A new efficient hybrid/mixed thin~moderately thick plate bending element with 6-node (HM6-14) is formulated based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending theory. The convergence of this element is proved by error estimate theories and verified by patch test respectively. Numerical studies on such an element as HM6-14 demonstrate that it has remarkable convergence, invariability to geometric distorted mesh situations, to axial rotations, and to node positions, and no "locking" phenomenon in thin plate limit. The present element is suitable to many kinds of shape and thin~moderately thick plate bending problems. Further, in comparison with original hybrid/mixed plate bending element HP4, the present element yields an improvement of solutions. Therefore, it is an efficient element and suitable for the development of adaptive multi-field finite element method (FEM).
The analysis involves an adaptive grid that is created under a criterion of element categorization of filling states and locations in the total region at each time step. By using an adaptive grid wherein the elements, finer than those in internal and external regions, are distributed at the surface region through refinement and coarsening procedures, a more efficient analysis of transient fluid flow with free surface is achieved. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a dam is analyzed. The numerical results agree well with the theoretical solutions as well as with the experimental results. Through comparisons with the numerical results of several cases using different types of grids, the efficiency of the proposed technique is verified.

This paper proposes a novel asymmetrical interior permanent magnet (IPM) brushless DC (BLDC) motor structure, which utilizes half-type permanent magnet (PM) configuration and has asymmetrical side gaps (slot next to the PMs) for reducing torque ripples. This structure uses 24% less volume of PMs than conventional IPM BLDC motor with a full set of magnets. The characteristics of the proposed motor are compared with three other half-type IPM BLDC motors through finite elements method (FEM) analysis, and the usefulness of the proposed motor was verified through experimental evaluation on prototypes of the conventional motor and proposed motor under various torque load conditions. This research obtained a high-performance IPM BLDC motor while decreasing manufacturing cost at the same time.
A Thomson coil type actuator is applied as the driving unit in an arc eliminator system. To eliminate the arc efficiently, the speed of the actuator is required as fast as possible with certain limit of the exciting current. Therefore, the dynamic characteristics of the Thomson coil type actuator should be analyzed in an effective way. In this paper, a novel solving technique has been developed based on the equivalent circuit model which is set up by dividing the conducting plate into multi segments. To guarantee the calculation accuracy and improve the calculation efficiency, an adaptive refinement algorithm is suggested based on the field continues condition. The proposed method has been verified by the FEM calculation and experiment. The influence of circuit and plate parameters to the performance of the actuator is also investigated, from which a reasonable set of parameters can be found.
This paper deals with the development of variable-node element and its application to the adaptive h-version mesh refinement-recovery for the incompressible viscous flow analysis. The element which has variable mid-side nodes can be used in generating the transition zone between the refined and unrefined element and efficiently used for the construction of a refined mesh without generating distorted elements. A modified Guassian quadrature is needed to evaluate the element matrices due to the discontinuity of derivatives of the shape functions used for the element. The penalty function method which can reduce the number of the independent variables is adopted for the purpose of computational efficiency and the selective reduced integration is carried out for the convection and pressure terms to preserve the stability of solution. For the economical analysis of transient problems in which the locations to be refined are changed in accordance with the dynamic distribution of velocity gradient, not only the mesh refinement but also the mesh recovery is needed. The numerical examples show that the optimal mesh for the finite element analysis of a wind around the structures can be obtained automatically by the proposed scheme.

The Radial Point Interpolation Method (RPIM) has been proposed to overcome the difficulties associated with the use of the Radial Basis Functions (RBFs). The RPIM has the following properties: Simple implementation in terms of boundary conditions as in the Finite Element Method (FEM). A less expensive CPU time compared to other collocation meshless methods such as the Moving Least Square (MLS) collocation method. In this work, we propose an adaptive high-order numerical algorithm based on RPIM to simulate the thermoviscoplastic behavior of a material mixing observed in the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process. The proposed adaptive meshfree RPIM algorithm adapts well to the geometric and physical data by choosing a good shape parameter with a good precision. Our numerical approach combines the RPIM and the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM). A numerical procedure is also proposed in this work to automatically determine an improved shape parameter for the RBFs. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is analyzed in comparison with an iterative algorithm.

