  • The purpose of the study was to provide the actual data for designing adaptive dresses for the disabled elderly. In order to get the data, we had 3 parts of the procedure as follows ; 1. The survey of 205 nursing-care providers who take care of the disabled elderly in 1999. 2. Measuring 10 measurements of 80 disabled men and women each, 160 samples. 3. On the basis of data above, developing the adaptive dresses and doing the wearing-tests of those. The results are as follows ; 1. The most popular style for the disabled elderly in nursing facilities was non-collar pajama's. Specially, pajama style was needed for the disabled elderly being sick in bed, one-piece style was required for the disabled eldery with dementia. And the most desirable fabric function was a physiological comfortability. The most proper price required was about 20,000 won. 2. As Korean apparel industry use K.S. sizing system, we decided to use the same measurement to categorize the samples, bust and height. And according to the frequency in the size chart, we suggested the production size for the disabled eldery men and women. 3. After developing these adaptive dresses, the results of wearing-tests showed two kinds of problems. One was that of the sleeve length ; Actually, for the disabled elderly, the longer than the production size is the better for them. The other problem was revealed from subsidiay materials, fasteners.

  • The adaptive m filters is more effective than m filters when acoustic feedback exists, in which cause an order of a FIR filter must be very large if some of poles of the ideal control filter are near the unit circle. But the IIR filters may have stability problems especially when the adaptive algorithm is not converged. In this paper, a stabilizing procedure for adaptive IIR filters is proposed. In the beginning of the ANC system, it improve a stability by pulling the poles of the IIR filter to the center of the unit circle, and it returns the poles to their original positions after the filter converge. Computer simulations and experiments are performed to show the effectiveness of proposed schemes.

  • This paper presents a novel robust adaptive AC8B exciter system against synchronous generators for ships. A PID (proportional integral derivative) control framework, which is a part of the AC8B exciter system, is simply composed of nominal and auxiliary control configurations. For selecting these proper parameter values, the former is conventionally chosen based on the experience and knowledge of experts, and the latter is optimally estimated via a neural networks optimization procedure. Additionally, we propose an online parameter learning-based auxiliary control to practically cope with deterioration of control performance owing to uncertainty in electric generator systems. Such a control mechanism ensures the robustness and adaptability of an AC8B exciter to enhance control performance in real-time implementation. We carried out simulation experiments to test the reliability of the proposed robust adaptive AC8B exciter system and prove its superiority through a comparative study in which a conventional PID control-based AC8B exciter system is similarly applied to our simulation experiments under the same simulation scenarios.

  • In this paper, robust adaptive control algorithms which can be applied to unknown uncertain systems are suggested. Transform matrix for dividing states into "uncontrolled" states and "controlled" states and general searching procedure for the transform matrix which assign arbitrary n-1 eigen values for the uncontrolled subsystem of n-th order single-input single-output systems is also studied and utilized for the design of new-type controllers. We derived new-type control laws by using adaptive control theory and variable structure system and its stability is proved by using Lyapunov stability theory. From computer simulation results, we can see that the proposed adaptive control algorithm is robust and stable.s robust and stable.

  • Unstructured adaptive grid flow simulation is applied to the calculation of high speed compressible flow of inert and reactive gas mixtures. Computational results are presented for the case of premixed hydrogen-air supersonic flow over a 2-D wedge. In such a configuration, combustion may be triggered behind the oblique shock wave and transition to an oblique detonation wave is eventually obtained. It is shown that the solution adaptive procedure implemented is able to correctly define the important wave front.

