Biosorption represents a technological innovation as well as a cost effective excellent remediation technology for cleaning up radionuclides from aqueous environment. In the present study, a bacteria strain FB12 with high adsorption rate of uranium ion was isolated from the vicinity of the nuclear power plant. It was tentatively identified as Bacillus sp.FB12 according to the 16S rDNA sequencing. Efforts were made to further improve the adsorption rate and genetic stability by UV irradiation and UV-LiCl cooperative mutagenesis. The improved strain named Bacillus sp.UV32 obtains excellent genetic stability and a high adsorption rate of 95.9%. The adsorption of uranium U (VI) by Bacillus sp.UV32 from aqueous solution was examined as a function of metal ion concentration, cell concentration, adsorption time, pH, temperature, and the presence of some foreign ions. The adsorption process of U (VI) was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The adsorption isotherm study indicated that it preferably followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters values calculated clearly indicated that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic in nature. These properties show that Bacillus sp.UV32 has potential application in the removal of uranium (VI) from the radioactive wastewater.
The general objective of the present study was to investigate the potential application of the UV spectroscopic method for determination of the polymeric additives present in papermaking fibrous stock solutions. The study also intended to establish the surface-chemical retention model associated with the adsorption kinetics of additives on fiber surfaces. Polyamide epichlorohydrin (PAE) wet strength resin and imidazolinium quaternary (IZQ) softening agents were selected to evaluate the analytical method. Concentrations of PAE and IZQ in solution were proportional to the UV absorption at 314 and 400 nm, respectively. The time-dependent behavior of polymeric additives obeyed a mono-molecular layer adsorption as characterized in Langmuir-type expression. The kinetic modeling for polymeric adsorption on fiber surfaces was based on a concept that polymeric adsorption on fiber surfaces has two distinguishable stages including initial dynamic adsorption phase and the final near-equilibrium state. The simulation model predicted not only the real-time additive adsorption behavior for polymeric additives at high accuracy once the kinetic parameters were determined, but showed a good agreement with the experimental data. The spectroscopic method examined on the PAE and IZQ adsorption study could potentially be considered as an effective tool for the wet-end retention control as applied to the paper industry.
In this study, zeolitic materials were synthesized from Jeju Volcanic Rocks (JVR) using a fusion/hydrothermal method at NaOH/JVR ratios of 0.6 and 1.2. The crystallinities of the zeolitic materials at NaOH/JVR ratios of 0.6 and 1.2 were 25.5% and 59.0%, respectively. It was confirmed through the SEM image that the zeolitic materials covered the zeolite particle with a cube-shaped crystals. The Co ions adsorption by the zeolitic materials were to reach the adsorption equilibrium at 120 min. It could be better simulated in the pseudo-second order adsorption kinetic equation than in the pseudo-first order adsorption kinetic equation. The adsorption capacities (qm) of Co ions could be to estimate Langmuir isotherm better than Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities (qm) at NaOH/JVR ratios of 0.6 and 1.2 were 55.3 mg/g and 68.7 mg/g, respectively. It was found that there was a high correlation between the crystallinity of zeolitic materials and the adsorption capacity of Co ions adsorption.

The kinetics and thermodynamics of the adsorption of acid blue 40 from an aqueous solution by activated carbon were examined as a function of the activated carbon dose, pH, temperature, contact time, and initial concentration. The adsorption efficiency in a bathtub was increased at pH 3 and pH 11 due to the presence of sufonate ions ($SO_3{^-}$) and amine ions ($NH_2{^+}$). The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The results indicated that the Langmuir model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. The separation factor of the Langmuir and Freundlich model showed that the adsorption treatment of acid blue 40 by activated carbon could be an effective adsorption process. The adsorption energy determined by the Temkin equation showed that the adsorption step is a physical adsorption process. Kinetics analysis of the adsorption process of acid blue 40 on activated carbon showed that a pseudo second order kinetic model is more consistent than a pseudo second order kinetic model. The estimated activation energy was 42.308 kJ/mol. The enthalpy change (80.088 J/mol) indicated an endothermic process. The free energy change (-0.0553 ~ -5.5855 kJ/mol) showed that the spontaneity of the process increased with increasing adsorption temperature.
Water vapor adsorption kinetics of 3 different types of chitosan-based films, i.e., control chitosan, chitosan/montmorillionite (Na-MMT), and chitosan/silver-zeolite (Ag-Ion) nanocomposite films, were investigated at temperature range of $10-40^{\circ}C$. In all the films, water vapor is initially adsorbed rapidly and then it comes slowly to reach equilibrium condition. Reasonably good straight lines were obtained with plotting of 1/($m-m_0$) vs. l/t. It was found that water vapor adsorption kinetics of chitosan-based films was accurately described by a simple empirical model and the rate constant of the model followed temperature dependence according to Arrhenius equation. Arrhenius kinetic parameters ($E_a$ and $k_o$) for water vapor adsorption by chitosan-based films showed a kinetic compensation effect between the parameters with the isokinetic temperature of 315.52 K.
Synthesized hydroxyapatite (Hyd) and Fe-hydroxyapatite (Fe-Hyd) composite were used for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB) from aqueous solutions in this study. The effect of adsorbent amount, pH and initial MB concentration were carried out to investigate in the aqueous solution. The kinetic study shows that the MB adsorption process with Hyd or Fe-Hyd follow pseudo-second order kinetic model. Experimental results are well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Hyd and Fe-Hyd were obtained as 2.90 mg/g and 5.64 mg/g for MB according to Langmuir Isotherm models, respectively. Fe-Hyd composite increased the adsorption capacity of Hyd by 1.95 times that Hyd. It is concluded that Fe-Hyd composite is promising and economical adsorbent for MB removal in the aqueous solution.