The optimal mesh refinement has a meaning that error of the every element is within an allowable level and in uniformly distributed. The adaptive mesh generation may be required to achieve the optimal mesh generation. For the purpose of optimal mesh generation, an error estimation and an adaptive mesh refinement are required. Using the adaptive mesh generation the second finite element analysis is performed with the result of the first analysis. In the process the error estimation is required. In this study the adaptive mesh generation program for triangular element is developed, and for a posteriori error estimation the stress projection approach is considered. It has been found the multigrid technique, where the error estimation and the mesh generation are combined in multi-step of analysis, may be used efficiently in the finite element analysis.

In recent years the interest in online monitoring of lightweight structures with ultrasonic guided waves is steadily growing. Especially the aircraft industry is a driving force in the development of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. In order to optimally design SHM systems powerful and efficient numerical simulation tools to predict the behaviour of ultrasonic elastic waves in thin-walled structures are required. It has been shown that in real industrial applications, such as airplane wings or fuselages, conventional linear and quadratic pure displacement finite elements commonly used to model ultrasonic elastic waves quickly reach their limits. The required mesh density, to obtain good quality solutions, results in enormous computational costs when solving the wave propagation problem in the time domain. To resolve this problem different possibilities are available. Analytical methods and higher order finite element method approaches (HO-FEM), like p-FEM, spectral elements, spectral analysis and isogeometric analysis, are among them. Although analytical approaches offer fast and accurate results, they are limited to rather simple geometries. On the other hand, the application of higher order finite element schemes is a computationally demanding task. The drawbacks of both methods can be circumvented if regions of complex geometry are modelled using a HO-FEM approach while the response of the remaining structure is computed utilizing an analytical approach. The objective of the paper is to present an efficient method to couple different HO-FEM schemes with an analytical description of an undisturbed region. Using this hybrid formulation the numerical effort can be drastically reduced. The functionality of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by studying the propagation of ultrasonic guided waves in plates, excited by a piezoelectric patch actuator. The actuator is modelled utilizing higher order coupled field finite elements, whereas the homogenous, isotropic plate is described analytically. The results of this "semi-analytical" approach highlight the opportunities to reduce the numerical effort if closed-form solutions are partially available.

Reliable dynamic analysis is essential in order to properly maintain structures so that structural hazards may be minimized. The finite element method (FEM) is proven to be an affective approximate method of structural analysis if proper element types and meshes are chosen. When the method is applied to dynamics analyzed in time domain, the meshes may need to be modified at each time step. As many meshes need to be generated, adaptive mesh generation schemes have become an important part in complex time domain dynamic finite element analyses of structures. In this paper, an adaptive mesh generation scheme for dynamic finite element analyses of structures is described. The concept of representative strain value is used for error estimates and the refinements of meshes use combinations of the h-method (node movement) and the r-method (element division). The validity of the scheme is shown through a cantilever beam example under a concentrated load with varying values. The example shows reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Furthermore, the study shows the potential for the scheme's effective use in complex structural dynamic problems such as those under seismic or erratic wind loads.

This paper carried out numerical calculation about the directivity synthesis problem in two dimension of adaptive ultrasonic transducers. Adaptive system for directivity synthesis is constructed by multi-electrode array on the surface of only one piezoelectric ceramic plate combined with optimal algorithm. In order to realize the desired directivity that is established arbitrarily, the optimal vibrational displacement is calculated by optimal algorithm (DFP method). Secondly, the optimal voltage of electrodes which is correspond to the calculated vibrational displacement is calculated used by finite element method and DFP method. And, the vibration analysis in two dimension of piezoelectric transducer carried out by means of finite element method.
