  • Robot are necessary to automate the work on a vertical plane of work piece to produce a large structure like a ship, so that a permanent magnet wheel has been attempted to be used for a mobile robot. Its adhesive power was enhanced by restricting the occurrence direction of magnetic flow. Furthermore a method which weakened the adhesive force was developed for easy detachement of the wheel by changing magnetic flow with metal pin. To measure the characteristics of the adhesive and detaching farces, a load call and a gaussmeter were used. The result showed that the adhesive power was reduced to 1/3 of normal state by using 4 inducing pins.

  • To prepare an acrylic type pressure-sensitive adhesive, quarternary polymers were synthesized from butyl acrylate (BA), 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (2-EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA). The quarternary polymers were identified by FT-IR and Molecular weight was measured by Gel Pearmeation Chromatography. Also, viscosity, solid content and peel strength were examined. The peel strength was 160 $g_{f}/25$ mm when the volume ratio of feed monomer to solvent was 1.3:1, and the ratio was relevant to commercial usage. The pot life of adhesive was 30 sec at the 50 m/min of heat treatment rate at, and it indicated that the minimum drying time was 30 sec. In weathering resistance test, peel strength of $160{\sim}180$ $g_{f}/25$ mm after 1000 h, with no residual remains on the adhesive surface.

  • The objective of the current study is to characterize the long-term stability and efficacy of a structural adhesive assembly under static load. An apparatus was designed to be used in the Instron tensile test machine that would allow for real time modeling of the failure characteristics of an assembly utilizing a moisture- cure adhesive which was bonded to concrete. A regression model was developed that followed a linear - natural log function which was used to predict the expected life of the assembly. Evaluations at different curing times confirmed the structure was more robust with longer cure durations prior to loading. Finally, the results show that under the conditions the assembly was tested, there was only a small amount of inelastic creep and the regression models demonstrated the potential for a stable structure lasting several decades.

  • Effects of spangle size and crystallographic characteristics on the surface appearance, galling properties, and adhesive strength of hot-dip galvanized steel sheets have been investigated. Both spangle size and crystallographic orientation measured by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were identified as critical factors influencing the galvanized coating performance. By decreasing the spangle size, surface appearance and galling properties related to the friction coefficient were significantly improved. However, low temperature adhesive-strength with small spangle galvanized steel sheets showed lower values compared to commercially used galvanized coating. The variation of adhesive strength in terms of spangle size has been clarified.

  • In electric motor coaches, the rolling stocks move by the adhesive effort between rail and driving wheel. Generally, the adhesive effort is defined by the function of both the weight of electric motor coach and the adhesive effort between rails and driving wheel. The characteristics of adhesive effort is strongly affected by the conditions between rails and driving wheel. When the adhesive effort decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. This paper proposes a re-adhesion control algorithm which uses the maximum adhesive effort by instantaneous estimation of adhesion force using load torque disturbance observer. Based on this estimated adhesive effort, the re-adhesion control Is peformed to obtain the maximum transfer of the tractive effort.

  • Due to pronounced mechanical performance and being environmental friendly, aqueous polymer isocyanate adhesive (API) has been widely applied in the production of formaldehyde-free wood products. In this study, flame retardant formaldehyde-free plywood was prepared by incorporation of flame retardants into the API adhesive. Partially phosphorylated poly (vinyl alcohol) (PPVA) which was prepared by reacting poly (vinyl alcohol) with phosphoric acid was used to replace PVA in API formula. In addition, Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) was chosen as additive flame retardant, replacing traditional filler CaCO3 in API adhesive formula. And then, the flame retardant API adhesive with main agent (PPVA replacing PVA70wt.%, SBR emulsion 30wt.%), curing agent 10wt.% (accounts for of the main agent), and 20wt.% LDHs (accounts of the main agent) was used to prepare flame retardant plywood. The effect of application of PPVA and Mg-Al LDH on bonding strength of plywood was investigated. The flammability characteristics of the plywood were determined by cone calorimeter test (CCT). The results revealed that compared with the plywood prepared with API adhesive, the use of PPVA and LDH enhanced the flame retardancy of plywood without negatively affecting bonding strength. The CCT tests indicated that the heat release and smoke production flame retardant API plywood were lower than those of the ordinary API glued plywood. Promising developments for flame retardant API adhesive were expected in future applications of flame retardant formaldehyde-free plywood.

  • In this paper, novel carbon nanotube (CNT)-filled Solderable electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) and joining process have been developed. To investigate the bonding characteristics of CNT-filled Solderable ECA, three types of Solderable ECAs with different CNT weight percent (0, 0.1, 1wt%) were formulated. For a joining process, the quad flat package (QFP) chip was used. The QFP chip had a size of $14{\times}14{\times}2.7$ mm and a 1 mm lead pitch. The test board had a Cu daisy-chained pattern with 18 ${\mu}m$ thick. After the bonding process, the bonding characteristics such as morphology of conduction path, electrical resistance and pull strength were measured for each formulated ECAs. As a result, the electrical and mechanical bonding characteristics for a QFP joints using CNT-filled ECA were improved about 10% compared to those of QFP joints using ECA without CNT.

  • Recently, many structures using lightweight materials have been developed. This study was conducted by using Al6061-T6 and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), two common lightweight materials. In addition, the failure characteristics of an interface bonded between a single material and a heterogeneous bonding material were analyzed. The specimens bonded with CFRP and Al6061-T6 were utilized by the combination of the heterogeneous bonding material. The specimens had a double cantilevered shape and the bonding between the materials was achieved by applying a structural adhesive. The experiments were conducted in opening mode: the lower part of the samples was fixed, while their upper part was subjected to a forced displacement of 3 mm/min by using a tensile tester. Under the tested amount of strength, energy release rate, and considering the specimens' fracture characteristics in opening mode, the specimen "CFRP-Al" presented the maximum stress, followed by "Al" and "CFRP". We can hence conclude that the inhomogeneous material "CFRP-Al" is useful for the construction of lightweight structures bonded with structural adhesive.

  • The optical performance of the mirror for satellite camera is highly dependent on the adhesive properties between the mirror and its support. In order to design a mirror with high optical performance, the mechanical properties of adhesives should be well defined. In this research, the mechanical properties of three kinds of space adhesives are studied. In case of the materials which show nearly incompressible behavior such as space adhesives, it is important to measure shear modulus which governs deviatoric stress components. Shear moduli of the adhesives are determined by using single lap adhesively bonded joint. For the shear tests, several points have been selected from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ which is operating temperature range of the adhesive. The shear modulus of each adhesive is expressed as a function of temperature. Characteristics of the adhesives are discussed regarding their temperature sensitivity. The analysis results of RMS wavefront error w.r.t shear modulus are presented.

  • In this study, the adhesive fracturing characteristics of a DCB specimen due to single and heterogeneous bonding materials under tearing load was investigated. The experiments were conducted to examine the fracturing properties of the adhesive DCB specimen. As an experimental condition, a forced displacement of 3mm/min was applied to one side while the other side was fixed. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the AL6061-T6 material was superior to the CFRP material in terms of maximum stress, specific strength, and energy release rate when compared to the adhesive fracturing property of a single material. We tested CFRP-AL, a heterogeneous bonding material, and compared its experimental results to the results from the single materials. Based on these results, CFRP-AL with a heterogeneous bonding material was observed to have the superior structural safety compared to single materials for the mode III fracture type.