  • A design methodology is presented to develop the hingeless control surfaces for MAV using adhesively bonded Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) actuators. These actuators have got the capability to deflect the trailing edge surfaces of the wing to attain the required maneuverability, besides achieving the set aerodynamic trim condition. A scheme involving design, analysis, fabrication and testing procedure has been adopted to realize the trailing edge morphing mechanism. The stiffness distribution of the composite MAV wing is tailored such that the induced deflection by piezoelectric actuation is approximately optimized. Through ground testing, the proposed concept has been demonstrated on a typical MAV structure. Electromechanical analysis is performed to evaluate the actuator performance and subsequently aeroelastic and 2D CFD analyses are carried out to see the functional requirements of wing trailing edge surfaces to behave as elevons. Efforts have been made to obtain the performance comparison of conventional control surfaces (elevons) with morphing wing trailing edge surfaces. A significant improvement in lift to drag ratio is noticed with morphed wing configuration in comparison to conventional wing. Further, it has been shown that the morphed wing trailing edge surfaces can be deployed as elevons for aerodynamic trim applications.

  • In this paper, adaptive evolutionary algorithm(AEA) is proposed, which uses both genetic algorithm(GA) with good global search capability and evolution strategy(ES) with good local search capability in an adaptive manner, when population evolves to the next generation. In the reproduction procedure, proportion of the population for GA and ES is adaptively determined according to their fitness. The AEA is used to design membership functions and scaling factors of the fuzzy logic controller(FLC). To evaluate the performance of the proposed FLC design method, we make an experiment on the FLC for the speed control of an actual DC series motor system with nonlinear characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed controller has better performance than PD controller.

  • Urban flood simulation plays a vital role in national flood early warning, prevention and mitigation. In recent studies on 2-dimensional flood modeling, the integrated run-off inundation model is gaining grounds due to its ability to perform in greater computational efficiency. The adaptive quadtree shallow water numerical technique used in this model implements the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) in this simulation, a procedure in which the grid resolution is refined automatically following the flood flow. The method discounts the necessity to create a whole domain mesh over a complex catchment area, which is one of the most time-consuming steps in flood simulation. This research applies the dynamic grid refinement method in simulating the recent extreme flood events in Metro Manila, Philippines. The rainfall events utilized were during Typhoon Ketsana 2009, and Southwest monsoon surges in 2012 and 2013. In order to much more visualize the urban flooding that incorporates the flow within buildings and high-elevation areas, Digital Surface Model (DSM) resolution of 5m was used in representing the ground elevation. Results were calibrated through the flood point validation data and compared to the present flood hazard maps used for policy making by the national government agency. The accuracy and efficiency of the method provides a strong front in making it commendable to use for early warning and flood inundation analysis for future similar flood events.

  • The multi scale wavelet-Galerkin method implemented in an adaptive manner has an advantage of obtaining accurate solutions with a substantially reduced number of interpolation points. The method is becoming popular, but its numerical efficiency still needs improvement. The objectives of this investigation are to present a new numerical scheme to improve the performance of the multi scale adaptive wavelet-Galerkin method and to give detailed implementation procedure. Specifically, the subdomain technique suitable for multiscale methods is developed and implemented. When the standard wavelet-Galerkin method is implemented without domain subdivision, the interaction between very long scale wavelets and very short scale wavelets leads to a poorly-sparse system matrix, which considerably worsens numerical efficiency for large-sized problems. The performance of the developed strategy is checked in terms of numerical costs such as the CPU time and memory size. Since the detailed implementation procedure including preprocessing and stiffness matrix construction is given, researchers having experiences in standard finite element implementation may be able to extend the multi scale method further or utilize some features of the multiscale method in their own applications.

  • The objective of this paper is to present an adaptive algorithm for computing the weight vector which provides a beam pattern having its maximum gain along the direction of the mobile target signal source in the presence of interfering signals within a cell. The conjugate gradient method (CGM) is modified in such a way that the suboptimal weight vector is produced with the computational load of O(16N), which has been found to be small enough for the real-time processing of signals in most land mobile communications with the digital signal processor (DSP) off the shelf, where N denotes the number of antenna elements of the array. The adaptive procedure proposed in this paper is applied to code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile communication system to show its excellent performance in terms of signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), bit error rate (BER), and capacity, which are enhanced by about 7 dB, ${\frac{1}{100}}$ times, and 7 times, respectively, when the number of antenna elements is 6 and the processing gain is 20 dB.
