  • 2D SiC fiber-SiC (SiC/SiC) composites were fabricated via slurry infiltration and a stacking process. The effects of the additive composition and content in SiC slurries and the effect of the sintering time on the sintered density and strength of SiC/SiC composites were investigated. A slurry containing $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3-MgO$ (AYM) additives led to a higher strength compared to a slurry containing $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3-CaO$ (AYC) additives. The sintered density increased as the sintering time increased and showed a maximum (>98%) at 4 h. In contrast, the flexural strength increased as the sintering time increased and showed a maximum (615 MPa) at 6 h. The relative density and flexural strength increased as the additive content increased.

  • Aminolysis of various carboxyl-containing ester substrates by triamines was kinetically studied in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA) or in the presence of sulfuric acid and potassium iodide (KI). In the presence of TSA or KI, the pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_o$) were proportional to the total amine concentration ($N_o$). This stands in marked contrast with the corresponding reactions carried out with sulfuric acid added as the sole additive, in which saturation kinetic behavior of ko with respect to No was manifested. This indicates that complex formation between the ester substrate and the amine is greatly suppressed by the addition of TSA or KI. The second-order rate constants obtained in the presence of TSA or KI were substantially greater than those measured in the absence of any additive. These kinetic features were explained in terms of tight interaction between the protonated amines with I- or TSA-. Thus, the results were related to the hydrogen bonding that involves DMSO, bisulfate ion, I-, TSA-, and the protonated forms of triamines.

  • This study was carried out to get the genetic information on the germination rate and fat acidity after 12 weeks' storage at $35^{\circ}C$. Germination rate decreased with longer storage period, while fat acidity increased. Germination rate was higher in the order of Koshihikari, Hanmaeum and Unkwangbyeo after 12 weeks' storage at $35^{\circ}C$. Fat acidity of Koshihikari and Hanmaeum was gradually increased, but that of Unkwangbyeo was dramatically increased after 4 weeks' storage at $35^{\circ}C$. The genetic mode on germination rate and fat acidity using the joint scaling test was shown to be additive-dominance gene effects. Additive([d]) effect was higher than dominance effect([h]) in all crosses. The average degree of dominance, [h]/[d], was less than 1, indicating that germination rate and fat acidity was partially dominant. Germination rate and fat acidity based on frequency distribution of 2 crosses were quantitative characters expressed by polygenes.

  • Fly ash and betonite samples were selected and characteristics of them were investigated. Fly ash was found to be similar to bentonite in particle size distribution but quite different in microstructure. The most special aspect of fly ash was high alkalinity of its solution. Distribution coefficients of Cs and Co on the samples were measured to survey the effects of mixing. Fly ash showed higher distribution coefficient of Co than that of Cs. Through various experiments, factors affecting the distribution coefficients of Co and Cs on mixture of bentonite and fly ash were identified. Comparison of the distribution coefficients of Cs on fly ash and bentonite mixture with those on sand and bentonite mixture suggests that fly ash would be useful as an efficient additive of backfill material if pertinent mixing ratio was chosen.

  • Seahorses have long been used as ornamental and medicinal products. The sea horse Hippocampus abdominalis has a beautiful color and unique shape and is also used for ornamental purposes and as a traditional medicine in China. This study examined the value of H. abdominalis as a health functional food or food additive. H. abdominalis was hydrolyzed using seven proteases: flavourzyme, neutrase, alcalase, trypsin, kojizyme, pepsin and protamex. The yields of all of the enzyme hydrolysates were higher than that of the aqueous extract. Of the enzymatic hydrolysates, seahorse Protamex hydrolysate (SHP) gave the highest yield and had excellent antioxidant and angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitory activities. It protected Vero cells against oxidative by 2,2-azobis-(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) and antihypertension in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats. This study attempted to demonstrate H. abdominalis as a health functional food or food additive in the future.

  • Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is being considered as a technology to replace the conventional manufacturing process of titanium alloys. However, coarse β grains, which can extend through several deposited materials, result in strong textures and anisotropy. As a solution, we study the plastic deformation effects of ultrasonic needle peening (UNP) on the microstructure. UNP treated materials deform plastically and the dislocation density increases. Fine α+α' grains with low aspect ratio are observed in the UNP treated specimens. UNP treated WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys have higher strength and lower elongation than those characteristics of WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Due to UNP treatment, the z-axis directional specimens exhibit a greater effect of reducing elongation than do the x-axis directional specimens. The UNP treatment produces fine grains in proportion to the number of times UNP is performed, thereby increasing strength. UNP processes produce a large number of dislocations in the WAAM Ti-6Al-4V alloys, with the most dislocations being formed at the surface.

  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx; NO and NO2) are major air pollutants and can cause harmful effects on the human body. Electron Beam Flue Gas Treatment (EBFGT) is a technology that generates electrons with an energy of 0.5-1 MeV using electron accelerators and effectively processes exhaust gases. In this study, NOx was removed using an electron beam accelerator with spraying additives (NaOH and NH4OH). NO and NO2 were 100% and more than 94% removed, respectively, at an electron beam absorbed dose of 20 kGy and an additive concentration of 0.02 M (mol/L). In most cases, NOx was removed better with lower initial NOx concentrations and higher electron beam absorbed doses. As the irradiation strength (mA) of the electron beam increases, the probability of electron impact on the material accordingly rises, which may lead to increase removal efficiency. The results of the present study show that the continuous electron beam process using additives achieved more effective removal efficiency than either individual process (wet-scrubbing or EB irradiation only).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sample thickness and support structure on the residual stress of Hastelloy X superalloy samples fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), which is an additive manufacturing process. The residual stresses of LPBF samples with different thicknesses and support structures were measured using X-ray diffraction. The results revealed that as the thickness of sample increased from 2.5 mm to 20 mm, its tensile residual stress gradually decreased from 443.5 MPa to 182.2 MPa. Additionally, the residual stress in the bottom region of sample was higher than that in the top region, and the residual stress difference in the bottom and top regions became more pronounced as the sample thickness decreased. The residual stress of LPBF sample also varied depending on the structure of support. The residual stress of sample decreased with increasing contract area between the sample and the support, because the larger contract area led to smaller temperature gradient throughout the sample.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of amino acid additives to weaned piglet diets on the pH and volatile fatty acids of pig slurries. A total of 135 weaned 22 -day-old piglets (Yorkshire x Landrace x Duroc) were used in this 56-d study. The three dietary treatments were as follows: (1) Control as a basal diet, (2) 1% amino acid additive and (3) 2% amino acid additive. Both pH and acetic acid values at 71 and 78 days were significantly different in all treatment groups (p<0.05). In addition, significant differences in propionic acid values were observed among treatment groups at 64 and 78 days (p<0.05). However, pH, acetic acid, and propionic acid values did not differ between 1% and 2% amino acid treatment groups. In conclusion, adding 1% and 2% amino acid to weaned piglet diets reduced the pH, acetic acid and propionic acid contents of pig slurries by acting as a probiotic. This may help formulate increase management strategies for improving the pig housing environment.

  • Streamflow forecasting plays a crucial role in water resource control, especially in highly urbanized areas that are very vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall event. In addition to providing the accurate prediction, the evaluation of effects and importance of the input predictors can contribute to water manager. Recently, machine learning techniques have applied their advantages for modeling complex and nonlinear hydrological processes. However, the techniques have not considered properly the importance and uncertainty of the predictor variables. To address these concerns, we applied the GA-BART, that integrates a genetic algorithm (GA) with the Bayesian additive regression tree (BART) model for hourly streamflow forecasting and analyzing input predictors. The Jungrang urban basin was selected as a case study and a database was established based on 39 heavy rainfall events during 2003 and 2020 from the rain gauges and monitoring stations. For the goal of this study, we used a combination of inputs that included the areal rainfall of the subbasins at current time step and previous time steps and water level and streamflow of the stations at time step for multistep-ahead streamflow predictions. An analysis of multiple datasets including different input predictors was performed to define the optimal set for streamflow forecasting. In addition, the GA-BART model could reasonably determine the relative importance of the input variables. The assessment might help water resource managers improve the accuracy of forecasts and early flood warnings in the basin.
