We have investigated Y zeolite and activated carbon for an adsorptive desulfurization of diesel. In batch experiments, cation ($Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$) exchanged Y zeolites showed high equilibrium adsorption capacity for sulfur compounds in model diesel, which contained BT, DBT and 4,6-DMDBT of each 50 ppmw in n-octane. But the cation exchanged Y zeolites lost its capacity in commercial diesel (186 ppmw). On the other hand, activated carbon showed reasonable adsorption capacity for sulfur compounds in both model and commercial diesel. The adsorption capacity of sulfur on Ni-Y zeolite was decreased with the increase of benzene concentration in model diesel but the sorption capacity on activated carbon was insensitive to aromatic concentration. In breakthrough test, activated carbon of 1 g could treat 15 ml of commercial diesel with 186 ppmw sulfur. Toluene showed good solvent for regenerating activated carbon among several solvents.
Current assumptions are used in the formulation of pseudo-first (PFO) and second-order (PSO) models to describe the kinetic data of filtration based on ideal operating conditions. This paper presents a new model developed with pseudo nth order and based on real assumption. A comparison was performed between PFO, PSO and the new model to highlight their performance and the optimisation of the pseudo-order equation, using MATLAB software. Adsorption characteristic of bovine serum albumin adsorption on the track-etched membrane are used as a medium based on protein filtration data were extracted from the literature for different concentrations to demonstrate the comparison between PFO/PSO and the new model. The pseudo first and second-order kinetic models were applied to test the experimental data and they did not provide reasonable values. The results show that the predicted values are consistent with experimental values giving a good correlation coefficient R2 = 0.997 and a minimum root mean squared error RMSE = 0.0171. Indeed, the experimental results follow the new model and the optimal pseudo equation order n = 1.115, the most suitable curves for the new model. As a result, we used different experimental adsorption data from the literature to examine and check the applicability and validity of the model.
This study investigates the adsorption capacity of the gibbsite and the clay on the development of admixed liner. The gibbsite is produced as a by-product in the pretreatment process for cleaning and coloring of Alurninurn sash. From the study, following conclusions were obtained: 1) The adsorption of metals such as Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) and phenol on gibbsite and l:entonite was equilibrated rather quickly(12 ~48 hrs ). 2) The rate and extent of adsorption is a function of surface area the adsorbent having. 3) The Larigmuir isotherm is found to be more suitable than Freundlich isotherm for the adsorption analysis of heavy metals on gibbsite and bentonite. 4) In case of phenol, Freundlich isotherm, whose N value is close to 1, i.e., close to linear isotherm, is more fit to describe the adsorption on gibbsite and bentonite. 5) The amount of metals and phenol adsorbed is found to be in the following order : Adsorbent : $2{\mu}m-Al(OH)_3$ > Mixed Solid > $12{\mu}m-Al(OH)_3$ > Na-Bentonite > $30{\mu}m-Al(OH)_3$
Fly ash has capacity to oxidize or adsorb mercury in a flue gas. Mercury oxidation and adsorption efficiencies of fly ash vary depending on the properties of fly ash. This study was designed to understand reaction characteristics of mercury with fly ash components. The fly ash components were tested to determine their oxidation and adsorption capabilities for elemental mercury and oxidized mercury. A sample was synthesized with fly ash components and tested. The test results were compared with those of the fly ash sample obtained from a coal-fired power plant. $Fe_2O_3$, CuO and carbon black showed higher oxidation or adsorption efficiency for elemental mercury while CaO, MgO, CuO and carbon black showed higher adsorption efficiency for mercury chloride. In addition, the synthesized sample showed comparable mercury oxidation and adsorption efficiencies to the fly ash sample.

In this study, a electrostatic filter which could be applicable to road environment was developed and evaluated in adsorption capacity. The evaluation were performance for removal by particle size and adsorption amount by pressure using ASERAE 52.1 and 52.2. The range of size for removal test was $0.3{\mu}m{\sim}10.0{\mu}m$ which had 12 steps. The filter showed 91.3% removal efficiency from $2.5{\mu}m$ and under the size, average 53.5% proportional to decreasing size value. The weight removal was 96.7% from 22.6 mmaq, initial pressure to 35 mmaq, end pressure with $715.9g/m^2$, the adsorption amount. The shape of isotherm was expressed as Langmuir's one. After washing saturated filter with dust to end pressure, the initial pressure and adsorption amount of the filter showed a light drop with no removal efficiency decline.

