  • The goal of this paper is to improve the watermarking performance using the following two methods; watermark estimation and low density parity check (LDPC) codes. For a blind watermark decoding, the power of a host image, which is hundreds times greater than the watermark power, is the main noise source. Therefore, a technique that can reduce the effect of the power of the host image to the detector is required. To this end, we need to estimate watermark from the watermarked image. In this paper, the watermark estimation is done by an adaptive estimation method with the generalized Gaussian distribution modeling of sub-band coefficients in the wavelet domain. Since the watermark capacity as well as the error rate can be improved by adopting optimum decoding principles and error correcting codes (ECC), we employ the LDPC codes for the decoding of the estimated watermark. Also, in LDPC codes, the knowledge about the noise power can improve the error correction capability. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm comparing to LDPC decoding with other estimation-based watermarking algorithms.

  • Blind equalization of communication channel is important because it does not need training signal, nor does it require a priori channel information. So, we can increase the bandwidth efficiency. The linear prediction error method is perhaps the most attractive in practice due to the insensitive to blind channel equalizer length mismatch as well as for its simple adaptive implementation. Unfortunately, the previous one-step prediction error method is known to be limited in arbitrary decision delay. In this paper, we propose method for fractionally spaced blind equalizer with arbitrary decision delay using one-step forward prediction error filter from second-order statistics of the received signals for SIMO channel. Our algorithm utilizes the forward prediction error as training signal and computes the best decision delay from all possible decision delay. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of our proposed algorithm.

  • Double-talk detection errors can result in either large residual echo or distorting the near-end talker's input speech. Thus accurate double-talk detection is an important problem in the acoustic echo canceller to improve the speech quality. In the double-talk detection algorithm using a cross-correlation coefficient, double-talk detection errors can occur in the initial convergence period of an adaptive filter or in noisy environment since the cross-correlation coefficient becomes large in such situations. In this paper, we propose a new double-talk detection algorithm based on the cross-correlation method using a normalized error signal power to reduce the double-talk detection errors. The experimental results have shown the performance improvement of an acoustic echo canceller as well as the noise-robustness of the proposed double-talk detector.

  • This paper concerns extracting 3D motion information from a 3D input device in real time focused to enabling effective human-computer interaction. In particular, we develop a novel algorithm for extracting 6 degrees-of-freedom motion information from a 3D input device by employing an epipolar geometry of stereo camera, color, motion, and structure information, free from requiring the aid of camera calibration object. To extract 3D motion, we first determine the epipolar geometry of stereo camera by computing the perspective projection matrix and perspective distortion matrix. We then incorporate the proposed Motion Adaptive Weighted Unmatched Pixel Count algorithm performing color transformation, unmatched pixel counting, discrete Kalman filtering, and principal component analysis. The extracted 3D motion information can be applied to controlling virtual objects or aiding the navigation device that controls the viewpoint of a user in virtual reality setting. Since the stereo vision-based 3D input device is wireless, it provides users with a means for more natural and efficient interface, thus effectively realizing a feeling of immersion.

  • Attenuation coefficients of medical ultrasound not only reflect the pathological information of tissues scanned but also provide the quantitative information to compensate the decay of backscattered signals for other medical ultrasound parameters. Based on the frequency-selective attenuation property of human tissues, attenuation estimation methods in spectral domain have difficulties for real-time implementation due to the complexicity while estimation methods in time domain do not achieve the compensation for the diffraction effect effectively. In this paper, we propose the modified VSA method, which compensates the diffraction with reference phantom in time domain, using adaptive bandpass filters with decreasing center frequencies along depths. The adaptive bandpass filtering technique minimizes the distortion of relative echogenicity of wideband transmit pulses and maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio due to the random scattering, especially at deeper depths. Since the filtering center frequencies change according to the accumulated attenuation, the proposed algorithm improves estimation accuracy and precision comparing to the fixed filtering method. Computer simulation and experimental results using tissue-mimicking phantoms demonstrate that the distortion of relative echogenicity is decreased at deeper depths, and the accuracy of attenuation estimation is improved by 5.1% and the standard deviation is decreased by 46.9% for the entire scan depth.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve target detection rate degradation due to direct blast in a bi-static sonar systems with high duty cycle using an adaptive filters. It is very important to suppress the direct blast in the aforementioned sonar systems because it has a fatal effect on the actual system operation. In this paper, the performance was evaluated by applying the Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) and Recursive Least Square (RLS) algorithms to the simulation and sea experimental data. The beam signals of the target and direct blast bearings were used as the input and desired signals, respectively. By optimizing the difference between the two signals, the direct blast is removed and only the target signal is remained. As a result of evaluating the results of the matched filter in the simulation, it was confirmed that the direct blast was removed to the noise level in both Linear Frequency Modultated (LFM) and Generalized Sinusoidal Frequency Modulated (GSFM), and in the case of GSFM, the target sidelobe decreased by more than 20 dB, thereby improving performance. In the sea experiment, it was confirmed that the LFM reduced the level of the transmitted direct wave by 10 dB, the GSFM reduced the level of the transmitted direct wave by about 4 dB, and the side lobe of the target decreased by about 4 dB, thereby improving the performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a VLSI architecture of hardware optimized high quality image signal processor for a Single-chip CMOS Image Sensor(CIS). The Single-chip CIS is usually used for mobile applications, so it has to be implemented as small as possible while maintaining the image quality. Several image processing algorithms are used in ISP to improve captured image quality. Among the several image processing blocks, demosaicing and image filter are the core blocks in ISP. These blocks need line memories, but the number of line memories is limited in a low cost Single-chip CIS. In our design, high quality edge-adaptive and cross channel correlation considered demosaicing algorithm is adopted. To minimize the number of required line memories for image filter, we share the line memories using the characteristics of demosaicing algorithm which consider the cross correlation. Based on the proposed method, we can achieve both high quality and low hardware complexity with a small number of line memories. The proposed method was implemented and verified successfully using verilog HDL and FPGA. It was synthesized to gate-level circuits using 0.25um CMOS standard cell library. The total logic gate count is 37K, and seven and half line memories are used.

  • This paper presents a digital auto-focusing method using a priori estimated point-spread-functions (PSF) database. The proposed algorithm efficiently removes out-of-focus blur in a degraded input image by selecting the optimal PSF from the database. The database consists of optical characteristics of image formation system. The PSF selection Process is performed based on a novel focusing measure. The proposed method includes a spatially adaptive filter for removing both noise and ringing artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed method efficiently removes out-of-focus blur using significantly reduced computational load compared with the existing method.

  • In this paper, a new method for detecting various objects that can be risks to safety navigation in sea environment is proposed. By analysing Infrared(IR) images obtained from various sea environments, we could find out that object regions include both horizontal and vertical direction edges while background regions of sea surface mainly include vertical direction edges. Therefore, we present an approach to detecting object regions considering horizontal and vertical edges. To this end, in the first step, image enhancement is performed by suppressing noises such as sea glint and complex clutters using a statistical filter. In the second step, a horizontal edge map and a vertical edge map are generated by 1-D Discrete Cosine Transform technique. Then, a combined map integrating the horizontal and the vertical edge maps is generated. In the third step, candidate object regions are detected by a adaptive thresholding method. Finally, exact object regions are extracted by eliminating background and clutter regions based on morphological operation.
