Dynamic chanracterisitcs and control of a submerged working robot manipulator have been investigated for articulated type robot manipulator with three revoluted joints. A dynamic equation of the manipulator has been derived. The dynamic equation includes not only mass matrix, centrifugal and Coriolis terms and gravity terms but also added mass, buoyant force and drag force terms, which are important terms for underwater motion description. A series of simulations using computed torque method have been performed for the cases of straight and circular trajectory motion controls. The results of this study show that the dynamic characteristics of the submerged working robot manipulator are very different from that of the manipulator which works in air. The influences of added mass, buoyant force and drag force terms to the total required torques have been discussed as distribution ratios to the total required torques.

To coordinate the robot manipulator along the desired trajectory, the exact model of the dynamics is required. The added mass and added moment of inertia, buoyancy, drag force, and friction mainly affect the dynamics of the undersea robot manipulator, and they are quite complex and unknown. In this reason. the exact model of the undersea robot manipulator is difficult to obtain. In this paper, instead of having efforts to get the exact model of the robot dynamics, a control-based approach was performed. We modeled the dynamics of the undersea robot manipulator whose parameters are unknown, and then applied a proposed direct adaptive and robust control, which is different from previous studies. The unknown added mass, and added moment of inertia, drag force and friction are estimated by the direct adaptive control scheme, and the drag force which is dominant disturbance is compensated by the robust control. Also, stability of the proposed control scheme is analyzed.

There are many massive components added on the railway overhead-line. These components cause larger fluctuations of contact forces, which are due to wave reflections and Doppler effects when a high-speed train passes those. In this paper, mathematical formula are derived for the relation between the added mass and contact force fluctuations. Using the derived formula, we calculate a added mass on the overhead-line which cause amplification factor to become 2.5. German design practice requires that amplification factor due to the wave reflection should be less than 2.5 to obtain good current collection performance. To show the validity of the formula, simulation results are compared with the calculation results. Simulation results showed that contact force fluctuations grow rapidly when an added mass is larger than the calculation result. Therefore, the simple form of formula can be used for estimating maximum added mass not to cause large fluctuations of contact forces in early design phase.
This study investigates the identification of added mass and its location in the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) beam structures. The main emphasis of this paper is to ascertain the importance of inclusion of rotational degrees of freedom (dofs) in the introduction of added mass or damage identification. Two identification indices that include the rotational dofs have been introduced in this paper: the modal force index (MFI) and the modal rotational curvature index (MRCI). The MFI amplifies damage signature using undamaged numerical stiffness matrix which is related to changes in the altered mode shapes from the original mode shapes. The MRCI is obtained by using a higher derivative of rotational mode shapes. Experimental and numerical results are compared with the existing methods leading to a conclusion that the contributions of the rotational modes play a key role in the identification of added mass. The authors believe that the similar results are likely in the case of damage identification also.