Milled Korean pine (Pinus densiflora) wood was used to evaluate its adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by running a series of batch experiments. Prior to the tests, the milled woods were pretreated with 1N NaOH, 1N $HNO_3$, and distilled water, respectively, to examine the effect of pretreatment. Within the tested pH range between 3 and 6, copper adsorption efficiency of NaOH-treated wood(96~99%) was superior to the $HNO_3$-treated wood(19~31%) and distilled water-treated wood(18~35%). The efficiency of copper removal by wood enhanced with increasing solution pH and reached a maximum copper ion uptake at pH 5~6. Adsorption behavior of copper onto both raw and $HNO_3$-treated woods was mainly attributed to interaction with carboxylic acid group. For NaOH-treated wood, carboxylate ion produced by hydrolysis or saponification was a major functional group responsible for Cu sorption. NaOH treatment of wood changed the ester and carboxylic acid groups into carboxylate group, whereas $HNO_3$ treatment did not affect the production of functional groups which could bind copper. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the sorption of copper ion onto NaOH-treated wood. A batch isotherm test using NaOH-treated wood showed that equilibrium sorption data were better represented by the Langmuir model than the Freundlich model.
Recently, the results of vital tissue test showed that nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as a disinfection by-product (DBP), could be regarded as a carcinogen because a tumor was observed in organs. U.S.EPA indicated 0.7 ng/L as exposure concentration of NDMA based on a risk assessment target with a lifetime cancer risk of $10^{-6}$. Several recent studies have shown that UV oxidation could remove NDMA. However, UV oxidation is uneconomical and can reform NDMA after treating. In addition, the treatment mechanism of adsorption has not been founddue to the uncertainty of NDMA pathway. In addtion, NDMA has a radioisotope $^{14}C$-labeled which can be analyzed at low concentration of NDMA by Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC). This study has investigated NDMA determination using LSC at an extremely low range from 1 to 100 ng/L and NDMA removal by powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption. For $^{14}C$-NDMA by LSC, the highest correlation over 99% between count number and NDMA concentrationwas obtained with possibility of $^{14}C$-NDMA concentration up to 1 ng/L. In the presence of PAC ranging from 50 to 10,000 mg/L, $^{14}C$-NDMA was removed from 18% to 97% for Sigma-Aldrich corporation (S-A co.) and from 9% to 93% by PAC for Daejung corporation (Dj co.). Hence it was found that the removal efficiency by PAC adsorption could vary depending on PAC types from different companies. For PAC adsorption capacity of $^{14}C$-NDMA using the Freundlich isotherm, $K_f$ and 1/n of PAC from S-A co. were $2.67\times10^{-3}$ ng/mg and 1.009, while those of PAC from Dj co. were $1.30\times10^{-3}$ ng/mg and 0.994, respectively. Thus, PAC from S-A co. showed twice higher adsorption capacity than Dj co.

In this paper, the adsorption removal characteristic for 10 species of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) was investigated using GAC and modified GAC (GAC-Cu). After modification with Cu(II), the amount of copper was to 1.93 and 4.73 mg/g for GAC and GAC-Cu, respectively. The total amount of 10 species of PFAS per specific area was obtained to 0.548 and 0.612 ng/m2 for GAC and GAC-Cu, respectively. A series of batch test confirmed lower efficiency was observed with a smaller number of carbon chain length and the removal efficiency of PFCA (perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids) was lower than that of PFSA (perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids) with the same carbon chain length. Regarding the pH effect, the adsorption capacity was decreased with increase of pH due to the increase of electrostatic repulsion. According to pseudo first and second order (PFO and PSO) kinetic models, while the values of equilibrium uptake and time did not show significant difference, a difference in uptake was observed between 24-48h. Furthermore, based on correlation analysis, Log Kow and uptake have a high correlation with molecular weight (M.W.) and initial concentration, respectively. These results show that long-chain PFAS have higher removal efficiency due to their increased hydrophobicity.

Adsorption performance of sulfonamide antibiotic compounds such as sulfadimethoxine(SDM), sulfachloropyridazine(SCP), sulfamethazine(SMT), sulfathiazole(STZ) and sulfamethoxazole(SMX) on granular activated carbon(GAC) was evaluated in this study. The coal-based activated carbon was found to be more effective than other carbons in adsorption of sulfonamide antibiotic compounds. The wood-based activated carbon was less effective than coconut- and coal-based carbon in adsorption nevertheless having larger pore volume and specific surface area than others carbons. The maximum adsorption capacities(X/M) of coal-based activated carbon for the five sulfonamide species was 1.3$\sim$1.5 and 1.8$\sim$2.1 times larger than coconut- and wood-based activated carbon, respectively. Carbon usage rates (CUR) of coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons for SCP were 3.55 g/day, 4.29 g/day and 6.47 g/day, respectively. Similar results were obtained in the adsorption of the rest four sulfonamide species. It is concluded that coal-based activated carbon could removed the sulfonamide antibiotic compounds better than other material-based activated carbons.

Adsorption performance of tetracycline antibiotic compounds such as tetracycline(TC), oxytetracycline(OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and minocycline(MNC) on granular activated carbon(GAC) was evaluated in this study. The coal-based activated carbon was found to be more effective than other carbons in adsorption of tetracycline antibiotic compounds. The wood-based activated carbon was less effective than coconut- and coal-based carbon in adsorption nevertheless having larger pore volume and specific surface area than others carbons. The maximum adsorption capacities(X/M) of coal-based activated carbon for the four tetracycline species was 1.27$\sim$1.36 and 1.69$\sim$1.84 times larger than coconut- and wood-based activated carbon, respectively. Carbon usage rates(CUR) of coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons for tetracycline(TC) were 2.96 g/day, 3.40 g/day and 4.53 g/day, respectively. Similar results were obtained in the adsorption of the rest three tetracycline species. It is concluded that coal-based activated carbon could removed the tetracycline antibiotic compounds better than other material-based activated carbons.