This study investigated the potential of using bottom ash to be used as an adsorbent for the removal of lead (Pb) from aqueous solutions. The physical and chemical characteristics of bottom ash were determined, with a series of leaching and adsorption experiments performed to evaluate the suitability of bottom ash as an adsorbent material. Trace elements were present, such as silicon and aluminum, indicating that the material had a good adsorption capacity. All heavy metals leached during the Korea standard leaching test (KSLT) passed the regulatory limits for safe disposal, while batch adsorption experiments showed that bottom ash was capable of adsorbing Pb (experimental $q_e$ = 0.05 mg/g), wherein the adsorption rate increased with decreasing particle size. The adsorption data were then fitted to kinetic models, including Lagergren first-order and Pseudo-second order, as well as the Elovich equation, and isotherm models, including the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The results showed that pseudo-second order kinetics was the most suitable model for describing the kinetic adsorption, while the Freundlich isotherm best represented the equilibrium sorption onto bottom ash. The maximum sorption capacity and energy of adsorption of bottom ash were 0.315 mg/g and 7.01 KJ/mol, respectively.
Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic properties for adsorption of acid fuchsin (AF) dye by activated carbon were carried out using variables such as dose of adsorbent, pH, initial concentration and contact time and temperature. The effect of pH on adsorption of AF showed a bathtub with high adsorption percentage in acidic (pH 8). Isothermal adsorption data were fitted to the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Freundlich isothem model showed the highest agreement and confirmed that the adsorption mechanism was multilayer adsorption. It was found that adsorption capacity increased with increasing temperature. Freundlich's separation factor showed that this adsorption process was an favorable treatment process. Estimated adsorption energy by Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model indicated that the adsorption of AF by activated carbon is a physical adsorption. Adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Surface diffusion at adsorption site was evaluated as a rate controlling step by the intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, Gibbs free energy, enthalpy entropy and isosteric heat of adsorption were investigated. The activation energy and enthalpy change of the adsorption process were 21.19 kJ / mol and 23.05 kJ / mol, respectively. Gibbs free energy was found that the adsorption reaction became more spontaneously with increasing temperature. Positive entropy was indicated that this process was irreversible. The isosteric heat of adsorption was indicated physical adsorption in nature.

The aim of the present study is to explore the possibility of utilizing fly ash and loess, as alternative to activated carbon, for the adsorption of diazinon in water. Batch adsorption experiment was performed to evaluate the influences of various factors like initial concentration, contact time and temperature on the adsorption of diazinon. The adsorption data shows that fly ash is not effective for the adsorption of diazinon. The equilibrium data for both activated carbon and loess were fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model appeared to be the better-fitting model because it has higher $R^2$ compared to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G$), the enthalpy (${\Delta}H$) and the entropy (${\Delta}S$) were calculated. Contrary to loess, the ${\Delta}G$ values of activated carbon were negative at the studied temperatures. It indicates that the adsorption of diazinon by activated carbon is a favorable and spontaneous process. The positive ${\Delta}H$ values of activated carbon and loess suggest that the diazinon adsorption process is endothermic in nature. In addition, the positive ${\Delta}S$ values show that increased randomness occurs at the solid/solution surface during the adsorption of diazinon.
The feasibility of using volcanic ash for lead ion removal from wastewater was evaluated. The adsorption experiments were carried out in batch tests using volcanic ash that was treated with either NaOH or HCl prior to the use. Volcanic ash dose, temperature and initial Pb(II) concentration were chosen as 3 operational variables for a $2^3$ factorial design. Ash dose and concentration were found to be significant factors affecting Pb(II) adsorption. The removal of Pb(II) was enhanced with increasing volcanic ash dose and with decreasing the initial Pb(II) concentration. Pb(II) adsorption on the volcanic ash surface was spontaneous reaction and favored at high temperatures. Calculation of Gibb's free energy indicated that the adsorption was endothermic reaction. The equilibrium parameters were determined by fitting the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, and Langmuir model better fitted to the data than Freundlich model. BTV(base-treated volcanic ash) showed the maximum adsorption capacity($Q_{max}$) of 47.39mg/g. A pseudo second-order kinetic model was fitted to the data and the calculated $q_e$ values from the kinetic model were found close to the values obtained from the equilibrium experiments. The results of this study provided useful information about the adsorption characteristics of volcanic ash for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution.
