  • Static tensile tests using adhesive-bonded single-lap joints of aluminum alloy were conducted to investigate the effect of geometric factor, overlap length, adherend thickness, adhesive thickness and material composition of adherend/adhesive on the strength of adhesive joint. The average applied shear stress at joint fracture decreased with increasing lap length. However increasing the adherend thickness resulted in a higher joint strength. Higher yield strength of adherend and lower elastic modulus of adhesive is advantageous to the adhesive joint. Newly proposed modified joint factor could be well evaluated the influence of lap length, adherend thickness and adhesive thickness on the bond strength for adhesive joints.

  • Recently, automobile industry has led to increasing use of aluminum alloy for weight reduction. Automobile made of aluminum alloy can be given lighter, stronger and a harder surface by anodizing than one made of steel-alloy. In this paper, we investigate the influence of lap length, adherend thickness and adhesive thickness on adhesive strength of single-lap adhesive joints by conducting tensile-shear tests. Single-lap adhesive joints of aluminum was calculated using joint factor by using adhesive length, adherend thickness of specimen.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the variability of adhesive thickness on the different site of the cavity wall when used total-etch system without filler and simplified self-etch system with filler and to evaluate the relationship between variable adhesive thickness and microtensile bond strength to the cavity wall. A class I cavity in six human molars was prepared to expose all dentinal walls. Three teeth were bonded with a filled adhesive, $Clearfil^{TM}$ SE bond ana the other three teeth were bonded with unfilled adhesives, $Scotchbond^{TM}$ Multi Purpose. Morphology and thickness of adhesive layer were examined using fluorescence microscope. Bonding agent thickness was measured at three points along the axial cavity wall edge of cavity margin (rim). halfway down each cavity wall (h1f), internal angle of the cavity (ang). After reproducing the adhesive thickness at rim, h1f and ang, micro-tensile bond strength were evaluated. For both bonding agents, adhesive thickness of ang was significantly thicker than that of rim and h1f (P <0.05). As reproduced the adhesive thickness, microtensile bond strength was increased as adhesive thickness was increased in two bonding agents. Adhesive thickness of internal angle of the cavity was significantly thicker than that of the cavity margin and the halfway cavity wall for both bonding agents. Microtensile bond strength of the thick adhesive layer at the internal angle of the cavity was higher than that of the thin adhesive layer at 1,he cavity margin and the halfway cavity in the two bonding systems.

  • The characteristics of adhesive bonded joint of steels for automobile were investigated. Shear and tear strength were tested and analyzed for the joints of cold rolled steel sheets bonded with three kinds of epoxy and urethane based adhesive. The results showed that the tensile shear strength and the tear strength of adhesive joint were affected by the shape of adhesive joint such as the length and width of adhesive joint. The thickness of adhesive layer was very important factor affecting the bonding strength. The shear strength increased with decrease of the thickness of adhesive layer, while the tear strength decreased as the thickness of adhesive layer decreased. In comparison with the strength of spot welded joint, the shear strength of adhesive Joint was higher than that of spot welded joint, but the tear strength of adhesive Joint was lower than that of spot welded joint.

  • Recently, adhesive-bonding technique is wifely used in manufacturing structures. Stress and strain analysis of joints are essential to design adhesive-bonded joints structure. The single-lap adhesive joint is the design dominating the range of adhesive joints. In this study, single-lap specimens with different joint dimensions were used for the tensile-shear test and finite element calculation in of order to investigate the effect of overlap length and adhesive-bonding thickness on adhesive strength and stress distribution of the joints. Consequently, it was found that overlap lap size and thickness can be important parameters of structure joints using adhesive bonding, which is effected on adhesive strength.

  • The bonding strength evaluation of the light weight materials for an electrical vehicle has been performed through the T-peel joint test in which the design paramete- rs such as joint style, adherend type, adherend thickness, adhesive thickness, and adhesive type are considered. It is experimentally observed that the peel strength of joint increases with the increase of the adherend thickness. With the increase of the adhesive thickness, however, the peel strength of joint increases a little. Aluminum-FRP adherend combination shows such higher peel strength than that of Aluminum-Aluminum adherend combination. For the adhesive bonded joint, the results of FEM analysis agree with those of experiment. The adhesive bonded joint reinfored with a rivet gives higher peel strength than that of the joint without rivet.

  • With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aircraft, space structures and robot arms, the design and manufacture of composite joints have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this study, the effects of the adhesive thickness, residual thermal stress on the torque capacity of the tubular single lap joints were studied. The torque capacity of the adhesive joints were experimentally determined and found to be inversely proprotional to the adhesive thickness. In order to match the experimental results to the theoretical analyses, the elastic-perfectly plastic material properties of the adhesive were used in the closed form solution. Also, the residual thermal stress of the joints were calculated by the finite element method and it was proved that the residual thermal stress could play an important role in the thick adhesive joints.

  • In bonded composite repair of aircraft structures, the damage of the adhesive can thus reduce significantly the efficiency and the durability of the bonded composite repair. The adhesive damage models using critical zone have proven their effectiveness due to simplicity and ap-plicability of the damage criteria in these models. The scope of this study is to analyze the effects of the patch thickness and the adhesive thickness on the damage damage in bonded composite repair of aircraft structures by using modified damage zone theory. The obtained results show that, when the thickness of adhesive increases the damage zone increases and the adhesive loses its rigidity, inversely when the patch is reduced the adhesive damage be-comes more significant.

  • It is important to measure the quantitative adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend. In measuring the adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend, the effect of the kind and thickness of the adherend on the adhesive strength was studied. Two kinds of metal adherends were selected, aluminum (Al1050) and stainless steel (STS304), and a dolly test and a lap shear test were used to measure the adhesive strength. When measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the tensile stress mode of dolly test, the change in the thickness of the metal adherend had little effect on the adhesive strength, however, the adhesive strength was different depending on the kind of the adherend. On the other hand, when measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the lap shear test, the change in the relative thickness of the metal adherend had an effect on the adhesive strength. The reason is that the bending phenomenon of the adherend occurring in the edge of bonding region during the lap shear test contributes to lowering the adhesive strength by generating additional tensile stress in the bonding region. From this work, it is concluded that the dolly test could be widely used when measuring the quantitative adhesive strength of organic adhesives and metal adherend because there is little change in adhesive strength even though the thickness of the adherend is changed.

  • In this paper, the thickness measurement method of adhesive layers of multilayers using power cepstrum signal processing technique has been proposed. The peak values for reflected signal from each layer have been separated by power cepstrum technique. Therefore, thickness of adhesive layers have been measured by the intervals of peak signal. In the experiment, the adhesive layers of 0.5mm-0.75mm thickness using epoxy(2-Ton and Plastic Steel Putty(A)) between the aluminum and the brass were formed. The adhesive layer thickness which is calculated with data of reflected signal by ultrasonic pulse-echo method was within error 1.34% of the measured values.
