidance.

The Influence of Job-seeking Stress, Adult Attachment and Self-assertiveness, on Depression among Korean College Students (대학생의 취업스트레스, 성인애착, 자기표현성이 우울에 미치는 영향)

  • The purposes of this study were to examine effects of job-seeking stress, adult attachment, self-assertiveness on depression among Korean college students. Data were collected through self reported structured questionnaire form 239 Korean college students by convenient sampling methods from April 20 to May 30, 2013. The mean score of depression 14.38(SD=9.81) and 27.6% of the subjects were depression risk groups. A hierarchical multiple regression showed that job-seeking stress (${\beta}$=0.31, p<.001) and adult attachment (${\beta}$=0.32, p<.001) were identified as significant predictors of depression of college students after adjusting for gender, grade, living arrangement, satisfaction for major. And these variables accounted for 34% of depression (F=12.20, p<.001). Therefore, therapeutic nursing intervention should be developed to reduce job-seeking stress and to control attachment-related anxiety, avoidance as a way to regulate depression for Korean college students.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of perceived stress on the relationships between adult anxious attachment and smartphone addiction. To examine the relationships among variables, SPSS program and Amos program were utilized to analyze with 272 college students (male 132, female 139). The present study found a partial mediation effect of perceived stress in the relationship between anxious attachment and smatphone addiction. The result of this study implys that anxious attachment influences cognitive process and the perceived stress may precipitate smartphone addiction. This finding can contribute to the field by enlarging the depth of knowledge about risk factor affecting psychological health (i.e., smartphone addiction) of college students who are "in the beginning of adulthood period" in their lifespan. Current finding may help to providing the protection and treatment of smartphone addiction of college students and help to promote the psychological health of college students.

Parental Loss Experiences of College Students (부모 사별에 따른 대학생의 상실경험 연구)

  • This research reports on a qualitative analysis of email facilitated reflective dialogue with seven college students whose parent dies. The study was exploratory in considering cultural values on intact family and asked the question: What do children experience after parental death in terms of the relationships with intra and extrafamily systems? Young adult children of single parent family expressed that they felt social pressure to practice filial piety toward their single parent. They made efforts to fulfill the social expectation and to achieve social desirability. Social stigma from extrafamily systems affected the experiences of the bereaved children. In terms of intrafamily system, young adult children tend to idealize their deceased parent. Single parents depended on the young adult children, which made parent-child relationship enmeshed or conflicting. The holistic view of the study highlights the importance of interactions between individuals and the intra and extra family systems when understanding family loss experience of the bereaved young people.

Effects of a Simulation based Clinical Reasoning Practice Program on Clinical Competence in Nursing Students (시뮬레이션기반 임상추론 실습교육 프로그램이 간호학생의 간호역량에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a simulation based clinical reasoning practice program on clinical competence in nursing students. The program was based on the theoretical frameworks of simulation models and experiential learning theory. Methods: The program consisted of eight scenarios which includes three main symptoms (abdominal pain, changes in mental status, dyspnea), for improvement of clinical competencies in nursing students. A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used for evaluation of the effects of the program. Fifty-two junior nursing students in Y University participated in the experimental group (n=25) or control group (n=27). Critical thinking was measured using a self-administered questionnaire. Clinical judgment and clinical performance were measured by a rater using the Rubric. Descriptive analysis, t-test, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for data analyses. Results: Clinical judgment and clinical performance increased in the experimental group, but there were no significant differences in critical thinking. Conclusion: Results indicate that the program developed in this study is a useful strategy to enhance clinical judgment and clinical performance in nursing students. However, the program did not significantly enhance critical thinking disposition, and further study is needed to measure integrated clinical competence including critical thinking skills.

Effects of Web-based Multimedia Contents for Mechanical Ventilator Practice on Knowledge and Clinical Competence of Nursing Students (웹기반 인공호흡기 실무 멀티미디어 컨텐츠 학습이 간호학생의 지식과 임상수행능력에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of web-based learning for ventilator practice on the knowledge and clinical competence of nursing students. Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group pre-post non-synchronized design. Twenty five nursing students were collected for the experimental group from August 23 to November 26, 2004 and nineteen nursing students for the control group from August 22 to November 25, 2005. All subjects experienced clinical practices in an intensive care unit of a hospital in G city for 2 weeks. The web-based learning for ventilator practice was conducted in the experimental group only. The data were analyzed with t-test and ANCOVA using SPSS 10.1 program. Result: The 2 week web-based clinical practice learning significantly improved the knowledge scores for the experimental group, however, there was no significant differences in the score for the clinical competence between experimental and control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that a self-directed web-based learning for ventilator practice of nursing students can facilitate the knowledge of care for a ventilated patient. Therefore, faculties should develop a variety of web-based multimedia content programs for clinical instruction based on clinical situation.
