In order to improve the adhesion of water-based adhesive, gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants were synthesized and applied to water-based adhesives. The surfactants were synthesized by using maleic acid and polyoxyethylene cetyl ether having different length of ethylene oxide and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$. Their appearance was light yellow wax. The cloud point of the compound was more than $78^{\circ}C$. The measured critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}7.0{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ and surface tension at c.m.c was 25.9~32.0 mN/m. As the number of ethylene oxide increased, the emulsifying power was improved. The foaming height of each compound by Ross-Miles method was 1.4~4.5 cm. The synthesized surfactants was then used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization of water-based adhesives and its physical properties were evaluated. The solid contents of prepared adhesives was 59%. The average particle size and initial tackiness of the prepared adhesives were 164~297 nm and ball no. of 20~32, respectively. The peel strength was $1.8{\sim}2.1kg_f/mm$. The retention rate of adhesives viscosity was evaluated to 99% during 30 days. Therefore, synthesized gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants are expected to be applied as an emulsifier for the high adhesive force.
Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD)-based hydrocarbon resins are widely used as tackifiers in many applications. In particular, hydrogenated DCPD-based hydrocarbon resins are widely used in premium hot-melt-type adhesives such as hot melt adhesives (HMAs) and/or hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesives (HMPSAs), because are water-white in color and possess excellent stability to light and heat. This article discusses the adhesive performance of various hydrogenated DCPD resins when they are used as tackifiers in styrene-block-copolymer (SBC)-based HMPSAs. This article shows the correlation between the characteristics of tackifiers and the adhesive performance of SBC-based HMPSAs. The higher the softening point of the tackifier, the higher is the $T_g$, softening point, and crossover temperature of the PSAs. High aromatic H wt% content reduces the high-temperature resistance of PSAs, as suggested by the decrease in the crossover temperature and softening point of the PSAs.
Human hair (HH) is produced as a waste from beauty parlor and barbershop. HH-based adhesives were formulated with NaOH-hydrolyzed HH, $H_2SO_4$-hydrolyzed chicken blood (CB) and PF as a crosslinking agent. Physicochemical properties and retention rate against hot water of the adhesives were measured to investigate the potential of HH as a raw material of wood adhesives. HH was composed of keratin-type protein of 80% and over. Ash of less than 0.1% was contained in HH. Among the amino acids included in HH, glutamic acid showed the highest content, followed by cysteine, serine, arginine and threonine. Solid content of the adhesives ranged from 33.2% to 41.8% depending on hydrolysis conditions of HH and PF type. Viscosity at $25^{\circ}C$ ranged from 300 to $600mPa{\cdot}s$ resulting in a sprayable adhesive. Retention rate against hot water measured to evaluate the water resistance of adhesives was the highest in the cured resin formulated with 5% NaOH-hydrolyzed HH and 5% $H_2SO_4$-hydrolyzed CB. Meanwhile, the molar ratio of formaldehyde to phenol in PF did not have a significant impact on the retention rate of HH-based adhesives. When the retention rates of HH-based adhesives were compared to those of conventional wood adhesive resins used for the production of wood-based panels extensively, HH-based adhesives formulated with 30 wt% PF showed lower retention rate than commercial urea-formaldehyde resin. However, when PF content was increased to 35 wt%, the retention rate greatly increased and approached to that of commercial melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin. Except for the results mentioned above, the analysis of economic feasibility suggests that HH-based adhesives can be used for the production of wood-based panels if HH is hydrolyzed in proper conditions and then the HH-based adhesives are formulated by the HH hydrolyzates with 35 wt% PF.

In this study, glued laminated timber were manufactured by different types of adhesives for larch and spruce. Adhesives used to manufacture glued laminated timber include resorcinol resin, phenol resorcinol resin, melamine resin, and polyurethane. The char thickness and char rate according to the type of adhesive forglued laminated timber were analyzed. Melamine, resorcinol, and polyurethane showed excellent fire resistance performance in that order.
In this study, a series of hot-melt pressure sensitive adhesives (HMPSAs) based on metallocene polyolefin (me-PO) were prepared to investigate their possibility of replacing the HMPSAs based on styrenic block copolymers (SBCs). In addition, to optimize the performance of HMPSAs based on me-PO, several tackifiers having different softening point and molecular weight were evaluated. To achieve the HMPSAs which can satisfy the Dahlquist Criterion, hot melts required over 10% of process oil. To obtain the HMPSAs having low viscosity which can be applied by a spraying type applicator, secondary polymer having relatively low crystallinity was required. And, tackifier having high molecular weight attributed to increasing the cohesive strength of me-PO based HMPSAs.
Terpolymer syrups were photopolymerized from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2-hydroxylethyl acrylate and isobornyl acrylate to prepare acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs). After polymerization, various crosslinkers as 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA, Mn = 250, 575, and 700) were added and then UV-irradiated to prepare the semi-IPN type PSAs. Their adhesion performance and storage modulus (G') were strongly dependent on their chemical structure and molecular weight of the crosslinkers. Optical properties such as transmittance (> 92.5 %), haze (< 1.0 %) and color-difference (< 0.3) of PSAs samples were not affected by crosslinker types used in this study.
This study was carried out to improve the properties of powdered tannin adhesive(PT) by adding liquid tannin resin(LT) to PT in the manufacture of particleboard. Mixing the LT to PT from 50% to 100% by weight did not show any difference in particleboard properties, but the higher the powdered tannin resin ratio, the lower the properties of the board. The proper ratio of PT to LT was 30:70 for the improvement of PT-particleboard, unless LT lower than 70%. Internal bonding strength was in proportional to the amount of LT. Mixing amino adhesives and PT did not show any improvements in mechanical and physical properties of the board but they only acted as scavenger for the free formaldehyde.Manufacturing particle board with the adhesive of 30:70 (PT:LT) and by using double blender resulted in high-performance products of E0 level of formaldehyde emission with high water resistance (U type; below 12%, M type; below 25%), as well as saving chip drying energy.

