  • The inclusion of a ductile steel bracing as means of repairing an earthquake-damaged bridge bent is evaluated and experimentally assessed for the purposes of restoring the damaged bent's strength and stiffness and further improving the energy dissipation capacity. The study is focused on substandard reinforced concrete multi-column bridge bents constructed in the 1950 to mid-1970 in the United States. These types of bents have numerous deficiencies making them susceptible to seismic damage. Large-scale experiments were used on a two-column reinforced concrete bent to impose considerable damage of the bent through increasing amplitude cyclic deformations. The damaged bent was then repaired by installing a ductile fuse steel brace in the form of a buckling-restrained brace in a diagonal configuration between the columns and using post-tensioned rods to strengthen the cap beam. The brace was secured to the bent using steel gusset plate brackets and post-installed adhesive anchors. The repaired bent was then subjected to increasing amplitude cyclic deformations to reassess the bent performance. A subassemblage test of a nominally identical steel brace was also conducted in an effort to quantify and isolate the ductile fuse behavior. The experimental data from these large-scale experiments were analyzed in terms of the hysteretic response, observed damage, internal member loads, as well as the overall stiffness and energy dissipation characteristics. The results of this study demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing ductile steel bracing for restoring the bent and preventing further damage to the columns and cap beams while also improving the stiffness and energy dissipation characteristics.

  • Objective: We compared the shear bond strength (SBS) of lingual retainers bonded to bovine enamel with three different resins using direct and indirect methods. Methods: Both ends of pre-fabricated twisted ligature wires were bonded to bovine enamel surfaces using Light-Core, Tetric N-Flow, or Transbond XT. Phosphoric acid-etched enamel surfaces were primed with One-Step prior to bonding with Light-Core or Tetric N-Flow. Transbond XT primer was used prior to bonding with Transbond XT. After 24 hours in water at $37^{\circ}C$, we performed SBS tests on the samples. We also assigned adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores after debonding and predicted the clinical performance of materials and bonding techniques from Weibull analyses. Results: Direct bonding produced significantly higher SBS values than indirect bonding for all materials. The SBS for Light-Core was significantly higher than that for Tetric N-Flow, and there was no significant difference between the direct bonding SBS of Transbond XT and that of Light-Core. Weibull analysis indicated Light-Core performed better than other indirectly bonded resins. Conclusions: When the SBS of a wire retainer is of primary concern, direct bonding methods are superior to indirect bonding methods. Light-Core may perform better than Transbond XT or Tetric N-Flow when bonded indirectly.

  • The planar type flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEH) based on PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT) thin films on the flexible substrates are demonstrated to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. The planar type energy harvesters have been realized, which have an electrode pair on the PZT thin films. The PZT thin films were deposited on double side polished sapphire substrates using conventional RF-magnetron sputtering. The PZT thin films on the sapphire substrates were transferred by PDMS stamp with laser lift-off (LLO) process. KrF excimer laser (wavelength: 248nm) were used for the LLO process. The PDMS stamp was attached to the top of the PZT thin films and the excimer laser induced onto back side of the sapphire substrate to detach the thin films. The detached thin films on the PDMS stamp transferred to adhesive layer coated on the flexible polyimide substrate. Structural properties of the PZT thin films were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To measure piezoelectric power generation characteristics, Au/Cr inter digital electrode (IDE) was formed on the PZT thin films using the e-beam evaporation. The ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties were measured by a ferroelectric test system (Precision Premier-II) and piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM), respectively. The output signals of the flexible PEHs were evaluated by electrometer (6517A, Keithley). In the result, the transferred PZT thin films showed the ferroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics without electrical degradation and the fabricated flexible PEHs generated an AC-type output power electrical energy during periodically bending and releasing motion. We expect that the flexible PEHs based on laser transferred PZT thin film is able to be applied on self-powered electronic devices in wireless sensor networks technologies. Also, it has a lot of potential for high performance flexible piezoelectric energy harvester.

  • To prepare acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), quaternary copolymer syrups were photopolymerized from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate as default constituents and isobornyl acrylate and tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate (THFA) as variable constituents. After polymerization, 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate and photoinitiator were added and then crosslinked by UV-irradiation to prepare the PSAs. The characteristics of the syrup such as viscosity, molecular weight, and solid content were investigated. As increasing THFA contents, the relationship between molecular weight and solid content of the syrup was reciprocal. Also, the relationship between peel strength and surface energy of the PSAs showed the same tendency. All the PSA samples showed high transmittance (more than 92%), low haze (less than 1.0%) and low color-difference (less than 1.0).

