  • The electrical-impedance method has been widely used for void-fraction measurement in two-phase flow due to its many favorable features. In the impedance method, the response characteristics of the electrical signal heavily depend upon flow pattern, as well as phasic volume. Thus, information on the flow pattern should be given for reliable void-fraction measurement. This study proposes an improved electrical-conductance sensor composed of a three-electrode set of adjacent and opposite electrodes. In the proposed sensor, conductance readings are directly converted into the flow pattern through a specified criterion and are consecutively used to estimate the corresponding void fraction. Since the flow pattern and the void fraction are evaluated by reading conductance measurements, complexity of data processing can be significantly reduced and real-time information provided. Before actual applications, several numerical calculations are performed to optimize electrode and insulator sizes, and optimal design is verified by static experiments. Finally, the proposed sensor is applied for air-water two-phase flow in a horizontal loop with a 40-mm inner diameter and a 5-m length, and its measurement results are compared with those of a wire-mesh sensor.

  • Because of the low power and low rate of a sensor network, outlier is frequently occurred in the time series data of sensor network. In this paper, we suggest periodic pattern analysis that is applied to the time series data of sensor network and predict outlier that exist in the time series data of sensor network. A periodic pattern is minimum period of time in which trend of values in data is appeared continuous and repeated. In this paper, a quantization and smoothing is applied to the time series data in order to analyze the periodic pattern and the fluctuation of each adjacent value in the smoothed data is measured to be modified to a simple data. Then, the periodic pattern is abstracted from the modified simple data, and the time series data is restructured according to the periods to produce periodic pattern data. In the experiment, the machine learning is applied to the periodic pattern data to predict outlier to see the results. The characteristics of analysis of the periodic pattern in this paper is not analyzing the periods according to the size of value of data but to analyze time periods according to the fluctuation of the value of data. Therefore analysis of periodic pattern is robust to outlier. Also it is possible to express values of time attribute as values in time period by restructuring the time series data into periodic pattern. Thus, it is possible to use time attribute even in the general machine learning algorithm in which the time series data is not possible to be learned.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to find the differentiating characteristics of ameloblastomas and odontogenic keratocysts of the jaw by analyzing computed tomography (CT) images of the lesions, clarify radiological characteristics associated with jaw lesions, and to make a diagnsis based on these findings. Materials and Methods : Test subjects were chosen among the patients who were diagnosed as having an odontogenic keratocyst or ameloblastoma at the Yonsei University Dental Hospital from January 1996 to December 2000 and had CT scans taken preoperatively. The subject pool was comprised of 51 cases of odontogenic keratocyst and 37 cases of ameloblastoma. The following measures were used for image analysis of the lesion: the anatomic location, CT pattern, mesiodistal width, buccolingual width, the ratios between mesiodistal width and buccolingual width, height, CT number, homogeneity of radiodensity, the appearance of a sclerotic rim, continuity of adjacent cortical bone, and displacement and resorption of adjacent teeth. Results: Comparing the CT patten, mesiodistal width, buccolingual width, height, CT number, homogeneity, appearance of sclerotic rim, continuity of adjacent cortical bone, there were statistically significant differences between ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst test subjects (p<0.05). Comparing the ratios between mesiodistal width and buccolingual width, displacement and resorption of adjacent teeth, there were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05). Conclusion: We compared odontogenic keratocysts and ameloblastomas in CT scans. They occurred most frequently in the posterior to the ramus of the mandible. The findings of patterns of the CT images showed that size and border of lesions were more aggressive in ameloblastomas than in odontogenic keratocysts. The internal contents represented an increased attenuation area (IAA) in odontopenic keratocyst. Odontogenic keratocysts were shown to have higher CT numbers than ameloblastomas.

  • The purpose of this study was to qualitatively analyze coordination pattern of joints and segments during Dwichagi in Taekwondo and present a point of difference as compared with the previous study on Dolryeochagi in Taekwondo. By the utilization of three-dimensional cinematography, the angles of individual joints and segments of six male Taekwondo experts during Dwichagi were calculated by using Euler's angle. The used coordination variables were angle vs. angle plots between adjacent joints and segments and angle vs. angular velocity plots of individual joints and segments, respectively. It was observed during Dwichagi that in-phase coordination and spring-like rotational control mechanism of the lower and upper trunk were transferred into straight spring-like control mechanism of lower leg passing through flexion-extension and the fixation of degree-of-freedom of lower trunk and hip joint alternatively. This comparative study that coordination variables were used seems to be more useful research direction to deeply understand basic control mechanisms of Taekwondo kicking techniques when compared with the previous studies that defined Dwichagi as a thrust movement pattern merely based on biomechanical variables of a kicking leg.