Waterborne pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) has been received much attentions from both academia and industries as an environmental friendly-technology because it can significantly reduce use of hazardous organic volatile solvents. However, in the process of the mass production of waterborne PSAs, hazardous phenol type amphiphilic compounds have essentially been used as surfactants for the emulsion polymerization. For the reason, tremendous research efforts have been made to develop environment-friendly organic surfactant which can replace the phenol type surfactants. In this study, we verify the potential of a new class of surfactants based on the styrenated phenol derivatives as an alternative to the phenol type surfactants.

In this study, reaction mechanism and curing characteristics of adhesives formulated with NaOH- and $H_2SO_4$-hydrolyzed chicken feather (CF) and formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were investigated by FT-IR and DSC. In addition, adhesive properties and formaldehyde emission of medium-density fiberboards (MDF) applied with the adhesives were measured. CF-based adhesives having a solid content of 40% and over were very viscous at $25^{\circ}C$, but the viscosity reduced to $300{\sim}660m{\cdot}Pa{\cdot}s$ at $50^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the adhesives could be used as a sprayable resin. Through the FT-IR spectra of liquid and cured CF-based adhesives, addition reaction of methylol group and condensation reaction between the functional groups with the use of formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were identified. From the analysis of DSC, it was elucidated for CF-based adhesives to require a higher pressing temperature or longer pressing time comparing to commercial urea-formaldehyde (C-UF) resin. MDF bonded with CF-based adhesives, which was formulated with 5% NaOH-hydrolyzed CF (CF-AK-5%) and PF of formaldehyde to phenol mole ratio of 2.5 (PF-2.5), and pressed for 8 min had higher MOR and IB than those with other CF-based adhesives. MOR and IB of MDF bonded with the CF-based adhesives regardless of formulation type and pressing time were higher than those with C-UF resin. When the values compared with the minimum requirements of KS standard, IB exceeded the KS standard in all formulations and pressing time, but MOR of only MDF bonded with CF-AK-5% and PF-2.5 and pressed for 8 min satisfied the KS standard. What was worse, 24-TS of MDF bonded with all CF-based adhesives did not satisfied the KS standard. However, MOR and 24-TS can be improved by increasing the target density of MDF or the amount of wax emulsion, which is added to improve the water resistance of MDF. Importantly, the use of CF-based adhesives decreased greatly the formaldehyde emission. Based on the results, we reached the conclusion that CF-based adhesives formulated under proper conditions had a potential as a sprayable resin for the production of wood panels.
Gambir is a non-wood forest product with a potential of being used as wood adhesive, due to about 33% catechin in it. Meanwhile, catechins and sucrose have not been studied as adhesives. Therefore, basic characteristics of gambir-sucrose adhesives were investigated. In this research, adhesives were prepared by dissolving gambir and sucrose in distilled water, at different blending ratios of the gambir/sucrose such as 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, and 25/75 wt%. Furthermore, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to determine the gambir chemical compositions, and Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was carried out to identify chemical bonds. Particleboards with a target density of 0.8 g/㎤ were then manufactured by hot-pressing for 10 min at 200℃. The internal bond (IB) strength of particleboard was subsequently measured. Based on the GC-MS analysis, 31.11% of catechin was identified. In addition, the viscosity, density, solid content, and gelation time of the adhesives, and insoluble matter content (IMC) in boiling water were 7.30~33.24 mPa.s, 1.2~1.3 g/㎤, 25.56~28.44%, 73~420 min, and 29.75~62.10%, respectively. Adding sucrose to the adhesive was observed to raise the IMC from 49.05 to 62.10%, at 180℃ and 200℃. FT-IR analysis showed that the gambir absorption peaks occurred at approximately 1620 cm-1, assigned to the C=O stretching of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which tended to increase with the addition of sucrose. The reaction between gambir and sucrose was observed in the form of the dimethylene ether bridge. The 25/75 wt% gambir-sucrose adhesives and 200℃ hot-pressed temperature resulted in the highest IB strength (0.89 MPa), and met the requirement of JIS A5908-2003 type 18. Consequently, the gambir-sucrose adhesive could be used as a particleboard adhesive.