  • W-ZrC and W-HfC composite powders were fabricated by the Plasma Alloying & Spheroidization (PAS) method and the powders were sprayed into hybrid coating layers by using Low Vacuum Plasma Spray (LVPS) process, respectively. Microstructure, mechanical properties, and ablation characteristics of the fabricated coating layers were investigated. The LVPS process led to successful production of W-Carbide hybrid coatings, approximately 400 ${\mu}M$ or above in thickness. As the substrate preheating temperature increased from $870^{\circ}C$ to $917^{\circ}C$, the hardness of the W-ZrC coating layer increased due to decreased porosity. Vickers hardness showed higher value (about 108.4 HV) in W-ZrC hybrid coating material compared to that of W-HfC while adhesive strength was found to be similar in both coating layers. The plasma torch test revealed good ablation resistance of the W-Carbide hybrid coating layers. The relatively high performance W-ZrC coating layer at the elevated temperature is thought to be attributed to both the strengthening effect of ZrC particle remained in the layer and the formation of ZrO2 phase with high temperature stability.

  • Fastener tapes are widely used as auxiliary materials in textile products, and military textiles products are also applied. However, in Korea, the HL3-WA class of KS K 1309 was applied to military uniforms without consideration of the operating environment. Instead of adopting the standard of initial strength for Korean military uniforms, the US military applied the value after 3 washings, and presented different properties according to the items. Also in Japan, the standard was applied differently according to products in general clothing. The purpose of this study in to examine the quality level of fastener tapes used for military materials. The changes of tensile shear strength and peel strength of military and commercial fastener tape were studied after washing. As a result, the initial strength of the current military fastener tapes was higher than commercial one, but the strength retention rate was rapidly decreased as the number of washing. So it was confirmed that the decrease in strength was relatively lower than commercial one. It is necessary to improve the durability by adjusting the adhesive strength to suit the purpose of the product, and it is necessary to consider the priority of maintaining the durability according to the initial performance and repeated use according to the use environment, respectively.

  • VPH (Volume Phase Hologram) grating is one of the transmission gratings and is known as its remarkable efficiency (>90%). It has two different densities of gelatins causing interference patterns. The VPH grating is favored in many astronomical instruments these days and also IGRINS, which is up coming near infrared high-resolution spectroscope expected to see the first light next year, uses the VPH grating as its cross-disperser. The infrared astronomical instruments operate at cryogenic temperature (~100K) in order to cut down thermal noise and the optical components of IGIRNS will be operated at 130K. The VPH grating is sandwiched in between fused silica or glass and glued together using optical adhesive. IGRINS is expected to go through 50 times of thermal cycling in 10 years including the performance test and this research is to check whether the physical characteristic such as the adhesion or dichromatic gelatin does not break and change from the several cryogenic thermal cycling. The two identical test gratings provided from Kaiser Optical System, Inc. are used in this test. One VPH grating is cooled down to 100K for 2 hours with maximum dT/dt = 5 and warmed up to the room temperature and another grating is kept stored in the room temperature and used as a control sample. In order to check the change, we inspected the grating with eyes and checked its efficiency and transmission at the room temperature every 10 cycling. From the 40 times of cryogenic temperature cool down cycling, the VPH grating showed no signs of change within the error compared to the control sample. We concluded the VPH grating is durable through several cryogenic thermal cycling.

  • In order to detect damage in early stages and properly maintaining structures, the structural health monitoring technology is employed. In most cases, active-sensing SHM needs many piezoelectric (PZT) sensors and actuators. Thus, if there is a defect on PZT used for active-sensing SHM, the structural status could be misclassified. This study, for reliable SHM performance, investigated to detect defects of sensors by using the admittance-based sensor diagnostics. This study also introduced an algorithm that can diagnose sensor defects based only on data measured from the sensors in case that information about the changes in adhesive and environmental investigation, this study confirms that the proposed algorithm could be efficiently applied to real-world structures in which a significant temperature variation could take place.

  • Tensile strength of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is approximately 10 times higher than that of the steel reinforcement, but the design strength of CFRP is normally limited by unpredictable bond failure between RC and CFRP. Many researches concerned with bond behavior between RC and CFRP have been carried out to prevent the bond failure of RC beam strengthened by CFRP, but the national design code for design bond strength of CFRP has not been constructed. In this study, three beam specimens strengthened by CFRP under the parameters of bonded length were tested to derive the design bond strength of CFRP for the RC flexural members. Each bonded length was calculated based on the bond strength of JCI and CFRP manufacturing company. Also, another two beam specimens strengthened by CFRP were tested to inspect the construction environment effects such as mixing error of epoxy resin, and the amount of epoxy primer. From the test results, it is concluded that the maximum design bond strength of CFRP to RC flexural member is considered to be $\tau$a =8 kgf/㎠.

  • This study is about appling non-exposure waterproofing method which combines the Cement Polymer Modified Waterproof Membrane coating and Selfadhesive Rubberized Asphalt sheet to the Roof Structure, Because there are a lot of problems in previous methods. So We had the performance tests using waterproofing method which combines two materials, and we analyzed the results. This study showed us very important results. We had bond strength test and tensile test under high, normal and low temperature, and the results were successful. And we also tested for coping with crack and movement. We found that tested materials were safe in those conditions. I think that Non-Exposure waterproofing method which combines the Cement Polymer Modified Waterproof Membrane coating and Selfadhesive Rubberized Asphalt sheet is available to concrete structure.
