Chitosan was modified by gamma radiation-induced grafting with maleic acid and then used for the removal of cobalt ions from aqueous solutions. Chitosan-g-maleic acid was characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effect of the dose (1-5 kGy) and monomer concentration (0.3-1.3%, m/v) on the grafting ratio was examined. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were also investigated. The results showed that the optimal dose for grafting was 2 kGy. When monomer concentration was within the range of 0.3-1.3% (m/v), the grafting ratio increased almost linearly. For the adsorption of cobalt ions by chitosan-g-maleic acid beads, the pseudo second-order kinetic model ($R^2=0.99$) and Temkin isotherm model ($R^2=0.96$) were able to fit the experimental data reasonably well. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of cobalt ions increased from 2.00 mg/g to 2.78 mg/g after chitosan modification.

Activated carbons with high surface area of 2,600 $m^{2}/g$ and high pore volume of 1.2 cc/g could be prepared by KOH activation of rice hulls at a KOH:char ratio of 4:1 and $850^{\circ}C$. In order to increase the adsorption capacity of hydrogen sulfide, which is one of the major malodorous component in the waste water treatment process, various contents of $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ and $KIO_{3}$ were impregnated to the rice-hull activated carbon. The impregnated activated carbon with 5 wt.% of $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ showed improved $H_{2}S$ adsorption capacity of 75 mg/g which is twice of that for the activated carbon without impregnation and the impregnated activated carbon with 2.4 wt.% of $KIO_{3}$ showed even higher $H_{2}S$ adsorption capacity of 97 mg/g. The improvement of $H_{2}S$ adsorption capacity by the introduction of those chemicals could be due to the $H_{2}S$ oxidation and chemical reaction with impregnated materials in addition to the physical adsorption of activated carbon.
A batch experiment was conducted to evaluate the removal capacity of welsh onion(Allium fistulosum L.), shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.) roots as an adsorbent for Ni and Pb in aqueous solution. One gram of the dried Allium root powder was reacted in 100ml of solution containing 10mg of each heavy metal and effects of metal concentration, pH, temperature, and size of adsorbent on the removal efficiency were evaluated. The results were as follows ; The amount of adsorption of heavy metal ions were higher with the smaller particles size of adsorbent. Garlic root was high adsorption capacity of Pb, especially. The higher concentration of heavy metal solution was, the more amount of adsorption of heavy metals was. The adsorption ratio was differed from a kind of heavy metal. As the temperature increased, the amount of adsorption of Ni and Pb by shallot and welsh onion were decreased. The amount of adsorption of Ni was high under alkali conditions but the amount of adsorption of Pb was high under neutral and acidity condition.
This study evaluates heavy metal(Cu and Cr) adsorption characteristics produced from food waste charcoal extracted in an optimal operation condition after analyzing activated charcoal of iodine adsorption and heavy metals that derived from an activation process of carbide by the developed by-products of food waste treatment facility using the methods from previous studies. As experiment apparatus, this study used a tube-shaped high temp furnace. The mixing ratio of by-products of food waste treatment facility, carbide, and activation component($ZnCl_2$) was 1:1. The experiment was proceeded as adjusting the activation temperature from 400 to $800^{\circ}C$ and activation time from 30 to 120 minutes. The optimal activation condition for iodine absorption was 90 minutes at $700^{\circ}C$ and by using the produced food waste charcoal, this study conducted an experiment on absorption of heavy metals (Cu and Cr) as changing pH of artificial wastewater and stirring time. As a result, pH 7 showed the highest heavy metal decontamination ratio and in terms of stirring time, it revealed balance adsorption after 10 minutes. This result can be particularly applied as basic data for recyclability of high concentration organic waste, by-products of food waste treatment facility, as an food waste charcoal.
In this study, we have investigated the adsorption properties for nitrate ion in ground water using mixed resin type hybrid ion exchange (HIXF) and fiber type ion exchanger. Their swelling ratio (4.45 g/g) and ion exchange capacities (2.45 meq/g) were higer than the swelling ratio of IEC and IXF. Adsorption yield increased for nitrate $NO_3^-$ and sulfate $SO_4^{2-}$ ions were optimal at the concentration ratios of nitrate and sulfate below 1.0 and the adsorption yields were 100% and 20%, respectively. On the other hand it was shown that the degree of adsorpted for nitrate to pH 3, but it was little changed in the other pH range. We found that the selective adsorption capacity for nitrate was the optimal the mixing ratios of resin and fibrous ion exchanger of below 0.5.
A facile method for the preparation of nitrogen-doped microporous carbon via the pyrolysis of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) using polypyrrole (PPy) as a selective nitrogen source was developed. A PVDF/PPy-800 sample (carbonized at $800^{\circ}C$) with a 1:0.5 ratio of PVDF and PPy exhibited the highest micropore volume. The activated microporous carbon materials obtained from PVDF/PPy-800 prepared at $800^{\circ}C$ with KOH possessed a large specific surface area and narrow pore-size distribution. They were characterized using $N_2$ adsorption at 77 K and argon (Ar) adsorption at 87 K, which allowed for the characterization of the narrow microporosity of the prepared materials due to the absence of interactions between Ar and the sample surface. In addition, the activated microporous carbon material with a KOH/carbon ratio of 2:1 was found to exhibit the largest specific surface area ($1296m^2g^{-1}$ in $N_2$ at 77 K) and microporosity, and a high specific capacitance ($122.8F\;g^{-1}$).

