  • In this paper, an automated adaptive mesh generation scheme, based on an advancing-front-Delaunay method, is developed for finite element simulation of three dimensional bulk metal forming processes. During the simulation, the finite element mesh system is adaptively remeshed whenever the mesh is unacceptable. Several schemes are developed such as curvature compensation scheme to minimize volume loss, optimal smoothing scheme to improve element quality, etc. The presented approach is evaluated and applied to automatic forging simulation in order to demonstrate the effect of the developed schemes.

  • Adaptive code rate change schemes in DS-SSMA systems are proposed. In the proposed schemes, the error correcting code rate is changed according to the channel states. Two channel states having significant effects on the bit error probability are considered: one is the effective number of users, and the other is the fading environment. These channel states are estimated based on retransmission requests. The criterion for the change of the code rate is to maximize the throughput under given error bound.

  • In this series of two papers, adaptive code rate change schemes in DS-SSMA systems are proposed. In the proposed schemes the error correcting code rate is changed according to the channel states.   • Reversible watermarking is an open problem in information hiding field, with embedding the encoded bit '1' or '0' into some sensitive images, such as the law enforcement, medical records and military images. The technique can retrieve the original image without distortion, after the embedded message has been extracted. Histogram-based scheme is a remarkable breakthrough in reversible watermarking schemes, in terms of high embedding capacity and low distortion. This scheme is lack of capacity control due to the requirement for embedding large-scale data, because the largest hidden capacity is decided by the amount of pixels with the peak point. In this paper, we propose a reversible watermarking scheme to enlarge the number of pixels with the peak point as large as possible. This algorithm is based on an adaptive edge-guided interpolation, furthermore, hides messages by interpolation-error, i.e. the difference between the original and interpolated image value. Simulation results compared with other state-of-the-art reversible watermarking schemes in this paper demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

A Bandwidth Estimation Scheme to Improve the QoE of HTTP Adaptive Streaming in the Multiple Client Environment

  • HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) is a promising technology for delivering video content over the Internet. HAS-based video streaming solutions rely on bandwidth estimation to select the appropriate video bitrate. Video streaming solutions that consider network conditions provide users with seamless video playback. However, when multiple clients compete for a common bottleneck link, conventional bandwidth estimation schemes that consider only one client overestimate the network bandwidth due to the ON-OFF traffic pattern. The bandwidth overestimation can cause Quality of Experience (QoE) degradation, such as unnecessary changes in video quality, and unfairness of video quality. In this paper, we propose a client-side bandwidth estimation scheme to obtain a better QoE of HAS in the multiple-client environment. The proposed scheme differentiates the client buffer status according to the buffer occupancy, and then estimates the available network bandwidth based on the buffer status and segment throughput. We evaluate the performance of HAS implemented in the ns-3 network simulator. Simulation results show that compared with the conventional schemes, the proposed scheme can enhance the QoE.

Sub-band Spreading Technique for Adaptive Modulation in OFDM Systems

  • We propose a sub-band spreading technique for adaptive modulation (AM) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in order to reduce signaling overheads and to average frequency selective fading channels causing different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values for subcarriers in each subband. The conventional sub-band based AM schemes can also reduce signaling overheads and complexity for allocating a resource per sub-band at a time. However, they may suffer from the channel variation in a sub-band when the sub-band size is larger than the channel coherence bandwidth (BW). The sub-band spreading at the transmitter enables the received symbols in each sub-band to have an identical reliability even in a frequency selective fading channel. We rigorously analyze the averaged SNR value at the receiver of the sub-band spreading system and the analyzed average SNR in a sub-band is used for an adaptation criterion. The proposed AM scheme outperforms the conventional sub-band based OFDM scheme without spreading, and it can yield better throughput performance than the conventional subcarrier based AM schemes when we consider the signaling overheads.

  • Up to now, using adaptive control method, Identification deals with system whose entire state variables and prameters are accessible for measurement. In practical situations, all the state variables cannot be measured and it is impossible to directly apply since the parameters of the system are unknown. Therefore, in this paper, using only input-output data, such a model of the system is not available since the parameters of the system are unknown. this leads to the concept of an adptive observer in which both the parameters and the state variable of the system are identified simultaniously. Lyapunov's direct method and Kalman-Yakubovich (K-Y) lemma are employed to ensure the stability of this schemes. The feature is that the signal and adaptive gain which is generated from filter is imposed upon feedback vector and then state variables and the unknown parameters can be identified. To show the usefulness of the proposed schemes, computer simulation result of unknown second-order system shows the effectiveness of the proposed schems.

  • In the current Internet, it is difficult for an Internet Phone to guarantee the QoS due to variable network conditions such as packet loss rate, delay and bandwidth. In addition, the QoS of an Internet Video Phone is more hard to guarantee because of video data. In this paper, we investigate application-level QoS control schemes that can adapt to variable network conditions, and describe an error control scheme and a congestion control scheme. Based on these QoS control schemes, we have designed and implemented an Internet Video Phone System that supports adaptive audio and video delivery. Through experiments, we found that the Internet Video Phone can reduce the packet loss rate considerably as well as adjust the transmission rate considering other TCP flows.

  • Adaptive control systems based upon the command generator tracker(CGT) approach have attracted considerable interest because of the simple structure of its adaptive controller. Some attempts to such improve the adaptive control algorithm, for the sake of the application to broader class of plants, are made. Recently, Su and Sobel(1992) proposed that those schemes can be treated by an unified theory using a metasystem representation with some types of supplementary dynamics. However, in their method, it is difficult to find the dynamic compensator, which is proper and output feedback stabilizable, for the uncertain plant. This paper proposes a new design method of such supplementary dynamics and some parameters of adaptive control system for linear time invariant SISO plants. The method gives a concrete and systematic design method using only a few priori knowledge of the plant.

  • We propose an adaptive nonlinear control algorithm for compensation of the stick-slip friction in a dynamic system. The friction force and mass of the system are estimated and compensated by adaptive control law. Especially, as the nonlinear control input in a small tracking error zone is enlarged by the nonlinear function, the steady state error is significantly reduced. The proposed algorithm is a direct adaptive control method based on the Laypunov stability theory, and its convergence is guaranteed under the bounded noise or torque disturbance. We verified the performance of the proposed algorithm by computer simulation on one-DOF mechanical system with friction.
