Ethernet passive optical network(EPON) is the next-generation technology for supporting services of high-quality at low-cost. In the EPON, all optical network units(ONUs) have to share a limited uplink channel for upstream data. In order to satisfy bandwidth demands of users on high-capacity local access networks(LANs), the optical line terminal(OLT) efficiently divides and allocates time slots of uplink channel to all ONUs. We discuss previous schemes for dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA), such as interleaved polling with adaptive cycle time(IPACT) and sliding cycle time(SLICT). In this paper, dynamic right sizing of maximum-windows(DRSM), as a novel bandwidth allocation service, is proposed for more effective and efficient time slot allocation of the uplink channel. DRSM which is based on past information of bandwidth allocated by OLT calculates maximum available bandwidth and dynamically alters the maximum window size for the next ONU. This scheme does not only exert every effort to meet bandwidth demands of ONUs with the possible scope, it also seeks fairness of bandwidth allocation among ONUs.
UHD content is characterized by higher bandwidth requirements to provide seamless playback. The existing HTTP adaptive streaming scheme periodically requests video segment of lower quality than the available bandwidth in the steady state. In the steady state, the On-Off pattern is repeated due to the difference of the available bandwidth and the encoding rate of the content. And the repeated Off interval is causing the problem that can not efficiently use the available bandwidth. In the wireless environment where the delay and loss rate are higher with large bandwidth fluctuations, this problem is exacerbated because the available bandwidth is estimated inaccurately. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a segment scheduling scheme for efficient bandwidth utilization of UHD contents streaming in wireless environment. Proposed scheme is a group segment that simultaneously reqeusts multiple segments in one request message in order to reduce frequency of OFF interval. Through simulation, Our scheme improves bandwidth utilization.
Recently, with the advance of computing and networking technique, the high speed internet becomes widespread, however, it is still hard job to do streaming the media which requires high network bandwidth over the internet. Previous researches for streaming over the internet mainly proposed techniques that controls the QoS(Quality of Service) of the media in proportion to the network status. Though, this could be the solution for the service provider while the service user who wants constant QoS may not satisfy with variable QoS. In the paper, we propose a network adaptive prefetching technique, NAP, for guarantee of constant QoS. The NAP prefetches frames by increasing the frame transmission rate while the available network bandwidth is high. The NAP uses the prefetched frames to guarantee the QoS while the available network bandwidth is low. The experiment result shows that the proposed NAP could guarantee the constant QoS by prefetching the frames adaptively to the network bandwidth with the characteristic of video stream.

Video streaming application such as YouTube is one of the most popular mobile applications. To adjust the quality of video for available network bandwidth, a streaming server provides multiple representations of video of which bit rate has different bandwidth requirements. A streaming client utilizes an adaptive bit rate scheme to select a proper video representation that the network can support. The download behavior of video streaming client player is governed by several parameters such as maximum buffer size. Especially, the size of the maximum playback buffer in the client player can greatly affect the user experience. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose the maximum buffer size optimization according to available network bandwidth and buffer status. Our simulation study shows that our proposed buffer size optimization scheme successfully mitigates playback stalls while preserving the similar quality of streaming video compared to existing ABR schemes.
Among the various PWM methods, the hysteresis-band current control PWM method is popularly used because of its simplicity of implementation, fast response characteristics and inherent peak current limiting capability. However, the current control PWM method with a fixed hysteresis-band has the disadvantage that switching frequency decreases and current ripple is high as the increasing of back-EMF. As a result, load current contains excess harmonics. This paper describes a adaptive hysteresis-bandwidth control algorithm so as to maintain the average switching frequency constant and decrease the current ripple where the hysteresis bandwidth is derived as a relation with the switching frequency. This control algorithm is applied to the surface-type brushless DC motor with separated winding and using the computer simulation, the validity of its algorithm is proved.
In this paper, we propose adaptive near-lossless image coding algorithm according to bandwidth while maintaining image quality. The proposed method adjusts error range using amounts of encoded bits and target bits at a slice encoding interval. Experimental results show that our proposed method not only almost fits compression into bandwidth, but also has better image quality.

This paper considers a home gateway(HG) that processes VOD services and controls home appliances. This paper proposes a PID algorithm-based adaptive bandwidth control method used in the HG, which guarantees QoS of incoming traffic such as VOD and real-time control data via control of outgoing traffic and have little effects on the CPU computation time. The proposed method is validated via implementation of real test environment.

Recently there is a growing Interest In mobile cellula r network providing multimedia service. However, the link bandwidth of mobile cellular network is not sufficient enough to provide satisfactory services to use rs. To overcome this problem, an adaptive framework has been proposed in this study, we propose a new method of estimating DPR(degradation period ratio) in an adaptive multimedia network where the bandwidth of ongoing call can be dynamically adjusted during its lifetime. DPR is a QoS(quality of service) parameter which represents the ratio of allocated bandwidth below a pre-defined target to the whole service time of a call. We improve estimation method of DPR using DTMC(discrete time Markov chain) model. We also calculate mean degradation period and degradation probability more precisely than in existing studies. Under Threshold CAC(call admission control) algorithm, we present analytically how to guarantee QoS to users and illustrate the method by numerical examples. The proposed method is expected to be used as one of CAC schemes in guaranteeing predefined QoS level of DPR

In this paper, we propose an effective memory reduction algorithm to reduce the amount of reference frame buffer and memory bandwidth in video encoder and decoder. In general video codecs, decoded previous frames should be stored and referred to reduce temporal redundancy. Recently, reference frames are recompressed for memory efficiency and bandwidth reduction between a main processor and external memory. However, these algorithms could hurt coding efficiency. Several algorithms have been proposed to reduce the amount of reference memory with minimum quality degradation. They still suffer from quality degradation with fixed-bit allocation. In this paper, we propose an adaptive block-based min-max quantization that considers local characteristics of image. In the proposed algorithm, basic process unit is $8{\times}8$ for memory alignment and apply an adaptive quantization to each $4{\times}4$ block for minimizing quality degradation. We found that the proposed algorithm could improve approximately 37.5% in coding efficiency, compared with an existing memory reduction algorithm, at the same memory reduction rate.

Due to the prevalence of powerful mobile terminals and the rapid advancements in wireless communication technologies, the wireless video streaming service has become increasingly more popular. Recent studies show that video streaming services via Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) are becoming more practical. TCP has more advantages than User Diagram Protocol (UDP), including firewall traversal, bandwidth fairness, and reliability. However, each video service shares an equal portion of the limited bandwidth because of the fair sharing characteristics inherent in TCP and this bandwidth fair sharing cannot always guarantee the video quality for each user. To solve this challenging problem, an Adaptive Multiple TCP (AM-TCP) scheme is proposed in this paper to guarantee the video quality for mobile devices in wireless networks. AM-TCP adaptively controls the number of TCP connections according to the video Rate Distortion (RD) characteristics of each stream and network status. The proposed scheme can minimize the total distortion of all participating video streams and maximize the service quality by guaranteeing the quality of each video streaming session. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the quality of video streaming in wireless networks.
