  • Objectives: This study aims to assess the effect of universal adhesives pretreatment on the bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cement to dentin. Materials and Methods: Fifty caries-free human third molars were employed. The teeth were randomly assigned into five groups (n = 10) based on dentin surface pretreatments: Single Bond Universal (3M Oral Care), Gluma Bond Universal (Heraeus Kulzer), Prime&Bond Elect (Dentsply), Cavity Conditioner (GC) and control (no surface treatment). After Fuji II LC (GC) was bonded to the dentin surfaces, the specimens were stored for 7 days at 37℃. The specimens were segmented into microspecimens, and the microspecimens were subjugated to microtensile bond strength testing (1.0 mm/min). The modes of failure analyzed using a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance and Duncan tests (p = 0.05). Results: The surface pretreatments with the universal adhesives and conditioner increased the bond strength of Fuji II LC to dentin (p < 0.05). Single Bond Universal and Gluma Bond Universal provided higher bond strength to Fuji II LC than Cavity Conditioner (p < 0.05). The bond strengths obtained from Prime&Bond Elect and Cavity Conditioner were not statistically different (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The universal adhesives and polyacrylic acid conditioner could increase the bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) to dentin. The use of universal adhesives before the application of RMGIC may be more beneficial in improving bond strength.

  • The phenol resorcinol formaldehyde resin (PRF) adhesives which are curing at ambient temperature for structural purposes were synthesized. A PRF resin is produced according to the two-stage reaction system. In first stage, a low-condensed resol or methylolated phenol were prepared from phenol by reaction with a formaldehyde in alkaline condition. The molar ratio of phenol to formaldehyde was 1.0~1.4. And in second-stage, resorcinol was added to combine with the methylol group of a low-condensed resol(R/P molar ratio 0.3). The glue-joint strength, pot-life and workability of this synthetic PRF resin were superior to conventional ambient temperature setting adhesives such as oilic urethane or water based polymer-isocyanate resin for wood adhesives.

  • In this study, the physical properties of starch adhesive by temperature in carrier and main part for the Stain-Hall method were analyzed. The temperatures of starch solutions in carrier part were inversely proportional to the viscosities. The viscosities of starch solutions were maintained similarly if 2nd temperatures were same independent on the those of the 1st temperatures in carrier part. the starch solutions showed similar viscosities in all range except the viscosity of the solutions in $30^{\circ}C\;and\;40^{\circ}C$. The viscosities of starch adhesives in main part were in proportion to those of starch solutions in carrier part. The viscosities of starch adhesives in main part were maintained similarly if 2nd temperatures in carrier part were same. The viscosities of starch adhesives in main part were low when the ultimate temperature of starch solutions in carrier part were high.

  • Recently, the interest in remodeling of new and old buildings is increasing worldwide. As a result, the frequency of use of architectural adhesives has increased. Currently, adhesives used in buildings are made of organic materials in most cases, and epoxy resin adhesives are most widely used. However, epoxy resin adhesives contain formaldehyde and VOCs in the room during construction, which can cause sick house syndrome. In case of building fire, it may cause damage due to carbon monoxide generated from organic materials. It is urgent to study the problem of epoxy fill adhesive made of such organic materials. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the adhesion of epoxy resin adhesive, which is a problem of epoxy resin adhesive, which is an existing organic adhesive by using inorganic materials such as magnesia and phosphate, And the inorganic adhesive which does not emit the release amount as an inorganic material.

  • The optical performance of the mirror fur satellite camera is highly dependent on the adhesive properties between the mirror and its support. Therefore, in order to design a mirror with high optical performance, the mechanical properties of adhesives should be well defined. In this research, the mechanical properties of three kinds of space adhesives are studied. In case of the materials which show nearly incompressible behavior such as space adhesives, it is important to measure shear modulus which governs deviatoric stress components. Also the experiment should be performed in circumstances similar to real manufacturing process of mirror, because extra factors such as size effects, the adhesion effects of primer and reactions between adhesive and primer affect the properties of adhesive regions. In this research shear moduli of the adhesives are determined by using a single lap adhesively bonded joint. For the shear tests, several temperatures have been selected from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$ which is operating temperature range of the adhesive. In the case of linear behavior materials, shear moduli are calculated through a linear curve fitting. Shear stress-strain relation is obtained by using an exponential curve fitting for material which shows non-linear behavior. The shear modulus of each adhesive is expressed as a function of temperature. Characteristics and adaptability of the adhesives are discussed regarding their temperature sensitivity.

  • Following our previous reports for finger-jointed woods with various finger profiles studied for the efficient use of small diameter logs and woods containing various defects, twelve types of finger-jointed woods glued with three kinds of adhesives and with two sizes of finger pitches were made with sitka spruce and red pine. The effects of the adhesives and finger pitches on bending creep performances of finger-jointed woods were investigated. The shape of creep curves differed among the used adhesives and finger pitches of finger-jointed woods for both tested species. Their creep curves showed a linear behavior beyond about one hour, and the N values fitted to power law increased with increasing finger pitches. The initial deformation increased with increasing finger pitches, regardless of the tested species and kinds of adhesives, whereas the effect of finger pitches on the creep deformation was not clear. For finger-jointed woods glued with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) resin, creep failure occurred in 106 hours after the load was applied. And the difference of the creep compliance between finger-jointed woods glued with resorcinol-phenol formaldehyde (RPF) resin and aqueous vinyl urethane (AVU) resin was small. The ratios for creep performances of finger-jointed woods glued with RPF resin and AVU resin versus solid wood were higher in creep deformation than initial deformation for both species, and the difference between both adhesives was not found. The relative creep decreased with increasing finger pitches, and the marked differences was not found between RPF resin and AVU resin.

  • The bonding performance of two types of wood adhesives, namely phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) resin and melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin for glued laminated timber manufactured by high frequency (HF) heating was evaluated. The HF heating system consists of HF oscillator with dielectric heating system for curing adhesives, and hydraulic press system for clamping glued laminated timber. The designed frequency and output power of the HF system was as 5 MHz and 60 kW, respectively. To verify dielectric heating mechanism under HF oscillation, the heat loss factors of laminae and adhesives were measured. The results show that it is possible to selectively heat adhesives for their curing due to the remarkably higher loss factor of the adhesives than those of wood laminae. The temperature of adhesive in the bonding line reached up to the set temperature within a few seconds by high frequency oscillating, which advanced the curing of adhesive afterwards. The bonding performance, such as shear strength of bonding line, water soaking delamination, and boiling water soaking delamination of PRF resin met the requirement of Korean Standard (KS), however the MUF resin did not meet the KS requirement of boiling water soaking delamination. These results indicate that the HF heating system is successful to manufacture glued laminated timbers with PRF resins to meet the bonding requirements.