Hybrid mass dampers consist of passive tuned mass dampers and active mass dampers. They have the advantage that passive tuned mass dampers are still operated even when active mass dampers are stopped by excessive disturbances or power failure. This paper begins first with the comparative analysis of tuned mass dampers, hybrid mass dampers, and active mass dampers. Next more detailed study is carried out on the hybrid mass dampers: cascade hybrid mass dampers (CHMD) and active tuned mass dampers (ATMD). CHMD is regarded as more reasonable device because of its lighter active mass than ATMD's. However CHMD can not neglect stroke saturation problem caused by the length limitation of active damper mass. We compensate the saturation problem with nonlinear restoring force. The restoring force is calculated based on the states and phases of active mass dampers and added to the control force. It is shown that the presented compensation method prevents CHMD from saturation behavior without apparent changes of control force and responses compared to those in case of not considering the saturation problem.
An analytical model of liquid sloshing is developed to consider the energy-loss effect through a partially submerged porous baffle in a horizontally oscillating rectangular tank. The nonlinear boundary condition at the porous baffle is derived to accurately capture both the added inertia effects and the energy-loss effects from an equivalent non-linear drag law. Using the eigenfunction expansion method, the horizontal hydrodynamic force (added mass, damping coefficient) on both the wall and baffle induced by the fluid motion is assessed for various combinations of porosity, submergence depth, and the tank's motion amplitude. It is found that a negative value for the added mass and a sharp peak in the damping curve occur near the resonant frequencies. In particular, the hydrodynamic force and free surface amplitude can be largely reduced by installing the proper porous baffle in a tank. The optimal porosity of a porous baffle is near P=0.1.
The radiation of water waves by a heaving truncated circular cylinder with damping plate is solved in the frame of the three-dimensional linear potential theory. The damping plate has a distinct advantage in reducing the motion response of a floating circular cylinder by increasing the added mass and the damping coefficient. Using the matched eigenfunction expansion method, the characteristics of hydrodynamic added mass and the damping coefficient are investigated with various system parameters, such as the radius and submergence depth of the damping plate. It is found that both added mass and the damping coefficient are significantly increased due to the arranged features of the larger damping plate with shallow submergence, which are positive factors as a motion reduction device of the floating offshore platform. Also the numerical results for an oscillating submerged disk show that the added mass is negative and that the damping coefficient has a peak value at resonant frequency when submergence depth is sufficiently small.
In order to improve the ship maneuverability, It is important to estimate precisely the hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass forces acting on a ship especially in shallow waters, and simple methods for predicting such hydrodynamic forces Is also very desirable. In the previous paper using 3-Dimension potential flow theory, it has been demonstrated that potential calculation is available to estimate added mass coefficients. The present work is aimed at the suggestion of the simplified formulas for predicting the translation and lateral motion of added mass coefficients in shallow water. So, 3-D potential flow theory is also used to calculate the added mass coefficients in deep and shallow waters for Series 60 model which has 5 different kinds of block coefficients (0.6-0.8), SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. After some series computation, simplified formulas for Predicting the added mass force in shallow waters is suggested based on the computation results of Series 60 model. The formulas consist of the combination of principal dimensions and the water depth; d/B, Cb, d/H. The predicted results are compared with the Computation results for SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. The precision of predicted results by simplified formulas are good enough for the practical use. (d/B : draft-Breadth ratio, d/H draft-Water depth ratio, Cb : Block coefficients).

As the motion response of heave for floating bodies on the water surface is relatively large near the natural frequency, it is necessary to predict its value accurately from the stage of initial design. Bodies accelerating in fluid experience force acted upon by the fluid, and this force is quantified by using the concept of added mass. For predicting the natural frequency of heave we need to know the added mass, which is given as a function of frequency, and hence the natural frequency can be obtained through only by iteration process, as was pointed out by Lee (2008). His method was applied to circular cylinders, and two dimensional cylinders of Lewis form by making use of the Ursell-Tasai method in the previous works, Lee and Lee (2013), Kim and Lee (2013), and Song and Lee (2015). In this work, a similar algorithm employing the concept of strip method is adopted for predicting the heave natural frequency of KCS(KRISO Container Ship), and the obtained computational result was compared with other existing experimental data, and the agreement seems reasonable. Furthermore, through the error analysis, it is shown that why the frequency corresponding to the local minimum of the added mass and the natural frequency are very close. And it seems probable that we can predict the heave natural frequency if we know only the local minimum of added mass and the corresponding frequency under a condition, which holds for ship-like bodies in general.

The present study proposes a time domain model for the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) simulation of a catenary riser under the combination of the current and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. In this model, the hydrodynamic force of VIV comprises excitation force, hydrodynamic damping and added mass, which are taken as functions of the non-dimensional frequency and amplitude ratio. The non-dimensional frequency is related with the response frequency, natural frequency, lock-in range and the fluid velocity. The relatively oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion is taken into account in the fluid velocity. Considering that the added mass coefficient and the non-dimensional frequency can affect each other, an iterative analysis is conducted at each time step to update the added mass coefficient and the natural frequency. This model is in detail validated against the published test models. The results show that the model can reasonably reflect the effect of the added mass coefficient on the VIV, and can well predict the riser's VIV under stationary and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. Based on the model, this study carries out the VIV simulation of a catenary riser with harmonic vessel motion. By analyzing the bending moment near the touchdown point, it is found that under the combination of the ocean current and oscillatory flow the vessel motion may decrease the VIV response, while increase the excited frequencies. In addition, the decreasing rate of the VIV under vessel surge is larger than that under vessel heave at small vessel motion velocity, while the situation becomes opposite at large vessel motion velocity.