  • In this paper, a phoneme separation and an establishment of discriminative pattern of Korean phonemes are studied on experiment. The separation uses parameters such as pitch extraction, glottal peak pulse width of each pitch. speech duration. envelope and amplitude bias. The first pitch is extracted by deviations of glottal peak and width. energy and normalization on a bias on the top of vowel envelope. And then, it traces adjacent pitch to vowel in whole. On vewel, amethod to be reduced gliding pattern and the possible of vowel distinction to be used just second formant are proposed, and shrinking pitch waveform has nothing to do with pitch length is estimated. A pattern of envelope, spectrum, shrinking waveform, and a method of analysis by mutual relation among phonemes and manners of articulation on consonant are detected. As experimental results, 90% on vowel phoneme, 80% and 60% on initial and final consonant are discriminated.

  • To complete the appropriate pattern language as a planning tool for suburban houses in Korea, this study reviews the characteristics in applying the pattern language to suburban houses in Korea by creating the pattern application examination chart regarding 110 patterns in architecture and evaluating and analyzing 24 examples in terms of the applicability of the patterns, the results of which are as set forth below. Firstly, when grouping the upper 31 patterns by similar characteristics, it was distinguished by the characteristics relating to (i) securing of lighting and viewing; (ii) placing of buildings and space and adjustment of inside and outside privacy through such placing; (iii) placing of proper motion line and functions of adjacent space according to such motion line; and (iv) determining of important space such as personal room, area for couple or children, staircase, entrance, hallway, etc. Secondly, when analyzing the reasons that the lower 41 patterns have not been applied, it was characterized by (i) the work space not suitable for suburban houses or the patterns suitable for commercial space; (ii) the patterns not suitable in Korea due to cultural differences; and (iii) the patterns whose applicability cannot be confirmed due to the limitation of examples and materials used in this study. Thirdly, the analysis of each pattern group (A through M) revealed that the pattern groups D and G are rarely related to suburban houses and J and M are patterns whose applicability cannot be determined in this study. Another characteristics is that the pattern groups B, E, F, I and L which obtain high scores in applicability are importantly reflected in planning for suburban houses in Korea. Fourthly, this study renders the average score of applicability, and the applicability rate, of the examples and confirms the number of the patterns applied in confirmity, patterns partially or potentially applied and patterns not applied at all.

  • We have used a plasma etching method in order to develop a concave-type Pt electrode capacitor to overcome the limitation of conventional stack-type capacitor in a small critical-dimension (CD) pattern. We have deposited Pt layer on the concave-type structure made by patterning of $SiO_2$ and subsequently we separated the adjacent nodes by etch-back process with photoresist (PR) as a protecting layer.

  • Bovine gastricsin catalyzes peptide synthesis over an optimum range of pH 4~5, resulting in satisfactory yields of methyl esters and p-nitroanilides of benzyloxycarbonyl tetra- to hexa-peptides, provided that hydrophobic amino acid residues form new peptide bonds. The effectiveness of the enzyme also depends on the nature of adjacent amino acid residues. An aspartic proteinase with a characteristic gastricsin specificity pattern would be useful for the synthesis of middle-length peptides.

  • Maxillary anterior crown fractures are a common form of injury that mainly affects children and adolescents. The position of maxillary incisors and their eruptive pattern carries a significant risk for trauma. In the pre-adhesive era, fractured teeth needed to be restored either with pin-retained inlays or cast restorations that sacrificed healthy tooth structure and were a challenge for dentists to match with adjacent teeth. But. recently the development of adhesive dentistry has allowed dentists to use the patient's own fragment to restore the fractured tooth. The purpose of this paper is to present 2 cases of reattachment of fractured teeth which had different fracture mode, and to evaluate prognosis of cases.

  • Patterns are symbolic expressions of life style or sentiment of people as a product of culture. Furthermore, it is a type of language that the shape or implication does not change much over time. Patterns shown on the Korean medical containers are related to human life and health that they are not very diverse and splendid but closed used in real life. The medical containers include the alcohol container or tea-ware in broad sense, but under this study, it would be handled only for the Korean medical containers directly used to protect human health and treatment of diseases. They would be the Medicine Mortar and Pestle that is used to grind the herbal medical ingredients, pots that hold the liquid decoction, containers to keep the medical ingredients in general conceptual use for medical purposes. The patterns inscribed are classified in animal pattern, plant pattern or alphabet pattern. Turtle, crane, ginseng, and life patterns have the contemplation to pray for long life without disease or good fortune, while plum pattern, dragon pattern and the like are used in the medical containers used mainly in royal families with the social status and dignity shown. As such, patterns have not only ornament elements but also the symbolic implication to represent long life without illness for human. It provides the basic data of medical wisdom contained in the pattern and willingness of human to protect life from illness. On the basis of such research, it would require ensuing studies to make comparison and analysis with the medical containers with the patterns in the adjacent countries in the days to come.