Properties of pulp fibers can be modified by LbL multilayering technology. We evaluated the effect of stock composition on the polyelectrolyte multilayering performance of pulp fibers in this study. Stock composition was varied with pulp type and fines content. Three types of pulp-Hw-BKP, BCTMP and KOCC-were treated with polyelectrolytes of poly-DADMAC and PSS. Fines content of stock were controlled at 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40%. Zeta potential of pulp fibers and charge demand of filtrate were evaluated. The highest adsorption ratio was obtained for BCTMP because of its shortest fiber length and highest specific surface area. Higher fines content in the stock increased the adsorption ratio of polyelectrolyte onto pulp fiber and it required a higher amount of polyelectrolyte for charge neutralization. For the pulp stock with higher fines content, a higher level of polyelectrolyte and the increased layer number were required to modify and stabilize the electrochemical properties of pulp fibers.
The adsorption characteristics of Sr ions and Cs ions in single and binary solution by zeolite A were investigated in batch experiment. The adsorption rate of Sr ions and Cs ions by zeolite A obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model in single and binary solution. The initial adsorption rates (h) and adsorption capacities of both ions obtained from pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the values were decreased with increasing concentration of the competitive ions (0~1.5 mM). Also, adsorption isotherm data in binary solution were well fitted to the extended Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities of Sr and Cs calculated from the model were 1.78 mmol/g and 1.64 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption of Sr and Cs ions by zeolite A was carried out in the presence of other cations such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$. The results showed that the zeolite A can maintain a relatively high adsorption capacity for Sr and Cs ions and exhibits a high selectivity in the presence of competitive cations. The effect of competition had an order of $Ca^{2+}$ > $K^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ for Sr ions and $K^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ for Cs ions at the same cation concentration.
Former studies revealed that sepiolite thermally treated at high temperature have high adsorption capacity for phosphate. However, its micron size (75 ㎛) limits its application to water treatment. In this study, we synthesized sepiolite impregnated polysulfone (PSf) beads to separate it easily from an aqueous solution. PSf beads with different sepiolite ratios were synthesized and their efficiencies were compared. The PSf beads with 30% impregnated sepiolite (30SPL-PSf bead) possessed the optimum sepiolite ratio for phosphate removal. Kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic adsorption experiments were performed using the 30SPL-PSf bead. Equilibrium adsorption was achieved in 24 h, and the pseudo-first-order model was suitable for describing the phosphate adsorption at different reaction times. The Langmuir model was appropriate for describing the phosphate adsorption onto the 30SPL-PSf bead, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the 30SPL-PSf bead obtained from the model was 24.48 mg-PO4/g. Enthalpy and entropy increased during the phosphate adsorption onto the 30SPL-PSf bead, and Gibb's free energy at 35 ℃ was negative. An increase in the solution pH from 3 to 11 induced a decrease in the phosphate adsorption amount from 27.30 mg-PO4/g to 21.54 mg-PO4/g. The competitive anion influenced the phosphate adsorption onto the 30SPL-PSf bead was in the order of NO3- > SO42- > HCO3-. The phosphate breakthrough from the column packed with the 30SPL-PSf bead began after ~2000 min, reaching the influent concentration after ~8000 min. The adsorption amounts per unit mass of 30SPL-PSf and removal efficiency were 0.775 mg-PO4/g and 61.6%, respectively. This study demonstrates the adequate performance of 30SPL-PSf beads as a filter for phosphate removal from aqueous solutions.

The equilibrium of adsorption of basics dyes RB 5 and BG 4 from a single dyes in the mixtures on the sodium-exchanged clay of the Maghnia (Algeria) was studied. The maximum adsorption capacities of BR5 and BG4 in single dyes were 465.13 and 469.90 mg/g respectively. In the simultaneous adsorption of BR5 and BG4 from mixture solutions, three different initials concentrations ratios R (R=$C_{(BR5)}/C_{(BG4)}$) were tested: 2.5/1, 1/1 and 1/2.5 using ADMI method. The isotherms adsorptions of dyes from the mixtures are characteristics of competition phenomenon. A very strong interaction between BR5 and BG4 for the active sites of adsorption of surface of clay is obtained for R = 1/1. The ratio R' (R'=$Qe_{(mixture)}/Qe_{(single)}$) of the adsorption capacity of BR5 and BG4 in the mixture were reduced by factor of 0.86, 0.74 and 0.84 for the initials concentrations ratios R (R=$C_{(BR5)}/C_{(BG4)}$) of 2.5/1, 1/1 and 1/2.5 respectively. The variation of the ratio of the adsorption capacity R‘ of BR5 and BG4 in the mixture solutions with initial concentration ratios R indicates that BR5 dye is slightly favourable in the competition adsorption than BG4. Langmuir and Freundlich models fit very well with adsorption behaviour of single dyes as well as the dyes in mixture solutions.
