The blends of Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) have been recognized as a replacement for commodity plastic films and bags in biodegradable packaging industries. The purpose of this study is to identify changes in the thermal and mechanical properties of PLA/PBAT blends with the addition of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO). PLA (80%) and PBAT (20%) were melt mixed with 0 to 10 phr of PEO and processed using a hot press. The addition of PEO into PLA/PBAT increased the elongation at break and improved thermal stability. With PEO addition, two melting temperature (Tm) peaks of PLA/PBAT merged into one peak showing improved miscibility. The result of this study showed that the addition of PEO increased the ductility and thermal stability of PLA/PBAT blends.
This study was performed to survey the school supplies such as pencil, eraser, notebook and color paper. Twenty-two kinds of samples were collected near the school zone, and eight kinds of phthalate which is one of the environmental hazard factors analyzed to estimate the contents characteristics of products. As the results of these research, three kinds of phthalates (BBP, DNOP and DIDP) were not detected in the selected samples. In the A group, DEHP and DINP were detected in the rage of 22%~28%, and DINP was selected 28%, 24% and 28% in the A-1, A-3 and A-4 samples, respectively. But the selected samples in the B group were detected less than 1,000 ppm as regulated level. Also, The DBP was detected 1% in the C-2 sample, and DEHP was detected 0.3% in the C-1 and C-6 samples. The DEHA was detected 0.3% in the D-3 sample. In this study, the DINP was mainly detected the eraser, therefore this kind of phthalate can be exposed through dermal exposure.
The actual specific migration data for antioxidants and di-ethylhexyl adipate from plastic food packaging materials being used for fatty food and at high temperature into various food simulants were obtained and compared in accordance with the testing methods and conditions in EU, USA and Korea or Japan. In the case of food packaging material for high temperature use, especially in a thick film such as polypropylene in $450{\mu}m$ thickness, a significant difference in the migration value for antioxidants was observed depending on the migration testing condition and simulants used as defined in the each country areas. Considering the reduction factor of 2 to 5 as being currently applied in EU and USA regulations, the migration values obtained by testing methods of Korea or Japan can exhibit actually higher than those of EU and USA. The migration testing conditions are required to be specified diversely according to the actual exposure temperature of packaging materials.
In this study, using PBAST (poly(butylene adipate-co-succinate-co-terephthalate)) which was eco-friendly biodegradable aliphatic polyester, PBAST/PVA (poly(vinyl alcohol)) double-layered hollow microspheres were prepared with the water/oil/water multiple emulsion ($W_1/O/W_2$) method. The double-layered hollow microspheres were manufactured with the yield of 30.92% when the concentration of polymer PBAST in organic phase was 5 wt%, the concentration of PVA in inner aqueous phase was 5 wt%, the volume ratio of $W_1/O$ emulsion to outer aqueous phase was 1:4.5, and when co-surfactants that had large gap in HLB (hydrophile-lipophile balance) value were used. The bulk density of prepared hollow microsphere was 0.180 g/ml and particle size was $1.5{\sim}3\;{\mu}m$.
The hydrolyzability of chemically modified starches and ramen staches was determined by hog pancreatic ${\alpha}-amylase$ in vitro test. The extents of hydrolysis were 64.5% and 59.3% in native and acetylated potato starch, 70.5% and 60.4% in native and hydroxypropylated corn starch, and 65.2% and 57.3% in native and hydroxypropylated high amylose corn starch, respectively. The hydrolysis extents of waxy corn starch derivatives were shown in the descending order of pregelatinized (74.3%)>native (72.1%)>acetylated (66.5%)>acetyl distarch adiphate (56.4%)>hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate (50.7%). In the test on starches of container and regular ramen cooked by practical way, no significant difference was observed between ramen products of five different makers. Although the hydrolysis rate and extent of chemically modified starches were lower than those of native starches, the digestibility of ramen seemed to be not affected in the common diet as the use level of modified starch was relatively low.

This study demonstrate that polymeric microspheres composed of poly (ethylene adipate) (PEA) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) can encapsulate and remarkably stabilize Broussonetia kazinoki root extract. We compared the long-term stability and the activity of Broussonetia kazinoki root extract in polymeric microspheres fabricated with different polymer ratio of PEA and PMMA. PMMA was incorporated to the PEA microsphere in order to reinforce the physical strength of microsphere, and there was no noticeable negative effect on the activity of Broussonetia kazinoki root extract. Optical microscope (OM), polarized microscope (PM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results showed that PMMA incorporated microspheres were very spherical and had smoothsurface. On the other hand, PEA microspheres showed relatively irregular morphology due to the low physical strength of microspheres. Moreover, the mushroom tyrosinase activities were measured for testing the inhibitory activity of Broussonetia kazinoki root extract encapsulated in polymeric microspheres, and these microspheres showed the effective suppression of mushroom tyrosinase activity. Consequently, polymeric microspheres produced in this study may be beneficial for the research of improving stability and protecting labile substances incorporated into the polymeric microspheres.
Poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) membrane electrodes based on the lipophilic neutral carrier, dibenzo-18-crown-6(DB18C6) and benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5) as the active sensors for Tl$^+$ ion have been prepared and tested in different content of the potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate (KTClPB) as lipophilic salt. Dioctyl adipate (DOA), 2-nitrophenyl phenyl ether (NPPE) and o-nitrophenyl actyl ether (NPOE) were used as plasticizing solvent mediators. Electrodes exhibited good linear responses of 40∼55 mV decade$^{-1}$ for Tl$^+$ ion within the concentration ranges 10$^{-1}$∼10$^{-5}$M TlNO$_3$. Selectivity coefficients of interfering ions (alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and some transition metal ions) for Tl$^+$-ISE were determined by separate solution method and were sufficiently small for most of them. These crown ether type ion-selective electrodes are suitable for use with aqueous solution at pH > 3.

A plasticizer is a substance which is added to a material to improve its processability, flexibility and stratchability. Phthalates and adipates are the most frequently used plasticizers of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). However, they can migtate into food from PVC food packaging, and some of them are especially suspected as endocrine disruptors. In this study, Simultaneous analysis of 13 phthalates and 9 adipates were carried out by dual-column gas chromatography system equipped wi two FID detectors for rapid confirmation and quantification. The Proposed method was validated with > 0.993 of linearity in the ranges of 10-500 mg/l, < $3.5\%$ RSD of reproducability in 10 inter-days sample preparations, and > $98.1\%$ of recoveries for all the plasticizers. DEHA was detected in all the 3 PVC wraps at levels of 176.9-198.5mg/g. Among the 51 samples of PVC gaskets, the targeted plasticizers were detected in 41 samples. Of these plasticizer detected samples,40 contained DIDP at the levels of 157.3-374.7 mg/g and one contained DMP at the levels of 165.6 mg/g. Also, some plasticizers were detected in other packaging materials such as PET, PP, PE, Pulp. But it might be attributed to contamination in manufacturing.
Among the phthalic esters, di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), which are categorized endocrine disrupting chemicals, account toy up to 80% of the world production. Nine phthalic esters were quantitatively determined in water and in sediment samples from Gawngyang Bay and Seomjin River estuary. This might be the first report in contamination of phthalates in the marine environment of Korea. DBP and DEHP were detected with the high concentration and high frequency, while the other phthnlic compounds were below the detection limits. The aveyage concentyations of DBP and DEBP in sediment from Gawngyang Bay were 33.8 ng g$\^$-1/ and 67.4 ng g$\^$-1/ on a dry weight basis, respectively. The concentrations in surface watey from Seomjin River estuary were in the range of 62.7∼333.8 ng L$\^$-1/ for DBP and 25.6 ng L$\^$-/∼116.1 ng L$\^$-1/ for DBHP. In sediments from Seomjin River estuary, DBP ranged 9.1∼149.3 ng g$\^$-1/, and DEHP 46.3∼156.3 ng g$\^$-1/. Phthalic esters concentrations found in Seomjin River estuary were much less than those in other rivers in Korea. Distribution pattern of DBP and DEHP concentrations in Seonliin River estuary indicates that both compounds aye introduced to Gwangyang Bay through run-off.
Polyurethane/melamine phosphate composite foam (MP-PUF) was prepared from poly(adipate)diol/melamine phosphate composite (f=2), polyether-polyol (f=4.6), and PMDI (f=2.5). The thermal properties of MP-PUF such as morphology, closed-cell content, thermal conductivity, and thermal stabilities were characterized. Water was used as a blowing agent, and the composition of melamine phosphate (MP) was maintained at $1.43{\pm}0.3wt%$ of MP-PUF. As the content of water increased, the thermal conductivity of pure polyurethane foam (PUF) decreased, whereas the thermal conductivity of MP-PUF increased. The thermal stabilities of the PUF and the MP-PUF were maximized at 5 php $H_2O$, and then decreased at the higher $H_2O$ contents. The thermal stabilities of MP-PUF were greatly enhanced due to the synergetic effect of MP and urea, which was generated during the blowing process. The temperature of 50% residual mass of MP-PUF increased to $370{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ and the temperature of 30% residual mass exceeded over $700^{\circ}C$. Compared to the PUF, the temperature of 50% residual mass and 30% residual mass were higher than 25 and $70^{\circ}C$, respectively.
